It’s one and out for NBC’s latest Law & Order spinoff. I hear the network just canceled Law & Order: Los Angeles. It is hard to imagine what more NBC could do with the series. After a slow start, the network put the series on hiatus. Dick Wolf did a complete overhaul, bumping up Alfred Molina and Terrence Howard, letting go of several cast members, including Skeet Ulrich, and bringing in Law & Order veteran Alana De La Garza. But after a wide marketing campaign, the crime drama relaunched to ratings that were lower than the unimpressive numbers for its original run. LOLA did get a second chance at a complete reboot, something very few shows get. Its demise underscores the fact that, while dreaded and sometimes outrageously expensive, TV pilots serve a purpose. LOLA was hastily picked up straight-to-series as NBC canceled the mothership Law & Order series last May. The show tried to make amends midstream, but that is hard to do that after a poor launch.

I was afraid this would happen and its too bad, too. The extensive revamping was, I think, successful in much improving the show. The scripts and their storylines were also much improved and I was truly enjoying it. NBC just can’t get it right, somehow.
I am so upset especially with so many horrible shows on television that pass for entertainment. There are so many badly written and acted tv shows out there. It’s amazing how some of them stay on the air year after year! I love the cast of Law and Order Los Angeles. Corey Stoll is the reason I watch the show. He is fantastic and sexy with or without his mustache! I thought pairing his character TJ with Alfred Molina’s character was a great idea. They played well off of each other. Now another good show with really good writing and acting is going to be replaced….by what…another mindless reality show…or another really bad situation comedy(can we say “Perfect Couples,” “Mad Love,” “Happy Endings!”) I am so tired of getting into a quality tv show and looking forward to it each work only to find out that it isn’t performing high enough in the Neilsen Ratings. Networks don’t give shows enough time to grow. If the show is not a huge ratings hit out the gate, the network pulls the plug (ex. “Lights Out”). I only hope that somewhere there is a network executive smart enough to recognized Corey Stoll’s TALENT and MAJOR APPEAL and hire him for another show soon. I know that I will definitely watch anything he is in!
I thoroughly agree with this comment. I was really enjoying this show. It wasn’t depending upon sex to carry it through. Stoll and Molina are excellant.
I know! I really liked Corey Stoll too and thought he was great. Maybe they will hire him for Law & Order: SVU now that Christopher Meloni is leaving though….
I agree with your comments! I just get into a really good show like Law and Order Los Angeles and now I hear they are canceling it!! Why are those shows mentioned in your e-mail still running? I am having difficulty believing that people watch them! surely more people watch shows like Law and Order Los Angeles?
As usual, NBC has to screw up a good thing. The new, improved LOLA is great, but do they give it a chance….NO!! It needs at least one more season, in one time slot and not moving it around all over the place. I am thoroughly enjoying the new LOLA!! A pox on the NBC house, who I see are already putting new shows on the Fall lineup that are guaranteed to be stinkers….WTH?
i am shocked to hear this was canceled.this was a great show with a great cast i am very diaappointed.maybe you need to give these shows a little more time.i guess we’ll get another crappy realty show.thanks
I couldn’t agree more. It is to the point that I will not watch NBC anymore because just as start becoming acquainted with the charactors and context of the show they cancel it and take it off of the air. The reason that all of us love to watch the other Law &Order Episodes that have been on the air for at least a decade is that we as viewers are well acquainted with them and they have gone from a tv cliche to a real human being as their character. For Example: Oliva Benson and Stabler. It is same thing with Tony Soprano. I loved him, his anxiety disorder, and all of his problems about a year into the show. Just like you don’t fall in love with people overnight — you don’t fall in love televison shows over night. Quit cancelling things so quickly. It tells me that all NBC sees is profit and that NBC has little to no regard for its viewers. I am almost out of loyalty and ready to change channels!
I am so disappointed by this news. Your comments echo my own exactly, especially in terms of the stupid reality shows that have no problem staying on the air. I thought all the actors, especially Stoll, Howard, and the always excellent Molina, were top-notch.
I agree with you it’s a great show, I was also looking forward to see the next episode, I guess we won’t know the end of the mexican cartel and the detective…. looks like people don’t know how to appreciate a smart show with great actors. I don’t lose hope and maybe it will be back.
I have been watching Law and Orders since the beginning.
It’s pretty much the only series I watch. Now with all the
cancellations. I need to watch Law and Order Los Angelas.
Bring it back. I watched all the episodes. Love all the people
in it too. Please, forward this to the network that produces
the series. Forward this to the producers. I need my fix.
There are a lot of shows that are pretty dumb on TV. I agree with
the first comment.
Law & Order LA was to me the best of all the evolving series. Where can I get the videos?
You got it all right. Right on the button. Alfred Molina’s presence amplifies any cast. I think these actors should be given a chance to cause the show to grow on viewers. What is the alternative that NBC offers? Debasing entertainment?
Law & Order L.A. was the best show NBC had to offer in years, especially after revamping with the new stars. They were great and the story line was great. NBC executives don’t know what they are doing. Who is running this network?
Could Fox pick up the show, or another network?
You guys are absolutely right. NBC seems to be catering to the mindless where it thinks the big bucks are. LOLA was too intelligent for NBC. Its excellent actors should not be subjected to NBC moronic decision-making that disregards taste in place of low-quality kitsch.
I’m hoping some other network picks up LOLA. Such talent should not go to waste.
It seems like NBC wants people to watch other programs. They first cancel L & O then LOLA. Who runs this Company anyhow, gangsters? This sucks…..
Law & Order L A was one of my shows I looked forword to watching every week. now it’s gone, I dont think that NBC knows a good show when it see’s one. how come another net work dont take it,and put How I met your Mother’ on NBC. now thats a show that should be taken off. I dont thank that NBC has a show on that I watch anymore’ So please put it back. I thank that all the characters were great.
I have always loved all of “Law And Order” series. Since NBC cancelled LOLA, I assumed it was missing something. I bought the LOLA on DVD because of it being a “Law and Order” series and Terrence Howard. I was shocked at how very good it was. I couldn’t believe NBC had cancelled this show. NBC is a comedy mess so I don’t watch anyway. The shows on cable tv are great. If they put you on they will at least give the series a chance.
I just loved Law & Order Los Angeles. Even with the loss of the main character the scripts, acting, and general level of excellence made this the best of the Law & Order series. I’m really sad that it’s been canceled. Bummer!
I totally agree. I LOVED this show and was just getting into all the characters and NBC goes and cancels it!!
I thought the LOLA improved greatly after some casting changes and better stories. Too little too late. Also location may have been a huge problem. Die hard fans can only accept L&O in NY.
loved seeing the show filmed in LA…I loved recognizing locations, and seeing scenes of places have not been to in years since leaving CA. I was able to relate to the characters better than Law and Order and Law and Order SVU (have been an avid viewer of both for years…still watch Law and Order on TNT).
This cancellation is mind numbing…what will NBC put on? Why didn’t they give this show the old Law and Order time slot on Wed night?
I agree with you re being disappointed about the cancellation. I had trouble with the show when it first previewed in the fall because it was so different from the NY setting. However, I kept watching then the show disappeared. I had nit realized the show was back on with the cast updates until the second show. I love the show now! I was always a fan if the original series and L&O CI. Maybe USA can take over the production of L&O LA?..
the show was doing fine BEFORE you revamped it. cory and skeetch were doing a great job. now it sucks with alfred in there. the whole show almost sucks; if it wasn’t for cory i would watch it anyway. NBC sucks sometimes. no wonder CBS is doing better.
I agree that Corey and Skeet were doing a great job. I liked the show b4 the revamp. Seet is Nice to look at and now he is gone!! I still watch the show and enjoy the plots. Perhaps people are getting tired of seeing mkurder on TV and would rather STUPID shows that include non-stop sex (Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and more. If a main character should leave a show, it should be Robin Turrey from The Mentalist. It’s a great show, great lines and plots and all characters are great except her. I was sorry to see Skeet Ulrich leave.
Agreed completely! I just found the show and I am a die hard L&O fan. I LOVED Skeet and Rex Winters character. I am so sad they killed him off and canceled the show. Change your mind NBC – you didn’t give us fans enough time to realize it was here!!
Keep it going
it is good
NBC give it a chance
every time something is good it is gone
I am thoroughly disappointed to hear that NBC has discontinued
Law & Order LA. This is by far one of the best shows on TV. We never miss a show. The stories and acting get better as the show goes on. The program picked excellent actors to play the rolls though we do miss Skeet Ulrich. We believe that Law & Order LA is a lot more popular than NBC seems to think. Everyone we know watches this show. The show was good from the start and after the revamp it got even better. I don’t think the show got enough publicity to gain new viewers. Also I think a 9pm slot would give the show a chance for a bigger audience considering people with jobs that don’t stay up past 10pm. LA and SVU are the only shows we watch on NBC. NBC…GIVE THEM A REAL CHANCE!
The thing that is getting me is they are showing them out of order saying the episodes are new. I mean come on how the heck does Skeet die and then a ew episodes later he is back in action again wtf who is the genius that screwed that show order up very confusing.
My daughter and I really enjoy the show…BUT
How can Skeet return when he was murdered off, this does not make since to us. Whom wrote him out the first time needs to take a vacation. At least you could have taken him to the morque and on the way he breathes ‘oh my god’ he is alive, than he just stays in a coma for a few episodes.
Please explain to us how you did this and why? I mean really?
lmao i thought i missed a couple of shows i was so confused with skeet bein alive and i had no idea wat was goin on till i looked at this. imma big fan of lola DONT CANCLE THE SHOW GIVE IT A CHANCE I LOVE LAW AND ORDER.
I feel the same way about the order of the programs. I didn’t know what was going on. They made a big mistake canceling this show.
This was a good call by the network. I am a Law and Order fan from way back, but the Los Angeles version did not have the same appeal as the other series. There was very little interaction between the characters and no personal information at all. You never get to bond to the characters, and they don’t look like they even like each other. The other series are much better at drawing you into the story, and you get to really know the people. In LA version, you never know enough about them to care what happens to them, either personally or professionally. In my opinion Dick Wolf missed it on this one.
I am just too upset that NBC cancelled law and orderla. I loved the cast and the drama. Maybe another night or station would have been better.
Thanks! Carol
I think they should have kept Skeet Ulrich on the show, even with the revamping and great additions to the cast. In my opinion a bad decision to let him go.
That hiatus killed it
the horrific writing is what did it in.
the acting was good, but the plots were horrible.
it was painful to watch…
i am kind of surprised it lasted as long as it did.
Yes, painful indeed, one plot in the last episode I watched(the week of May 15th) was on on demand on cable and it was a parody of the Tucson shooting. There was an interview in which the guy says “rightwing nuts putting targets on the backs of the Senator and left wing nuts who want to use 2nd amendment remedies to effect government.” That did it for me, sorry but both of those characterizations were rightwing all the way in the real story, but they could not come up with an equivalent leftwing extremist argument that would invite the same violence as perpetuated by the rightwing which spews it all day long so the writing is just crazy(I know it is only a show and not a real documentary). Just remember it was Sharon Angle who said the thing about 2nd amendment remedies being a solution if the present administration keeps doing what it is doing; and of course it was Sarah Palin who put crosshairs on the districts of political opponents. Sad to see it go, but with the last episode I just talked about it shows they are really reaching for storylines and are feeling desperate. I liked Skeet Ulrich on the show.
That line upset me as well. I immediately turned off that episode and haven’t felt like watching the series since.
If they are going to offhandedly inject politics into a story, they had better at least get the talking points right. Otherwise, they’re sure to offend someone.
I agree that the changes they made really hurt the show. Letting Skeet go was the biggest mistake in my opinion. Adding Alana was a positive but the rest of the changes were just not what needed to happen. They needed to change the writers…not the cast.
No!! Why? This show needs time to grow! it`s so much better after the reboot!
Dude, it’s a LAW and ORDER franchisee. It shouldn’t have needed “rebooting” in the first place. It’s not like you had to introduce the concept of the show to an audience.
That’s what you get for making a deal to shoot at my house and then backing out last minute! ha
Shocker.
I think it’s silly of them to cancel so soon after the revamp, but whatever. Hopefully Corey Stoll lands on another series or more movies because I need him in my life! Regina Hall, too.
Best of luck to everyone.
Yea, had never heard of Corey Stoll before LOLA, but glad I made the discovery. He’s quite a talent.
Regina Hall is amazing, but continues to be underutilized.
Here’s hoping they both find projects worthy of their talents.
I don’t know why they thought this was a good idea instead of sticking with the original series.
No kidding. I LOVE the original show and SVU. I can not watch UK (the wigs make me laugh), Criminal Intent (never could get into it) or LA (BORING). Why can’t they leave well enough alone?
Not surprised. It was a bad show, dull cast, no personality to it. Not that the actors were all bad but they were all miscast.
Completely agree and the retool just didn’t work.
>>It is hard to imagine what more NBC could do with the series. <<
Move it to New York, and replace Coyote with Sam Watterson
Thank you!
No one is a better prosecutor than Waterston aka Jack McCoy.
Absolutely right. They didn’t even get a chance to wrap up the backstories other than Van Buren’s cancer. My problem with LA was that in the beginning, it looked like they weren’t sure who was going to be in the cast for the long run, hence the lack of an intro other than the generic L&O voiceover. Molina’s character going from prsecutor to detective was just too convenient, and reminded me of Ironside’s last season when Mark (MAAAAARK!!!) inexplicably went from a law student to a uniformed cop (!). I hope that they at least let them wrap up the Mexican druglord backstory.
The retool of the show worked. I was not a viewer before the retool, and since I have not missed an episode. Quality tv that should’ve been allowed to grow.
I watched before and after and the reboot was much improved, but I think people already gave up and the hiatus really didn’t help.
I personally found it painful to look at Alfred Molina. I know he is a good actor but he is a very unattractive human being. He’d make a great villain.
I hate to sound so shallow but to have a successful TV show, you need to have physically attractive actors in the major roles. It’s Casting 101.
Right Gary Orbach was quite a stud as is David Caruso (real looker in a pasty, doughy way), Hugh Laurie, boy he gets me hot, Eduard James Omos – yummy, Michael C. Hall, Patrick Stewart, and the sexiest TV star of all time (and, deservedly one of the most successful) James Gondalfino.
If the writing’s good the viewers will welcome someone who’s butt ugly but the writing for L&O LA wasn’t all that.
Don’t forget “Mike and Molly” and “Modern Family”
Stud Muffin City!
His face is like a scary Halloween mask. The other actors you mentioned have average everyman looks.
I blame the rug. He’s still prettier than Lenny Briscoe was.
I had a feeling this was going to happen. Why couldn’t they have just left this on Wednesday’s at 10pm? It was getting pretty good numbers then. I actually thought the reboot worked with Molina becoming a Cop (although far fetched) and brining in Alana de la Garza. I have a feeling alot of mothership fans are going to be gloating after this.
It was a bad idea from the get-go. Should have renewed L&O instead.
Yup.
THE KING IS DEAD! Looks like all the law order shows, for the most part, are on their way out.
The Dick Wolf-WME team is off to a terrific start.
L&O is such edgy television…for 1990.
LA is so over-used, it’s threadbare. They should have done something fresh, like L&O: Atlanta or even L&O: Cincinnati. So sick of LA. All we’ve had in crime drama is 50 years of LA.
I woulda killed off Corey Stoll before Skeet Ulrich… But I also would have kept them both and killed off one of the DA’s. Great to have marquis names but no need for Alfred Molina AND Terrence Howard here… Of course, I never would’ve canceled the original series and greenlit this one, either….
I gave it too many chances. I watched 12 episodes. Hoping it would be better. But then I gave up. Everything was bad – the acting, stories, supporting acting, the way it was shot… And they even didn’t bring THAT music to opening. Alfred Molina was the best thing about it. But when they rebooted it and make him police – they killed off even that good part. Because Alfred charm didn’t work as police oficer.
Good riddance.
I don’t even know why it cancelled the original L&O. I loved that show!
I’m a mothership fan and I am definitely gloating! Still not too late to give the mothership a proper send-off. Once Criminal Intent is done with its final season I will be Law & Order-less. (SVU wore out its welcome long ago when it became more about the special guest stars than the stories!)
I am gloating too. You cancel a 20+ year show like that? L&O needed a a proper 4 hour mini-series to wrap up the lives and send it off right. That’s what Dick Wolf gets.
Next up: Law & Order:Wichita
Dinosaur. Let’s move on.
Awww! and it was just starting to find its feet after the overhaul! Such a shame!
To be replaced by Wonder Woman? I kid of course.
