EXCLUSIVE… UPDATE WITH MORE DETAILS, 3:45 PM: We hear that the idea of Hugh
Grant as a replacement for Charlie Sheen in Two And A Half Men was first pitched to CBS boss Les Moonves and CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler about a month ago. After a couple of weeks sorting out the Sheen lawsuit fallout, the two execs blessed the plan and Grant was approached by the producers at Warner Bros. We hear Hugh flew in and had 2 creative meetings. Things were progressing and he had all but a completed deal when he backed out unexpectedly. ‘It was not the money. He didn’t want to do TV because those 24 episodes are a grind and a lot of work. At the end he couldn’t get his head around doing a series.” Another insider tells us that, if Grant committed, “the show could have gotten another 3 to 4 more seasons”.
PREVIOUS FROM NIKKI FINKE: I’ve learned that one-time bad boy Hugh Grant was deep into final negotiations to replace Charlie Sheen as the lead on Two And A Half Men until he pulled out last night at the last minute due to creative differences. Insiders tell me he’d been offered more than $1 million an episode [UPDATE: but Warner Bros sources are now saying it was not that much], which is the sort of $25M-a-year payday Grant doesn’t get from movies anymore. All along insiders at Warner Bros and CBS had been saying that they were going after “an A-lister” as the new star of the top-rated sitcom after Sheen was fired, and Hugh sure fits the bill. (Let me tell you, I would have watched that show!) CBS has been working hard to announce the return of the show and its new star at next week’s upfronts. Maybe Grant will reconsider. Let’s hope. But it’s a decision that will affect not just CBS’ Nielsen ratings and advertising revenue but also billions of dollars of future syndication contracts for Warner Bros Television.
Insiders have been explaining to me that, at first, executive producer and co-creator Chuck Lorre wasn’t sure if he wanted to proceed with the show after Sheen’s implosion. With three successful sitcoms on CBS — Two And A Half Men, Mike & Molly, and The Big Bang Theory — Lorre was enjoying only showrunning two of them. But the problem, and it’s a very nice problem to have, is that there is so much moolah at stake because Two And A Half Men is a multibillion-dollar asset in syndication on terrestrial broadcast stations like the Fox station group, on cable with FX, as well as via multi foreign and DVD deals. The terrestrial contracts called for the stations to have to carry the show as long as Sheen was “of the essence” of each episode. Once Sheen left, the stations could get out of the contract. The hope was and still is that his replacement will be so compelling that the stations will want to continue the contract. Not so with the cable and foreign deals, where Charlie was not “of the essence”, meaning it didn’t matter to the contracts whether Sheen was in the show or not as long as the sitcom’s concept remained similar. This is why everybody have been working so hard to find a replacement, with names like Woody Harrelson, Rob Lowe, John Stamos and Jeremy Piven circulating in the blogosphere. But until now, with Deadline’s news about Hugh Grant, there’s been nothing concrete about actual negotiations going on with any specific actor to replace Sheen.
Sources close to Lorre have told me that he only wants to continue the show “if he can find the right actor and get excited about that.” What matters most to Lorre, I’m told, is that Sheen’s replacement be “somebody Chuck can work with” after butting heads with Charlie for years in a situation that escalated into a very public and nasty feud this spring. The feeling was to contract with “an exciting actor who’d never done TV before,” and Moonves especially was encouraging Lorre et al to “swing high”. As one insider told me, “Everybody wants show back and to support Chuck creatively and to do something the advertising community will feel good about. The only issue was whether everyone could get the show up and running and right fast enough to make this fall’s schedule.”

Heck yeah, bring Hugh on board and rename the show THREE MEN AND NO BABY.
No bring back Charlie Sheen!
This would be lovely. I would watch this too Nikki.
Hugh could also be the new boss at ‘The Office’. Dude is awesome.
I can’t believe Lorre’s having problems signing somebody for $25M/year.
wow…Now that would have been HUGE! be honest, Charlie Sheen was actually pretty awful on this show any way. i never understood why people watched it in the first place. Hugh Grant is hysterically funny. I wouldn’t advise him to take the job though. why step into an established show that’s probably only got a year or two left in the tank. if he’s willing to do tv then u can bet this news has opened pandoras box. EVERY sitcom pilot next year will be offered to him at a million an episode… you watch!
Don’t think so..Hugh Grant or not he will have to prove he can give them ratings..Charlie Sheen did but lot’s of A-listers failed, it could be the same for Grant. We don’t know.
It could be good, if he has the chemistry with the rest of the cast..but it will still be a “brit” copy of Charlie Harper..
p.s: by the way i love Charlie Sheen and Hugh Grant..and Hugh had also a wild sex-life..But he is not the “devil” like some people portray Sheen..maybe it is because Sheen shenanigans are more fresh and he doesn’t apologise about it..
Or maybe it’s because Hugh Grant has never beaten women or shot his fiance.
above all allegations but whatever..
By the way i love Hugh Grant but not sure about this cast, Two and a Half was based on Sheen’s life, let’s not forget the dynamic between Alan and Jake; core of the show.
Without Charlie Sheen there is no Two And a Half Men…..Sounds Like Chuck Lorre may be the real problem, not Sheen.
right on again!
Get rid of Lorre, too, and you’ve got a chance. His reputation for getting along with any strong actor/actress (no one fits that bill on BBT or M&M) says a lot about him. Hugh Grant would have been good for some viewers, but I think the core demographic would’ve rejected him.
are you people high this early in the morning? or you’re just chuck lorre’s family… lol… sounds like a joke inside a silly hollywood based movie… and the fact that there were creative differences already and they were looking for someone lorre could work with… that’s freaking hysterical
If only this change would happen. It is an EXCELLENT IDEA.This I would watch.
I HATE 2.5 Men/Boys who painfully refuse to grow up. However, Hugh Grant is an instant done deal. But make ‘em pay you, Hugh. $1M per is chump.
What about Bruce Willis? He started on TV and it’s not like his movie career is all that hot right now. I think he’d fit right in on the show and would be easily accepted by its audience.
He is not funny. Simple as that. So no thanks.
I’m with Nikki, I would have totally been psyched to watch that show. i have never seen Two and Half Men in my life, but with Hugh Grant I would have been there every week. Give him whatever he wants CBS and make this happen.
They need to stop messing about and get sheen back! Or make a movie for the show with sheen and finish the two and a half men forever.
I stopped watching 2 seasons ago but I would definitely return for Hugh Grant. That is an inspired casting idea. Hope it pans out.
I like that Entourage’s Doug Ellin pointed out in a print interview regarding that show’s upcoming final season that Jeremy Piven will be available to replace Sheen.
Yea I think that was good. Jeremy Piven would be soo much better than Hugh Grant. Because Grant isn’t funny AT ALL. Sorry!
And I want to keep Jeremy Piven on TV
. Would be too bad for him not to get another show. But it would probably better if he got a new show instead of riding a dead horse like TAHM. (Might be a cash cow now.. but with a recast, I don’t think anyone can pull off the same success that it had)
if there’s already creative differences… doesn’t that say something?
i wish someone would write the truth about the kind of person lorre is. i’m curious what he does that’s so annoying. is he just intense? insulting in a humorous way and it’s misunderstood? just a jerk?
come on… i can’t believe the big problem there was all one sided. and the fact that no one in hollywood who has worked with the man has said a word in his favor speaks volumes.
Are you ever on script w/ that statement, why has he had such difficult relationships w/ actors as well as in life? Not one of his peers have stepped up to the “stage” in defense of CL. Strange…..
Hugh Grant is so smart to back away from the opportunity& money.
Nikki, I would watch this show too.
I hope Grant reconsiders. Not only is he a terrific choice, but it would have to send the show in new directions with his take on the character (or would he be some long lost uncle?) As for those complaining that he’s a Brit, the other Hugh over at House seems to be able to carry a show just fine, and he played the blithering twit in all those Blackadders. It’s called acting. Hugh (both of them) can do it. After 8 seasons of Sheen, a switch to a Brit sounds absolutely brilliant.
Someone made a comment about Hugh Grant not being able to play an utter reprobate? Have you not seen the Bridget Jones movies? His portrayal of complete cad Daniel Cleaver is hilarious. I would LOVE to see him on Two and a Half Men. He would be completely brilliant. He could bring that show back to life and probably do a far better job than that burnout Charlie Sheen ever could!
Hugh, I’d watch you read the phone book! Go for it! So what if it doesn’t work out. Go for it!
They’ll have to settle for Dan Akroyd.
Anybody who thinks the problem with the show resides with anyone other than Charlie Sheen is deaf, dumb and blind. Either that, or you’ve been living under a rock. Charlie Sheen is an unprofessional fool who is self-destructing in a very public way. Nobody is irreplaceable. The producers just need to make the right decision and the chemistry needs to work. There are dozens of instances over the years of replacing actors or actresses who’ve played key characters in a series. In fact, if they kill off Charlie Harper and introduce a new character, it could be a breath of fresh air for a series which is already past its prime.
ok mrs lorre… whatever you say… ha
Worked with Grant and some of the funniest writers in the business, and Grant was easily the funniest human I’ve ever encountered– especially when he plays naughty, as in Bridget Jones and About a Boy. He would have been an amazing sub for Sheen. I hope the flirtation opens up the idea of Grant considering the right TV role. As a bumbling nice guy, he’s brilliant, but as a cad, he’d be phenomenal. His only problem is that very few writers can write a script in two months that’s as funny as he is off the cuff.
That would be awesome – hope Hugh reconsiders.
