Lee Pace has been cast as Thranduil the Elven King in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. Best known for Pushing Daisies, Pace just wrapped the role of Garrett in Bill Condon’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Pace is currently starring on Broadway in The Normal Heart, which opened to raves last Thursday. He is repped by CAA and Management 360.

I was personally hoping for David Tennant, but Lee Pace will be an excellent Elven King!
Thought that Pace was a breakout star on “Pushing Daisies” – glad to see him get a better role than “Marmaduke.”
Awww. I was hoping for David Tennant. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I think Lee Pace is awesome…but David Tennant would have been epic.
Yeah, I feel the same way: Tennant would have been amazing. Here’s hoping Jackson will still put Tennant in the film – maybe as Bard??
I do like Lee Pace, though, and am happy for him. I’ve just never seen him play anything other than cuddly, shy Ned on Pushing Daisies. But Jackson seems excited about casting him, so I will be optimistic.
Pace is awesome. He was great in “The Fall,” great in “Soldier’s Girl,” even great in “Good Shepherd,” but yes, stabbed his credibility in the face just a bit with “Marmaduke.” But hey, even Clooney has “Batman & Robin” and luckily, no one saw “Marmaduke.”
Tennant?? Blehhhh. He would have been the most quirky, unnerving Thranduil ever.
I like that Peter Jackson is using relatively unknown actors. It’ll make it easier to “disappear” into Middle-Earth when the film is released. If he had cast David Tennant I would be sitting there thinking “Oh look, there’s Dr Who playing an elf”.
As opposed to “Oh look, there’s Doctor Who playing a wizard”?
But I’m quite happy with the Pace casting, though it would be nice to see Tennant elsewhere in the films.
Wait, I thought Aidan Turner was playing this role and that’s why he had to quit Being Human? *confused*
Aidan Turner is playing one of the dwarves.
Aidan is playing one of the dwarves- Kili.. I was hoping for David Tennant as well but Lee look’s more like he could be Legolas Dad!
Thanks for the clarification. Odd, I could’ve sworn it was Aidan but I guess that was just a rumor.
Re: people wanting David Tennant, he may have gotten to the point in his career where he’s too busy to commit to such a long and hectic filming schedule and would have probably turned it down. Let’s not forget he also has a new baby and a wedding to deal with soon.
I would’ve loved Colin Morgan (Merlin) to play an elf, he’s definitely got the ears for it! But he’s probably too busy, too.
Lee Pace is just too awesome ! And i can’t wait for him playing as Garrett (Twilight Saga:Breaking Dawn) and the Hobbit as well.
aza aza fighting !!
