EXCLUSIVE: Joel Edgerton has been set by director Baz Luhrmann to play Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby. He will join Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, Isla Fisher as Myrtle (Tom’s mistress), and Australian newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker. Edgerton, the Australian actor who was on the short list to star in The Bourne Legacy spinoff at Universal and other plum roles, takes a part that was going to Ben Affleck until his schedule didn’t work when he committed to direct and star in Argo for Warner Bros. Luhrmann’s update of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic will be made for Warner Bros, which will release it in 3D. Edgerton next stars with Tom Hardy in Warrior, the Gavin O’Connor-directed drama about brothers who square off in the mixed martial arts arena. Edgerton has an imposing physicality that makes him an intriguing choice for the role of Tom, played by Bruce Dern in the 1974 film.
Luhrmann, who took the above photo of Edgerton as Buchanan, confirmed he’d found his man: “In casting Tom one had to find an actor who could credibly be (as Fitzgerald describes him) ‘one of the most powerful ends that ever played football at New Haven,’ had five-star acting chops and in the big dramatic showdown scenes between Gatsby and Tom, hold the screen against Leonardo DiCaprio, in the appropriate age group. Any wonder, it has been a long and thorough journey. The simple truth is that Joel came into our rehearsal space in New York and fulfilled all of the above criteria, and then some.”

No offense to the British and Aussie actors that have been cast, but this is THE great american novel. What’s with Baz casting non-Americans?
Because he’s Aussie?
perhaps. perhaps he was a bad choice to direct it to begin with, i mean the man is making it in 3D for crying out loud.
I’m just completely guessing, but I wonder if there is something attached to the film tax breaks by Australia that say a certain number of Australians have to be involved to qualify for the money help. I could have sworn I read something about that a few years ago, but can’t say for certain. Maybe someone more qualified knows? (and nothing against Edgerton–I don’t know enough about him to give this casting a pass or fail).
I have been following the casting of ‘The Great Gatsby’ on my ‘Baz the Great’ fansite and a few days ago I posted:
“Edgerton is an Australian and this is noteworthy because on 19 April 2011, when Deadline reported that Ben Affleck had pulled out of the project, they further stated: “Word is [Luhrmann]‘s trying to get Australian actors for some of the roles because it helps the film’s financial situation.” Could this give Edgerton an advantage over Evans?”
It seems the answer is yes!
However, besides from that, I do believe Edgerton is a great actor and he will be fantastic in the role of Tom Buchanan.
Because he has to in order to receive government tax breaks. The film is being made in Australia and must qualify as an Australian film in order to receive certain tax offsets.
Great choice. Saw Edgerton in a screening of WARRIOR. Guy’s gonna be a huge star.
Felt the same way about him in Animal Kingdom.
I have to agree. “Warrior” is going to make Edgerton a star. It’s a breakout role for him.
Yes–why all non-American actors and why do we have to see them in 3D? Next it’s going to be a musical…
Ha ha! Americans finally getting their just desserts for so many U.S actors playing roles they shouldn’t of.
Shouldn’t have, not shouldn’t of. Does “shouldn’t of” make sense in any context? No.
i think you and I are the only people on the internet that care about that. But it DOES drive me batty! it’s the result of a non-reading generation….
Joel Edgerton is awful. Why do people keep casting him in things?
I couldn’t agree more. So dull.
Did you even see Animal Kingdom, he stole every scene he was in.
Certainly crushes little Toto Maguire, pound for pound. And, eh hem, I don’t think Affleck is exactly heavyweight material.
Nowhere to go but up.
I don’t believe Leo and Tobey are Australian….
This guy was great in Animal Kingdom and the trailer for the boxing flick looks hella good. I can’t see him as Tom Buchanan but I have a feeling he’ll pull it off. All the casting (with the exception of Leo and Tobey) on this show is kind of wacky but I’m ready for a good surprise.
For me the greatest hurdle will be Kerri Muligan, whom I love but her melancholic demeanor is like a second skin. Daisy is an effervescent cruel beauty. Kerri is anything but…. but again, she may surprise me.
what difference does it make if an actor is american portraying a character in, what you call, ‘the great american novel’? wouldn’t you rather a director find people, no matter what their background, who fulfill the part best? im not a huge baz luhrman fan, loved romeo + juliet, austrailia was awful, but im willing to trust him. he is a visionary and i think that is a dying type of director. im even willing to drink the 3 kool aid. i think this might be a great way of showcasing what 3D has to offer beyond gimmicky tricks. give the guy a chance, this does smell like it could go either way, but im willing to allow the great cast the chance to make a great film
I think the bigger issue is that Tom Buchannan reads a very important book about how the only True Americans are of Nordic decent. So, having an Aussie actor play him is even more outrageous!!
Just kidding. (not about Tom’s reading interests, just the outrage.)
Go you aussie actors….show them what you can do! We have had american actors playing Brits and aussies for ever and ever!
Of the six main roles 3 are to be played by Australians, 2 of them unknowns?! And what’s with the emphasis on his physicality, he was a powerful football player- for Yale! And the director really said he has “five star acting chops?” This sounds awful!
I loved the “Great Gatsby”, saw it years ago when Robert Redford was in it. Have to wait and see how this movie takes of with Joel Edgerton playing the part. Lynne
Nice guy, met him in Sydney and D.C. after two “Streetcar” performances.
Nice looking girl. I smell a perennial cross dressing oscar nomination.
And “shouldn’t of?” Oh brother. I see America’s education system is not the only one that is in trouble.
good role choice he has taken
Americans moaning about the magic of Globalisation…
Irony anyone?
I sincerely can only think of a handful of young American actors who are worthy of such s project AND have the talent to deal with the material.
A-K87, I agree with you. I am American, I hate to say this, but most of the young U.S. actors don’t have the goods – most of them do not come from a theatre background ( limited acting skills ) , no screen presence, and the actors are boyish ( instead of being manly ) , and they have very little charisma. For example, the mighty Tom Hardy effortlessly blew Leo Di Caprio ( talented actor ) off the screen in ‘ Inception ‘. Currently , my most favorite young actors are non-Americans: Christian Bale, Andrew Garfield, Colin Farrell, Karl Urban, and Eric Bana. I expect to see more and more non-American thespians taking over Hollywood.
Interesting that Baz cast actors not well know for their singing abilities … but he did the same with “Moulin Rouge” so I’m not that worried. I hope he uses some Lady Gaga songs for the movie!
It’s funny that – although Tom seems like he ‘should’ be played by an American – there are a lot of Aussie actors who fit the bill for the arrogant, brutish and snobbish Tom. Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana (who essentially played the part in ‘Funny People’), Chris Hemsworth and others seem to be able to pull off the mix between rugged masculinity and austere sophistication with a great ease. Edgerton’s roles on stage (including Stanley opposite Cate Blanchett’s Blanche in ‘Streetcar’) seems to suggest his casting more than his film performances, but he exuded star quality even in a supporting turn in ‘Animal Kingdom’ so all signs are he should do well in the role.
As proven many times before, anyone with a modicum of talent can hold the screen with Dicrapio.
Did I read this correctly? The Great Gatsby in 3D? WTF!!?? Enough of the damn 3D already and just try to get writers to write decents scripts. This is pathetic.
Ho-hum, now it sounds truly boring.
Good choice, even if it’s cast by type.
Tom B. is described by Fitzgerald as a football star. Tom would take Gatsby in a fistfight. I never got the character Tom deserved from Bruce Dern, although I’m a fan.
All of the casting (with possible the exception of Maguire, I don’t see him as WWI vet) seems very appropriate to the novel which suggests a very faithful adaptation.
This could be a big red flag for commercial success, but demonstrates respect for the source material.
Does anyone know if Casting for any of the extras for GGatsby i.e. the party scene…will be in Australia ONLY with only Aussie extras?
I imagine too expensive to send any from LA/NYC all the way there?
ANY IDEA?
Thanks!
