EXCLUSIVE: We Own The Night writer/director James Gray is fast mobilizing his next film. It’s called Low Life, and it will star Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix, with Jeremy Renner in discussions to play the third lead. The project is being packaged by CAA. Several financiers are in the mix, but I hear that Wild Bunch will likely get it. Discussions are also taking place with domestic distributors, and deal is expected to be sealed shortly. The Hurt Locker‘s Greg Shapiro is producing.

I’m told that Cotillard will play a woman attempting to immigrate from Poland. Her American dream turns into a nightmare. While sailing to Ellis Island and a new start, her sister grows deathly ill and she is forced to trade sexual favors for medicine and food to keep her sister alive. Once they land, she is warned to keep quiet about what happened. Though she does, she walks away with immigration papers that deem her a woman with bad morals. With no place to go, she falls prey to a charming sleazebag (Phoenix), who persuades her to turn tricks in New York. Renner is close to signing on to play the sleazebag’s cousin, a magician who sweeps the young woman off her feet and is her best chance to escape the nightmarish life she has fallen into. This will be Gray’s fourth film with Phoenix, who previously starred in The Yards, We Own The Night and most recently Two Lovers.
Shooting is to begin next year. All of the actors are busy. Cotillard is starring in The Dark Knight Rises, Renner will star in the Tony Gilroy-directed The Bourne Legacy, and Phoenix has returned to work starring in Paul Thomas Anderson’s untitled drama.

Interesting. I thought Gray said he wouldn’t work with Phoenix anymore, after the failure of Two Lovers (which he partially blamed on Phoenix going insane while “promoting” the film).
Gray was in on the ruse.
I love a movie that is about sleazebags and whores. Hopefully this will come out just in time for Christmas 2012, what timing?
Marion Cotillard has to exchange sexual favors. Okay, I’m in…
Nice to see Gray doing something a little different. Can’t say I’m overly excited about the premise though.
I just saw Two Lovers — that film deserved much better than it got. Wonderful performances and direction.
Actually, Gray said they’d gotten more publicity for the film because of Phoenix than they otherwise would have. He did, however, talk about how Phoenix had acted bizarre and was legitimately out-of-his-mind. Which suggests that either a) Gray knew what was going on from the beginning and was just playing along to help his friend, or b) realized after the fact that it was an act and had fewer qualms about working with him again as a result.
“Next year” is a long time away.
I love Jeremy Renner, so him playing a handsome magician sounds like something I’d watch. Yet, I’m getting concerned with Marion Cotillard’s movie choices. She keeps playing “the woman in trouble” or “the neglected female lover.” (See, INCEPTION, NINE, PUBLIC ENEMIES, etc.) I hope its not because she’s not offered enough good roles.
that not what her papers is all about….. you tried to explain her complex roles in just one line thats impossible.
I like Gray’s work, and We Own the Night deserved better than the rating it drew on RT, 56%, when you compare it with other movies that get that score. Certainly, the reviews of Two Lovers were good.
But when people complain about the indie market being on life support, this and so many other projects that go forward is either evidence that it’s just fine, or evidence that it’s project-dependent. There is nothing about this description that is “happy,” or something audiences would go see in theaters in droves. And so many other indies, they don’t even the appeal of a great cast, like this one.
Indies aren’t dead, they just need to be made cheaper. And no, I’m not saying that 12 million dollar picture needs to be budgeted at 6, I’m saying it needs to be budgeted at three, or else, don’t make it.
Certain projects have a 100% chance of being successful, certain projects have a 0% chance. A lot of the stuff that sells at Sundance, you can tell right away that it doesn’t deserve the money it gets. Be smarter about which projects to buy. Castable movies that can be made cheaply.
not many films made for 3M get bums on seats in theaters. sure, there are a few but they are the exceptions not the rule.
Phoenix is amazing and in a great place. I met him and was so impressed with him. It is ridiculous how much talent he has. He is capable of so much.
You had me at Marion Cotillard.
Nothing says money like sleazebags, prostitution, and an Ellis island immigration fail. Look out, Hangover 2.
I can’t wait to see Gray’s next 2 star film
It’s funny ’cause it’s true.
I agree that Two Lovers was a good film. Can’t get enough of Joaquin crazy or not.
I love Jeremy Renner and Marion Cotillard is great so I’ll end up watching this, but the movie premise troubles me in that I’m pretty sure that if Cotillard’s character were a brown woman coming from Ecuador no major HW players would want to touch it.
but can we really buy joaquin phoenix as a charming sleazebag?
Sounds very interesting! Plus the three leads are all great especially Cotillard and Renner.
Who in the hell is going to want to see this movie, no matter who is in the cast? Surely there are other worthy projects that aren’t so skeevy in source material.
I can’t believe there are still people who think James Gray thought Joaquin acted “bizarre,” etc. James knew about the mockumentary and played along. He and Joaquin are very close.
What a lovely female role! It’s so exciting to know that we can keep ignoring fascinating, important things that women — even unknown, unnamed women — did throughout history, and keep making movies in which they are whores waiting for salvation from the leading male of the day!
Were I Cotillard I’d be so thrilled.
Don’t get too hot and bothered… I’m sure all sex will be off screen and tawdry, even painful. That’s the Hollywood MO. Use the hookers for your personal fun, but show what a horrible life it really is.
Something so cute and appealing about Marion. She’d get more leading roles if she could nail the American or Latin accent.
This is a period film, right? Sailing to Ellis Island and walking away “with immigration papers that deem her a woman with bad morals.” Did I miss that detail in the description? Immigrants stopped coming to Ellis Island in the 50′s.
Yes- you missed the point, HUH. The article fails to mention that this script is a period piece– it takes place in 1915 NYC.
James Gray is a great filmmaker. I’ve been a huge fan ever since The Yards. His work is gritty, real and he always gets wonderful performances. He’s kind of a throwback to 1970′s filmmaking — he makes these amazing, small, absorbing dramas. In my opinion, there aren’t enough of those around these days. Look at the actors he gets. It’s because he writes great characters. And because he’s obviously a sensitive director who knows what he’s doing.
Yeah, his films probably don’t make anyone rich, but that doesn’t mean there’s not a place for them.
