MONDAY: She was sought after for both the U.K. and the U.S. versions of X Factor. Now Cheryl Cole won’t be a part of either of them. After getting axed from the upcoming Fox edition of the singing competition, there was speculation that Cole would return to the British version of the show. But no deal was reached, and the X Factor network ITV announced earlier today that the judges for the upcoming season of the show will be Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos, Kelly Rowland and the only returning member of the panel, Louis Walsh. “These four are totally up for it, each of them bring a different attitude,” X Factor chief Simon Cowell said in a statement. “They have had a ton of hits between them and they are all committed to finding a star.” Cowell, who made an appearance as a judge on his other U.K. talent competition series, Britain’s Got Talent, over the weekend, got ribbed by co-host Dec over Cole’s dismissal. “Can you understand my accent Simon,” asked Dec, who shares the same Geordie roots as Cole.
SATURDAY: So Sam Rubin from KTLA Channel 5 in Los Angeles went on air with this report about the Fox X Factor fuck-up. It’s pretty funny:
FRIDAY: Here’s why there’s still no announcement about Fox’s decision to replace UK pop singer Cheryl Cole as a judge on the American version of The X Factor after they saw her Los Angeles auditions: it’s not done yet. To avoid looking like he beat up Britain’s sweetheart, executive producer Simon Cowell is trying to make sure that Cole can go back to being a judge on the UK version of his show which starts filming next Wednesday. But those judges are already set and that talent competition has been thrown into chaos as well. Now the lawyers are trying to look for loopholes so Cole can save face. She’s already returned to Britain along with Cowell. If they can’t, then there’s still the very slim possibility that she could stay on board the U.S. series while waiting-in-the-wings replacement Nicole Schezinger will stay as co-host. C’mon, do any of us even care? Except for the fact that this is really starting to look like a big fat Simon screw-up before his show even gets on the air.
WEDNESDAY UPDATE 6 PM: “Nothing is definite now. But they do know it’s not working, and they’re trying to figure it out.” That’s what a source tells us about how Fox and The X Factor and Simon Cowell are mulling the replacement of UK pop singer Cheryl Cole as a judge on the show. We’ve learned that Fox ”isn’t thrilled with the chemistry” when they saw all four judges interact together for the first time at the Los Angeles auditions and felt the weak link was Cole. “She may be Britain’s sweetheart but nobody knows her here,” the source says. (Toldja!) Now what to do about her contract? Some people are trying out the lame spin on us that “Cheryl is very close to her family and homesick for Britain.” Yeah, sure.
WEDNESDAY 4PM: Maybe it was that strong Newcastle accent that hurt her. Or else the chemistry might have been wrong. But TMZ is reporting right now that former Pussycot Doll lead singer Nicole Scherzinger will replace UK pop singer Cheryl Cole as a judge on The X Factor. Scherzinger had already been selected as the show’s host while Cole had been hand-picked by executive producer Simon Cowell as a judge first for the British version of the show and then recently for the U.S. version. The problem about this switcheroo, if true, is that Cole already taped the Los Angeles auditions and an insider tells Deadline that there is “no way to do away with that footage. A lot of talented people have auditioned there. It will have to be carefully edited with cutaways.” Presently there is no official confirmation or denial of Cole’s removal. Scherzinger — who is a singer, songwriter, and dancer – recently served as a guest judge on the UK version of The X Factor, but Cowell has said he always wanted her to host his Fox version.

Since TMZ is the source, I think Haley Reinhart will take her place.
I will be pretty mad if this is true. She moved here, and then they decide that she isn’t going to be a judge anymore? Any American that thinks her accent would be an issue needs to GET OVER IT. If you’ve listened to her speak, you can clearly understand her. If not, you’re simply deaf or a complete moron. Ridiculous.
There is some sentiment from African-Americans about CC and given her past rightly so.
Her accent is somewhat thick compared to Simon or someone like Sharon Osborne to deny that is like saying she is the best singer in the UK (CC is not).
Lastly, I see this story just a way to drum up pre-launch drama.
Steve Jones’s accent is even ticker than Cheryl’s accent so that’s BS. He is Welsh.
The accent problem is completely bullshit.
I don’t think that it’s completely (sic) bullshit. It’s more like somewhat bullshit. Her accent makes what she’s saying a little difficult to discern, but it’s not an insuromountable impediment. I think the bigger issue is this added to the lack of compatibility with the rest of the hosts.
Yeah, her past where she was unanimously found ‘not guilty’ of having made any kind of racist comment and where no eyewitnesses heard her say what the woman involved was accusing her of saying? Her past where she was married to a black man?
He accent is a non-issue and your analogy is just stupid.
JUST PUT CHERYL BACK ON! It’s that simple. The panel just needs to grow together. You can’t just have one audition round and expect everything to be “muy magical!” Give me a break.
As for her “Shady” past, it’s ridiculous. Either no one knows about her here, or they do. You can’t use both excuses and if you use the latter and expect people to be automatically unforgiving when they don’t even know what you’re talking about (or care for that matter, this is America)
I LOVE CHERYL’S ACCENT AND HER PERSONALITY. THOUGHT SHE WAS TERRIFIC ON X FACTOR UK. CAN’T BELIEVE THEY FIRED HER OVER HER ACCENT, SUE CHERYL, SUE!
Nice one Brett, couldn’t agree more.
A Newcastle accent isn’t nearly as incomprehensible as a Birmingham accent.
Three British accents on an american show with just two american judges is offputting for a network show. it’s not playing on BBC America. we know how well imports do on primetime. This would have mimicked one.
America’s Got Talent has Piers Morgan and Sharon Osbourne Both from the UK and that show is highly rated and they along with Howie Mandel and Nick Cannon have a fun show to watch. America is a country of immigrants with accents from all over the place. Our Ex Governor Arnold didn’t speak English too well and he was elected twice.
Excuse me.. do you actually live in the UK? Newcastle is further north then Birmingham, the Birmingham accent is clear. The Newcastle accent is very strong in comparison. Cheryl has a very strong awful Newcastle accent and speaks alot of slang, and street. As a UK citizen I hate the way she speaks, its not proper English, and she really should have listened and had elocution lessons. She’s been sacked because she didn’t have the whole package.. she wasn’t seen as successful or famous in the US..her style lost the plot..she was too stiff and staged.. if she’d have continued she would have dragged down the US version of the X factor..
You must be from Birmingham. You seem to have taken my comment a little too personally. No, I don’t not live in the UK but I have been to Birmingham and couldn’t understand a damn word. I used to date a woman from Newcastle and had no problem understanding her.
I hope this isn’t true.
I’m calling FAKE on this story. The whole business about her accent has always been just a rumor and Simon confirmed that FOX wanted Cheryl from the get to.
With a contract in place already I can’t see how after all of the experience these folks have with these types of shows AND that they already can watch/hear Cheryl judge from her years on the UK version how this would suddenly arise as an issue.
My guess is that…if anything…Sherzinge is sitting in for Cheryl who was over in Cannes recently and people have jumped to conclusions.
I am hoping, HOPING, that you are right.
Do you actually believe everything Cowell tells you and she was in Cannes for 2 days when there was NO auditions taking place.
Simon has history of dumping judges on his shows after a few episodes, Brien Freidman was sacked from The UK X factor just a few weeks after auditions began and Kelly Brook was dropped after a few days on Britain’s got talent!!!
maybe it is true maybe not, but cheryl cole did not have the credibility to be judge in the USA as she has never had any success there as an artist, cheryl is gorgeous and that gets you far in life but it looks like not as far as making it in america yet.
And Nicole has any credibility? She is a constant flop, what is she going to say to the contestants? “I’m a flop, not only here in the US but around the world, but I’m going to help you to be a star.” At least Cheryl Cole is successful in Europe, a lot more successful than Nicole could ever dream.
I don’t agree with either of your statements. I like both the judges and preferred both of them to Paula Abdul. I think Cheryl fills out the chemistry with Simon and Nichole fills out the panel as a whole. I think the both of you base your critiques (if you can call them that) on your dislike for either woman but in all actuality Cheryl has a presence in the States (whether you disagree or not, enough people know OF her and that’s enough of a stepping stone) while Nichole is successful as the frontwoman for PCD’s and is a successful solo artist in the United Kingdom. Both women have credibility.
They should have never put Paula on the panel with Cheryl and they should have never tried to replace Cheryl after they already gave her the job. End of story.
Nicole has been far more successful world wide then Cheryl has.
I hope it isn’t true because it’ll create sloppy editing. They had enough time to get things right and I also think Nicole and Paula look too similar next to each other. It would’ve been better to get a completely new female so it doesn’t mess up the editing in terms of Nicole being host for the first auditions.
And wasn’t Cheryl there for LA and Chicago? That’s four dates right there. That’s way too much to just ignore. Almost half the auditions.
Yes, Cheryl was here in Chicago. I was at the taping and thought she fit in well with the other judges. Also, she gave great feedback to the contestants. Oh, and too much is being made about her accent – it’s not that bad.
If Sing-Off will now air during the fall, and Nicole Sherzinger is either hosting or judging on X-Factor, who is taking Nicole’s place on Sing-Off?
It can’t be true. People loved her at the auditions, she got on well with Paula, what’s going on?
Frankly, I don’t care if Miss Piggy is judging along with Simon. After watching Country Music Television…errr…The Nashville Network,….err.. this season of American Idol, it will be a pleasure to have a judge who gives straight on crtiques back on television.
Hopefully it is just a rumor, it would be very unprofessional if after months of talks and negoations, a signed contract, already completed auditions and her relocation SPECIFICALLY because of this job, she would be suddenly “replaced”. After all this time, it can’t possibly be a surprise that she has a thick – although completely understandable – accent.
The only logical explanation is that Scherzinger did indeed sit in for her a couple of times, but just temporarily, and the audience members/contestants jumped to conclusions.
i have a feeling this has less to do with cheryl and more to do with nicole’s hosting skills… or likely lack thereof. as i was watching seacrest on the live idol finale last night, my VERY first thought was “how the hell is nicole gonna navigate hosting a live show?” whether you like him or not, seacrest is VERY good at what he does in terms of juggling a bunch of moving parts and keeping the show moving (yes, a lot of that lies in producers’ hands, but all their work would be for nothing if left in the hands of a host that can’t handle it)
this isn’t to say, by the way, that nicole wouldn’t eventually be up to the task… it’s just to say that putting a non-host into such a high-profile hosting role is ASKING for scrutiny out of the gate, and perhaps they realized that. keeping her on the show over Cheryl, though, would make since since US audiences know her already and have no idea who cheryl is or why they should trust her opinion… not to mention the fact that having both Simon and Cheryl leave the UK X-Factor at the same time could have been a fatal blow to that version of the show, so perhaps that was a motivation as well.
I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case. Nicole has NO chemistry with Steve Jones or Corbin.
Oh, and after this there is now way Cheryl is going to accept being part of any show related to Cowell
I think it’s a classic publicity stunt Cowell-style…
this 100%
I call bs on this tbh. This smacks of a publicity move with Idol’s finale airing tonight. It’s pathetic, but I think it’s just a cheap publicity stunt and will be shocked if this turns out to be true.
BS.
Cowell is making the casting calls.
Cole is his girl.
Oh man. I can’t stop laughing at this. I mean, it was so obvious that accent of hers was going to derail any hopes she had here. How could the rest of you supporting Cheryl not see that?
You people are probably the only ones on the planet that give a rats ass about this show. Honestly,
so much has been written about it I feel I’ve seen it already.
WHO IS SHE? what has she done? why do i care about some random hot chick’s opinion???
It’s called google. Use it.
Please, please tell me this isn’t true? I was beyond excited to get to know one of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen. I have heard her talk and there is no issue there. Every one I know couldn’t wait to get to know her. This will be a good reason for me to not watch it now. The only excuse would be if she got ill or a drug problem, but I doubt that happened. Do the right thing, bring her back, I’m from nj and would rather see hot talented cheryl cole over nicole s.
I hope they don’t replace Cheryl with that gross looking Scherzinger chick…
This has EVERYTHING to do with the sinking ship that is U.K X Factor & nothing to do with Paula or accents.
UK X factor a sinking ship??? where the hell did you get that crap from??? it had the highest viewing figures on tv last year.. nothing else has ever come close to the viewing figures.. almost a third of all britains watch it..
once x factor starts the whole country is talking about it on facebook, twitter, radio, chat shows… to say its a flop is someone who is totally clueless.. its probably the most successful tv programme in the UK right now.. at least research your facts.. UK X Factor a sinking ship.. what a joke.. it looks like the US version is set to crash and burn..
it will be, after its two biggers stars leave the show.. bring this discussion up next year
I can understand her perfectly. We here in the States are use to accents. Cajun, Brooklyn, Texas draw… come on. She is wonderful. How stupid is this?
Most of us might be used to it. However, many of us prefer to hear somewhat talk that doesn’t have an accent.
Chemistry is another spin they are trying out, isn’t it? Nicole get along better with Paula and LA Reid compared to Cheryl?? When pigs fly. Better yet, let’s take a poll among the former Pussycat Dolls.
They are going to have to come up with a better response than that.
Absolutely, Paula like Cheryl, Cheryl liked Paula. I can’t see Paula having a good relationship with Nicole. Maybe that’s what Cowell wants, DRAMA.
Fox made the right decision. Cole will do well back at her local TV station in the UK.
Could it be that the story is wrong it’s Nicole Scherzinger and having 2 hosts that isn’t working? It seems unlikely that an established part of The X-Factor like Cheryl would have problems. She’s already worked well with Simon, Sharon Osborne, Danni Minogue and Louis Walsh so how could she be the problem? This story just doesn’t make sense.
Completely agree. The UK show is doomed with the 3biggest favs gone. This is Simon sending Cole back to UK but the British press will kill Cherly for this.
