ABC Unveils 2011-12 Schedule: New Comedy Block On Tuesday With Tim Allen
When he took the stage for his first ABC upfront presentation, the network’s new president Paul Lee was quick to bring up the event’s main attraction. “When Anne Sweeney called me about this job, I asked myself, ‘Do I really want to be humiliated by Jimmy Kimmel in front of hundreds of people?’ The answer was: ‘Absolutely’ ”
Right away, Lee, who was visibly nervous, branded the network’s new lineup “pure entertainment,” so he began presenting ABC’s fall schedule with Thursday night, showcasing new 8 PM anchor Charlie’s Angels. “I’ve wanted to remake Charlie’s Angels since I was 14,” Lee said. He explained the decision to schedule the remake Thursdays at 8 PM with the fact that it will be the only scripted drama in the slot (besides CW).
Tim Allen was on hand to promote his new ABC comedy Last Man Standing. “It’s about a man in a women’s world. Its original name was The Paul Lee Story.” That was not the only jab at his new boss. “You can dump the accent, you got the job,” he told British-born Lee.
After the clip for ABC’s new cross-dressing comedy Work It, Lee justified his decision to pick up the show with, “So sue me, I’m a Brit,” segueing to “Talking about cross-dressing, here’s Jimmy Kimmel.”
Kimmel was his usual irreverent self. Here are some of his top barbs:
On Lee: “Speaking of gay, let’s talk about the new head of ABC, Paul Lee. Oh, wait? He’s not gay, he’s British? Who better to lead the American Broadcasting Company than an English guy with a Korean last name.”
On Fox’s The X Factor: “I think this is the best idea of 2002. It’s like American Idol meets a mirror.”
On ABC’s reality series Shark Tank, in which wanna-be inventors compete for a cash prize: “You know what someone should invent on Shark Tank? A replacement for Shark Tank.”
On older-skewing CBS: “CBS is the No. 1 network mainly because their viewers can’t remember where they put the remote. … More people die watching CBS than any other network.”
On Ashton Kutcher replacing Charlie Sheen on CBS’ Two and a Half Men: “They said that they will retool the show, and sure enough they found a new tool, Ashton Kutcher.” Why is he a great choice? “He did a good job replacing Bruce Willis.”
On NBC’s upfront presentation: “Bob Greenblatt thanked God for The Voice… God stopped watching NBC after Friends.”
On ABC executives and talent: “All of us at ABC, from the top down, are committed to one thing: Keeping our jobs.”

All of the new sitcoms on ABC (save maybe the Tim Allen one) look absolutely dreadful. The dramas don’t look much better. ABC takes the prize for worst development season by a long shot. CBS would have to completely S*#% the bed to do worse.
It’s interesting that people still make “CBS is old” jokes since it’s #2 in the so-called young demo of A1849 — behind FOX and AHEAD of ABC.
ABC is 2nd in 18-49 during this sweeps month.
@Tom — but for the season, CBS is at a 2.9 while ABC is at a 2.5
Yes, CBS started strong and ended weak, while ABC is trending upward.
If the NFL lockout end soon, ABC better watch there back because NBC has the Super Bowl this year! It has a good change to overtake ABC for at least 3rd Place in the demo, who’s laughing now?!
Pan Am looks pretty good as does Revenge. Once Upon a Time doesn’t look good though.
For Charlie’s Angels, that’s one and done but it gives Sony the chance to release S5 of the original show on DVD as a tie-in to the new show. Other than the Tim Allen comedy, not too much to look forward to except maybe Pan Am.
Apartment 23 actually looks really good, imo. And Suburgatory has a good chance of being fun. The others (except maybe the Tim Allen one) do look dreadful though.
Sounds like Tostones Fix is bitter b/c his/her pilot didn’t get picked up at ABC. And I’ve seen all of the ABC pilots. This is the best development season ABC has had in a few years by far. Once Upon A Time is amazing. Pan Am, Apt 23, Suburgatory and Good Christian Belles are all great too.
I just call them as I see them.
And who thought Pan Am was a good idea? TV Executives longing for the days of luxury travel? It’s Mad Men but…get this…on a plane! You know those wings they give to kids on the plane used to be REAL METAL!
I mean Playboy Club at least has an interesting setting…but Pan Am is set in the exciting world of…..Flight Attendants? What’s next, “Hart Shaffner Marks”? Sexual mores challenged daily by America’s tailors. Back in the day, Haberdashery MEANT something.
Some people say the same thing about Mad Men. Mad Men takes place in the not exciting world of advetising. But, the writers got around that by focusing in on their personal lives.
ABC has the only new shows I’m even remotely interested in watching (including Pan Am – looking forward to seeing Christina Ricci every week).
The new slates by the other networks look abysmal.
People continue to make jokes because its been that way for a long time. Even married with children made fun of CBS and that was in the 80s.
They are #2 in 18-49, but 18-34 makes you more money $. And its all about what people will pay for your shows and CBS doesnt make as much as FOX, i believe CBS & ABC are about the same in revenue.
CBS is KING
well Paul Lee probably did the best he could in such a short time in the job? PanAm looks great but hell its almost no fair to all the others its a Sid Ganis production. Apt 23 & Suburgatory look cute but like ABC Family shows. Charlies Angels will bomb. Scandal & Revenge (a USA Network rip off of Royal Pains???)look good, have potential. Once Upon a Time wont last, feels too Witches of Eastwick? The River feels too complicated. & Work It – isnt that exactly like some ancient TV show that Tom Hanks started his career in called Bossom Buddies??? Too bad Paul Lee exuded no passion for any of the ABC line up. he read the teleprompter word for word. he needs a style/presentation coach. Anne Sweeney was her usual bland Political Disney self: says nothing, means nothing, stands for nothing – why do we have to hear her every year say the same BS? Paul’s an OK guy but appears out of his league? Mark Pedowitz would have been a better person for the top job at ABC to replace Steve M. but maybe Mark’s The CW Upfronts on Friday will be more exciting.
The Revenge is actually very good according to people who’ve read the script. It’s a murder mystery. It’s nothing like Royal Pains.
Totally agree about the lack of passion or charisma from Paul & Anne. They were both robotic.
You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.
Though V’s cancellation wasn’t unexpected, I’m annoyed that they won’t do a wrap up episode or tv movie. Or have allowed thm to film the 13 eps they first commissioned for season 2 before bumping it to ten. It was a show that had finally hit it’s stride and did ok ratings in comparison to other shows that had been picked up.
V committed suicide in the last episode.
