EXCLUSIVE: Celine Rattray is leaving her post as president of Mandalay Vision to partner with Trudie Styler in the launch of Maven Pictures, a Gotham-based film development, production and financing company. The Maven partners hope to produce three to five films per year and fund development and provide equity for films. Mandalay Vision was formed in 2010 and came out of the gate with the Oscar-nominated The Kids Are All Right. Rattray was one of the producers.
Rattray is bringing over her production team from Mandalay Vision, formed to produce and finance prestige pictures. Exiting staffers are Hardy Justice, who’ll be senior VP of production/development, Jenny Halper, who’ll be development executiv,e and Nic Marshall, who’ll be director of operations. Aside from The Kids Are All Right, Rattray and Mandalay Vision produced the Rachel Weisz-starrer The Whistleblower. Styler’s credits include the Guy Ritchie-directed Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Styler, the wife of musician Sting, also has her UK-based Xingu Films label, which is working on projects that include a Steve Zaillian-scripted adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns. She was BAFTA-nominated for the Duncan Jones-directed Moon.
It wasn’t immediately clear what the next move is for Mandalay Vision or whether the company will remain in New York. I will update when I hear back from Mandalay chief Peter Guber.

What happened here? She made 1 movie that didn’t work next thing we know she is shoved out at Mandalay. Who has the real story here?
what is the one film that didn’t work?
Every single film. I can’t think of 1 film that Celine has actually made money on. She always defers her producer fees & gives away her back end in order to get the movies made because she is ALWAYS over budget! How do you win a Golden Globe & not make a nickel personally?!?! She needs 30+ investors/project & gives away credits like they are candy. Good luck Trudie. It’s a good thing you have deep pockets, you’ll need them!
For the past few years the indie world has imploded and yet Celine continued to make movies. I made a movie with her. And yeah in the past she has handed out credits and used many different investors but unlike almost every other producer in town she actually got and gets it done. She’s the hardest working producer I’ve worked with. She just sold another one at Cannes. She’s still in her thirties. Deep pockets? Celine up until now has made films on a shoestring and no not all of them make money but her track record of success far outweighs the myriad indie producers who make one or none a year and never see a dime or a distro deal at all. Her NY indie style is unpopular with a lot of agents and talent in town but the fact is these people would not have been able to make a film if Celine hadn’t pulled it together. Up until recently most agents couldn’t stomach the new world order that beat up their percentage and made them look like they couldn’t close a deal. It wasn’t even their fault, it was the way the world was and is changing. People including many producers are still kicking around in the old expectations and they will be out of the business soon enough. Kids would never have gone if Celine had not pulled it together at the eleventh and a half hour. That’s a fact. She made people a bunch of money on that film and worked her ass off because she believed in it even though she didn’t make a dime. How many producers in town would let the roll? Celine is the new world order so get used to it. She’s a woman so she’s up against it even tougher. Celine and Trudie together make very good sense. But she’s gonna run a studio one day, and deserves it, mark my words and keep talking.
Hardy Justice is cool, no clue what the real story is perhaps creative differences (like always)
Sure…nice guy but a soft exec. They work in their own world. But best of luck.
I think Trudie and Celine will be an amazing partnership and a force to be reckoned with in indie film.
Hell of a team; excellent work to follow, no doubt.
I think this will be great for Trudie. She needs a hollywood eye and a modern writer. Of course when you have your own money I guess you can make as many personal indulgences as you like. The world won’t watch them with you though Trudie. I hope something awesome comes out of this. Like the man on man kiss in “Poets”, I don’t care if you’re the pope that’s still a hot scene!
you mean once peter guber hits you with a ton of hot air and 80s movie trivia?
got to hand it to celine rattray. i still don’t know how she managed to finance all those plum pictures that no-one ever saw but you have to give credit that she kept doing it.
Celine Rattray is a maverick in the best sense. I admire her and not just for her Golden Globe win or Oscar nom for “The Kids Are Alright.” She knows how to make movies and she knows how to get creative. She also has a gifted eye for material. She and Trudie will undoubtedly have a slate worth watching for!
Cool! Rock and roll! I cannot WAIT to see what they put out! Always interested in movies made in creative ways, not just relying on the predictable studio system. Re the 1st comment- huh? Look up her IMDB dude. Chick has made a bunch of films in just a few years. She is going to be a powerhouse.
Celine Rattray is an incredibly hard-worker. She doesn’t talk about why something won’t work. She just somehow makes it work. I agree- future powerhouse, def one to watch.
Heard a couple of weeks back that Mandalay were looking to kick her out for a while. No surprise. She’s a joke within the industry. Creative? Don’t make me laugh. And none of her films ever made a nickel. The only talent she has is to get producer credit on films that are not her own (it was shameless the way she muscled in on the Kids Are All Right nom).
she knows how to raise money (rich friends?) but she does not have good taste. most of the movies she got financed lost money – deservedly so
Whose getting her job at Mandalay vision. They need a maverick someone who see’s past all the agent b.s.. Seemed like the perfect job for Celine.
