UPDATE 5:30 PM: And we’re done. Word is that NBC won’t be making more series pickups beyond the four shows from in-house studio UMS, thus prolonging the agony of producers awaiting word on the fate of their pilots until tomorrow. Also, I hear that the UMS-produced pilots that didn’t get a nod today are not necessarily dead, with dramas Grimm and Reconstruction said to be alive, and possibly comedies Bent, Parham/St. Clair and Dan Goor.
UPDATE 5:20 PM: The Emily Spivey comedy, starring Christina Applegate as a professional woman and new mom, is now officially a go as a series order with a new name, Up All Night.
PREVIOUS 4:55 PM: NBC opened its own pickup season today with a series order to the untitled Whitney Cummings comedy pilot, now titled Whitney, a romantic comedy created by and starring the racy comedienne; the Broadway-themed Smash, exec produced by Steven Spielberg and starring Debra Messing; and Prime Suspect, a
Maria Bello-starring adaptation of the classic British series. A pickup of the untitled Emily Spivey comedy starring Christina Applegate is also said to be under way. It seems like NBC is starting off by ordering the projects from its own studios (all four pilots above are from UMS) before moving onto outside suppliers, such as 20th TV, which has hot dramas REM and The Playboy Club as well as Metro, which is also in contention, and Warner Bros, which has the Chelsea Handler comedy in contention, while its Wonder Woman appears doubtful and Mann’s World highly unlikely at the moment.

Any work on Awake (REM)?
GRIMM!!!! WTF? i thought Grimm would be a shoo-in. They need some fantasy stuff on the peacock.
GRIMM GRIMM GRIMM
GRIMM was my favorite pilot this year, if NBC doesn’t pick it up someone else should. Seriously. Silas Weir Mitchell, Bitsie Tulloch, Russell Hornsby (who I saw on broadway w Denzel Washington & Viola Davis)… all star cast.
GRIMM all the way, Greenblatt.
“Heartily agree. On behalf of all Buffy and Angel fanboys (or in my case, men) out there:
GRIMM!!! Give it a chance, Greenblatt. It’s the only show you greenlit (besides Precint, which I heard was a mess) that involves visual effects and fantasy and gruesome fairy tales … Once Upon a Time ain’t gonna go at ABC, so how about greenlighting a show by writers who have proven themselves to be consistently inventive. Buffy? Angel? Profit? X-Files? And now it’s on the bubble?
By the way, there are several online polls regarding favorite NBC drama pilots, and GRIMM is coming in FIRST, followed by Playboy, then Smash.”
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Stories of Brothers Grimm re-told in modern day? By same people who did Buffy and Angel? How about out something like this on the air for a change?
Dear NBC,
If you have time, find some of the Buffy/Angel fan polls, and the horror fan polls who were obsessively looking forward to Grimm, or even the” unbiased” zap2it.com poll about which NBC dramas people WANT to see. Playboy first, GRIMM close second, Smash a distant, distant third.
REM is something Zucker would have gone for. Wonder woman only got the attention it did because it was SO TERRIBLE, Metro (really? Smits was awful on Outlaw and has lost whatever charm he once had), 17th Precinct didn’t live up to hype (which was only casting related, not material related, in the first place), Reconstruction I didn’t read but I heard only so-so things about. Maybe a cable network will want it? I for one don’t want to watch period stuff on primetime.
Audiences want Playboy and Grimm. Please give us a reason to watch your network again.
Just reading the “Sexual Revolution” post, and while I’m not sexist whatsoever, someone made an astute comment over there: “I think men have largely abandoned broadcast network television as a source of entertainment BECAUSE of this trend.”
NBC is not Lifetime. I would like to see a show like Grimm with cops, gruesome tails, monsters, one hot woman thrown in for good measure (Bitsie Tulloch), but otherwise a show that men (and women, as my wife told me she was looking forward to watching something “scary” again on TV) WANT to watch.
GRIMM or bust, NBC.
actually GRIMM is coming in first in online polling. 35% to P’s 32%. Smash 3rd w 9%
Actually, GRIMM is over 38%. Playboy 31%. The other shows are barely garnering interest in comparison.
Either way, as long as GRIMM, Playboy, and Smash are on air, I’ll be watching the peacock again.
in regards to the whitney show…tooo much laughing from the audience!!!! let thoe show carry itself!!!! Shes funny dont need the extra!!!
Love Whitney Cummings, she’s an obvious star!
Aww… Whitney comments on her own stuff. That’s Adorable! This show will last longer than the Paul Reiser Show, but shorter than Perfect Couples. NBC = quality television.
Yep. Multi-cam, perfect for CBS, but dead on NBC in 3…2…1…
what’s with all the old(ish) ladies? debra messing, maria bello, christian applegate (still hot), whitney cummings (nasty to begin with and now she’s gotten so much botox she looks 45).
PLAYBOY: Amber Heard (enough said)
GRIMM: Bitsie Tulloch, Claire Coffee
can we please get some young hotties running around on my TV set? Gracias!
p.s. no i will not watch CW to get my young hottie fix. i am a man, not a 14 year old chick
Give me PLAYBOY!!!!
I hope they pick up Are you there, Vodka? It`s me, Chelseas, Help Wanted, Mann`s World and maybe Wonder Woman.
Will Arnett as a dad, let’s see it!!!!
Bizarre and awful casting. Applegate is very talented. Arnett is atrocious — and as all his previous shows have proven, nobody wants to watch him on TV.
The Arnett audience is typically low-intelligence teenage males. That group does not count in the demo for TV ratings (fortunately).
This show will not make it to Season 2.
Will Arnett was the best part of Arrested Development. Maybe his series tend not to do well, but that’s no fault of his. He’s brilliant when he’s cast correctly.
Let’s not. Will Arnett isn’t a second banana, much less a leading man. That role’s gotta be recast ASAP.
Any word yet on Kari Lizer’s untitled pilot?
Hope they give it a chance, it’s funny in a way NBC could use — in other words, does not assume that all viewers are of minor intelligence. I don’t get the Chelsea phenomenon.
Please pick up “Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea”
So I guess Wonder Woman wasn’t a lock after all.
It sounds like its only Universal produced series getting early pickups. WW is 20th Fox
Good. Looked and sounded abysmal. Costume and actress were both horrible. Lynda Carter’s legacy is secure.
I thought FOX choices were better, the story lines are more compelling and interesting.
Alex Cunningham rocks. Prime Suspect is going to be great!
Nice to see the hilarious Whitney Cummings get a series order. Maybe NBC will see that multi-cam comedies can work on network TV and usually to better ratings (CBS anyone?)
any rumors about when cbs/abc are going to start pick ups? tonight? tomorrow? ….friday?
Uh-oh. If the NBC/UMS pickups have all been made, then where does that leave RECONSTRUCTION??? I loved that script.
Reconstruction = totally mezzo-mezzo pilot. script was better. and that’s being generous.
I seriously hope, for Greenblatt’s sake, that he picks up Playboy and Grimm.
So you’re saying with the 5:30pm update that Greenblatt is only picking up 3 hours of programming? That’s insane! He is leaving the bulk of GE/Zucker’s shows on the air? It makes no sense.
I smell more pickups coming. I think the internal pickups come first and more are on the way.
Sorry Maria, I think it’s a little late for an American “Prime Suspect”.
What is the allure of Chelsea Handler? Just don’t get it.
I am very upset about the “Chelsea Handler” project not being picked up! I just know that show would have been amazing. I hope it gets picked up last minute…
As the article states, they only picked up shows produced by their own companies today. Chelsea’s is produced by Warner Bros., and they are saving their other pickups for announcements at upfronts. It does not in any way mean it’s not getting picked up. Like I said, with Laura Prepon in the lead and Chelsea in at least the pilot, they’d be stupid not to pick it up. I have a lot of faith that they will.
I’m trying to be fair here, but in all honesty maybe one of those shows has a slim chance to stick. Whitney Cummings is unlikeable – next. Mario Bello is great, but viewers won’t give a drama on NBC, esp. from an actress who’s new to TV viewers, a chance. A Broadway pick up? For network TV? On NBC? Are you fucking serious? The 35 or so states that comprise the interior of the country will never give that a chance. So that leaves the Applegate show, which has a chance, just like all of her shows, to stick around for a couple of years. Although since she’s on NBC this time, her lead-ins will be weaker, so probably not.
Oh well. better luck next time, Peacock.
“A Broadway pick up? For network TV? On NBC? Are you fucking serious? The 35 or so states that comprise the interior of the country will never give that a chance.”
Quoted for life. No matter how much praise is heeped on this pilot/show, it`ll never live past one season or even less. Most of the viewership doesn`t care for the content even if they like some stars (Messing,McPhee). They won`t hit with Glee crowd either ebcause it isn`t teen oriented.
Maria Bello was on ER. On NBC, natch.
Stereotypes much? Lots of the people who come to Broadway shows are tourists from those 35 states, not to mention that people go to the theater all over the country.
I’m not saying the show will be a success. I’m saying backstage theater stories have been Middle-America mainstream since the invention of motion pictures and before.
Good that Cummings’ pilot made it (and presumably Handler’s once they get around to the non-Universal shows). NBC needs multi-camera shows and viewers need multi-camera shows that aren’t by Chuck Lorre. I hope Applegate’s show goes on Thursday and the multi-cams go on another night – single-cam and multi-cam shows need to be kept separate.
I’d love to see Goor’s multi-cam pilot make it too but I fear it won’t fit with their schedule plans.
They’d be morons not to pick up the Chelsea Handler pilot. But then again, this is NBC… Happy for Whitney Cummings though, she’s hilarious. Although I’m not really a fan of people playing themselves.
i just consulted my chinese menu and sure enough 2011 is the year of the chick!
Whitney Middle-aged???? What are you calling Middle-aged? She hasn’t even reached 30 yet!
Look at her, doofus. She’s had work done.
I’m so excited for Whitney Cummings! It’s great NBC is putting middle-aged women on TV!
I have this feeling that Wonder Woman will get pick up despite the low buzz and will undergoes massive retooling. Maybe it’s just me
I am sorry but its just you… Wonder Woman looks awful…
I love Whitney,
Smash will be funny, I really want to see Don Johnson in a Manns World too!
They MUST pick-up the Chelsea Handler pilot, it would go great with Whitney’s (she is on Chelsea Lately very often). If they don’t pick up Chelsea’s then I refuse to watch any of the new shows.
Every time a marginally hot girl displays talent of any sort she’s automatically worshipped. Cummings is obnoxious and her pilot sucked.
Hey, NBC! Pick up Reconstruction and give us a reason to start watching your network again. If you have any sense at all, your schedule should look something like this:
Sunday: NFL Football
Monday: The Voice / SMASH / THE FIRM
Tuesday: The Biggest Loser / PRIME SUSPECT
Wednesday: RECONSTRUCTION / AWAKE / Law & Order: SVU
Thursday: UP ALL NIGHT / Community / Office / Parks / PLAYBOY
Friday: Parenthood / …IT’S ME, CHELSEA / WHITNEY / Harry’s Law
Saturday: Minute to Win It / Who Do You Think You Are? / Dateline
