EXCLUSIVE: From the network that made international stars out of Snookie and The Situation comes a comedy about young people’s obsession with celebrity and with reality TV as a way to become famous. MTV has given the green light to single-camera comedy pilot Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous, co-created by hot 20-year-old comedian Bo Burnham and writer Dan Lagana and starring Burnham. It is a mocumentary, which centers on Zach (Burnham), a kid fresh out of high school who hires a camera crew to film him because he wants to be famous. “It’s that idea that your life is not worth anything if you’re not watched,” Burnham said.
Burnham said he’s always been a fan of mocumentaries, but while they mostly are about subjects being caught in the act and often embarrassed, he decided to put a spin on the genre by giving the person who is being watched control. “The idea is of a kid who is filming his own life, and since he has control, we can see multiple takes as he is trying to make himself more appealing by thinking that you have to act like you are famous in order to be famous,” Burnham said. “He is the director and the star of a reality show.” Burnham cites a survey of 18- to 25-year-olds asked what they want to be in life. The winning “profession” by a wide margin — being famous. “People aspire to fame as if it’s a career,” Lagana said.
Burnham had been attached to Lagana’s feature script Unique Visitor, so he called him up and the two developed the idea and wrote the script with Luke Liacos. The three are executive producing with Burnham’s manager, Dave Becky of 3 Arts. Lagana, repped by CAA and the Gotham Group, has an existing relationship with MTV as he just worked on the cable network’s animated comedy Good Vibes. On the feature side, he wrote Spanking Shakespeare at Paramount, which John Stalberg is on board to direct, and just sold his feature pitch The Pool to Fox with Will Speck & Josh Gordon attached to direct. Gersh-repped Burnham, who is also a musician, describes his act as a one-man show that blends songs and stand-up. He found fame while in high school as comedy videos he started posting at 16 quickly took off and have garnered more than 70 million views to date. He was about to start college when he pulled out and has been touring successfully in the U.S. and internationally for the past three years. He has done a Comedy Central special and recently won the network’s 2011 Stand-Up Showdown, he has sold 200,000 comedy CDs and won a prize at last year’s Edinburgh comedy festival. On the feature side, he is a attached to a musical project from Judd Apatow.

Meta is the new irony indeed.
Oh Bo, play that oboe.
this is the kinda s#$t they are greenlighting now? you mean to tell me there aren’t any shows or concepts with potential that involve a diverse cast? these companies deserve to FAIL cause their ignorance is killing me!
You’re really stupid if you think this isnt brilliant. Bo burnham is lightyears ahead of you intelectually and there is no doubt he is helping to make a great show
i think you should check out the density and intellecual strenght of bo’s work before you go boo-hooing it.
Is MTV going to renew Skins? It’s taking a while.
I thought they already had a show like that called “World of Jenks”
@soundsgoodbut World of Jenks is a not anything like Bo Burnham’s project. World of Jenks is in documentary format not mockumentary.
Brilliant idea. Why didn’t Janollari develop ideas like this when he was running The WB (into oblivion)? This is exactly the kind of show CW target viewers would get into, instead of the wretched pilots we’ve read about.
It goes back to the insane decision to not greenlight “Nobody’s Watching,” a great show-within-a-reality-show concept that was fresh and funny. CW has to take some chances, or there’s no payoff.
Remember when American Idol was offered around to all the networks, including The WB, and only FOX took a chance? Now it’s a multi-billion-dollar franchise. If you want to break thru and score big, it takes doing something “different” than the norm. Kudos to MTV, although I won’t pay for cable TV…so it’s a show I’ll never see.
While this may not seem like the most amazing idea for a show, isn’t anything better than Jersey Shore and Teen Mom? People were so negative about all the reality shows on MTV, and now they’re doing the same with the scripted shows. I don’t get why people are so negative to MTV for at least trying to bring scripted shows back to their network. I know, I know, we want great shows with amazing casts and writing. But you can’t expect the network that employs people like Snooki and pregnant white-trash teens to do great things with scripted TV. At least not right away anyways. So give their shows a chance, watch them and then criticize them, because I know they green lit about 5 shows. Or don’t watch you don’t have to.
@Jason: You can watch MTV’s shows on their site for free, they usually have them listed for a long time.
Good point RecceR.
Woooooooooooooo! It’s finally happening! Oh man. MTV? Art really is dead. Fuckyeah.
bo i love you and hope you do well!
So is bo burnham can get green lighted for a mocumentary but I still cant.Bo is da bomb diggity!
I think Burnham is telling his story. He’s finally saying what all of us are thinking (or should be). I hope it works out for him.
It’s Bo. He wouldn’t be involved in something disgustingly ridiculous. Give it a chance. Bo is wonderful.
Looking at all of his previous work, I don’t expect this to be anything less than genius. The intellectual density of his comedy is absolutely brilliant. Truly one of the most talented performers and lyricists I’ve ever seen. I’m especially looking forward to his new rap album still in progress. His ability to rap, satire, and write music makes the mainstream artists look like jokes. Never underestimate Bo Burnham. Take any concept you might think is stupid and if Bo’s working with it, he’s going to find some way to make it incredibly in-depth and clever.
Shut the fuck up. Bo Burnham is legit funny who deserves a show. It’ll probably be better than other bullshit in t.v.
Brilliant! When does this air?
Third episode aired last night. It really is an amazing show. Extremely well-made, hilarious, and features strong characters. Even better, it has a clear message about the delusion of fame-seeking that Burnham delivers so likably that it will definitely not alienate its audience.
Bravo to the MTV execs who greenlit this, bravo to Dave Becky, and an extra large bravo to Burnham, who is quickly following through on the potential he’s shown in his performing. How’s this for irony? If you’re looking for the smartest voice of our generation, it’s on MTV.
