He’s done it again! Escape artist CHUCK, which has successfully cheated cancellation for the past two years, will be coming back to fight again next season. I hear a deal is being finalized for a 13-episode order to the NBC spy dramedy. (The other Warner Bros.-produced, yet-to-be-renewed NBC series, David E. Kelley’s HARRY’s LAW, has long been considered a good bet to return). It is unclear what CHUCK‘s renewal bodes for NBC’s other big bubble Monday show, LAW & ORDER: LA. After getting a rare second chance with a complete reboot that has largely failed, it is unclear what more NBC can do with the show. But as they say, never bet against Dick Wolf. PARENTHOOD, which has done solid business in its Tuesday 10 PM slot, is expected to return, while THE EVENT is not. Also probably out is comedy OUTSOURCED despite a fan campaign to save the workplace show.
Last year, CBS went for a bloodbath, canceling seven series, including some decent performers like The Ghost Whisperer and The New Adventures of Old Christine. The network, which is yet to find a series that does as well as Ghost Whisperer in the Friday 8 PM slot, is not expected to go for such a dramatic overhaul this year. I hear a deal is almost done for RULES OF ENGAGEMENT to be renewed as CBS seems to be summoning all of its veteran comedies as flagship Two and a Half Men faces an uncertain future. There is even talk about possibly bringing $#*! MY DAD SAYS sans star Jonathan Sadowski. Even long-forgotten legal dramedy THE DEFENDERS is not completely dead. As one insider noted, the show starring Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell did better than any other CBS series in the Friday 8 PM season this season. Things don’t look good for midseason comedy MAD LOVE, though CBS brass loooove Jason Biggs, while CBS’ other midseason entry, crime drama spinoff CRIMINAL MINDS: SUSPECT BEHAVIOR, is at 50/50 as its performances has been largely disappointing given its pedigree. As for CSI: MIAMI and CSI: NY, word is that the entire CSI franchise, a big off-network and international seller, is safe for next season.
At least two of the CW’s three bubble dramas, NIKITA, ONE TREE HILL and HELLCATS, are expected to come back. Freshman NIKITA and veteran ONE TREE HILL, which have stronger ratings, are considered sure bets. Additionally, NIKITA is a big international seller for CW co-owner Warner Bros TV, it has been on a ratings upswing lately, and I hear its meeting pitching next season went well. OTH continues to be solid and may be used to launch a new series, while HELLCATS has been soft in the ratings.
ABC has a lot of bubble shows, but only a couple have a shot at returning next season. Midseason drama BODY OF PROOF and comedy HAPPY ENDINGS seem the most likely to score a renewal, with Body of Proof almost a lock as it has been the highest-rated new ABC drama this season and logged another solid showing last night. Meanwhile, Happy Endings has a lot of support within ABC. We will see this week if the comedy will get a bump from all the publicity surrounding the muted out Osama bin Laden joke last Wednesday. The other two freshman comedies awaiting their fate, BETTER WITH YOU and the Matthew Perry starrer MR. SUNSHINE are considered longer shots, while dramas DETROIT 1-8-7 and NO ORDINARY FAMILY are pretty much dead. As for V, most believe that the alien drama has no chance but it is not 100% dead. But BROTHERS & SISTERS looks good to return for an abbreviated final season.

Why did Bob Greenblatt renew the show? Anyway, I’m looking forward to Smash, The Playboy Club, Awake (formerly REM) and Reconstruction. Playboy got some mixed reviews, but I think it has the potentil to grow and become a great show.
potential
GRIMM, Playboy, Prime Suspect, Smash = Brand new, GOOD NBC
Chuck jumped the shark after season 1. Blegh.
Can’t wait for PLAYBOY CLUB. Agreed, great potential for NBC.
Renew Happy Endings and Nikita!
Well Chuck me, this news made my day.
Cool, CHUCK’S BACK!!! Now Maybe Matt Miller can return to write his Human Target scripts on the right show.
Here’s what NBC can do for LAW & ORDER: LA > Renew it and move it to Wednesdays at 10.9c and keep it there. Move SVU back to Tuesday nights at 10.9c.
What about just bringing back the original? I know the sets woer torn down and used for SVU…but the original could do the same thing…build new (or replicate the old)…just say Connie’s mom died, and after a year of grieving moved back to NYC.
Law & Order: LA is HORRIBLE. It shouldn’t be renewed. This is Greenblatt’s opportunity to do for NBC what he did for Showtime: pick up some great, original, thrilling programs.
My picks:
Smash
Untitled Emily Spivey
Grimm
Prime Suspect
Agree! NBC needs new voices. What happened to Stephen Gaghan’s show??
Can someone tell me if there have been substantial rewrites on Grimm? I read the pilot a while back and thought it was just TERRIBLE, yet it seems to have a lot of buzz. Has it changed, or are people just excited about a bland procedural simply because it involves fairy tales?
Although I think LA isn’t as good as SVU and the original, some of its actors are quite good in the series. Namely, Alfred Molina and Peter Coyote as the D.A.
I totally agree with that statement!
Any news on V?
It’s mentioned; but you won’t be happy.
Worst decision NBC could make would be to keep Chuck on Mondays at 8pm. Move it to Fridays!
Does not putting anything about “Brothers & Sisters” into the bubble category signify they didn’t come to a shortened season conclusion?
I think the more likely case is that there hasn’t been much news since she last wrote about it.
Thank you for update on Nikita! We need this show to come back!
Anything on Brothers & Sisters?
*on the edge of my seat*
Gonna bring back Shit My Dad Says without Sadowski? Guess CBS finally realizes they messed up big time when they re-cast that role.
I agree. The actor they had originally (his name is lost on me) that was on COUGAR TOWN is much funnier and more likeable. I didn’t get why they did that either.
Although, it seems odd to cut the character based on the person who started the Twitter the show is based on. They just need to cancel this horrible series and put everyone out of their misery.
The casting before Jonathan was even worse.
I hope Chucks pick up isn’t at the expense of not picking up Parenthood and/or Harry’s Law. I really hope ABC decides to pick up V. Atleast one more shortened season to wrap it up. Season 2 was a strong season and really got V on a good storyline.
Chuck’s pick up much more likely impacted Wonder Woman than Parenthood.
Good idea re: SHIT MY DAD SAYS.
Sadowski isn’t awful, but if they do better that show could really be great!
CHUCK!!!!!! Excellent news. But give it a different timeslot to seehow it’ll do there.
I’m glad that Nikita is likely to be returning for season 2!!!
It’s going to be interesting to see whether any broadcast networks will even bother with first-run scripted programming on Friday nights this coming Fall.
Although my heart says I’d like to see some first-run scripted series scheduled for Fridays, my head says that the broadcast nets will fill Friday nights with newsmagazines, reality, and reruns.
What about METRO!?!?!? I’m super excited to see what Stephen Gaghan has in store for TV. Why don’t they get rid of L&O:LA and put a show that’s really about LA on the air?
PLEASE RENEW NIKITA! I can’t stop watching that show, very addicting..
Gotta get my Walker fix every week! Come on abc, bring us more Brothers & Sisters. Kitty’s preggers!! Love the expanding Walker clan!
Any one in the know want to tell us why Bob Greenblatt would pick up Chuck for another 13 episodes? Did he say to Warner Bros. that if he didn’t pick up Wonder Woman, that he would pick Chuck up? Is it because he didn’t want to pick up Wonder Woman. Why did he pick up Chuck at those ratings levels?
Why pick-up Chuck? It has great plots, really interesting characters, it is a family show and it has Sarah Walker. It also proves that the male and female leads can be in a relationship and have interesting storylines.
Happy endings please!!!! We need good 1/2 hour comedies and this was the best of the new ones, IMO. Give it a real shot !
Chuck sucks NBC needs to cut bait on this show
STILL no update on pilot screenings??
I wanna know how the screenings for ABC went on Monday!
I just want Awake (REM) and Reconstruction picked up.
1) I’m absolutely giddy that Chuck has been renewed. I’m thinking that NBC is going to use it as a lead-in to Wonder Woman, which I’m not enthused about, but I’ll take new Chuck for whatever reason. Thanks, Subway! Must go get a foot-long Italian BMT now . . .
2) If it comes down to a choice between any two of Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, CSI: New York and CSI: Miami, then I pick ditching CSI: Miami. CSI: Horatio stopped being fun even for camp once they elevated Adam Rodriguez’s Delko to practically martyr status a couple of years ago — and moreover, it’s been unreasonable to require Emily Procter to act for the both of them for so many seasons already.
IMO, the best move that Suspect Behavior made was bringing Janeane Garofalo on as the team’s caffeinated, misfit second-in-command, Beth — she keeps every scene that she’s in with Forest Whitaker moving when Whitaker’s eccentric Zen-philosophizing could easily grind it to a screeching halt. Nevertheless, the show *still* needs one more wiry type-A headliner to join Garofalo in balancing out Whitaker’s tics.
CSI: New York should stay because a) it’s the only cast amongst the three CSI series that really gels these days, b) because the genius addition of Sela Ward as former FBI Agent Jo Danville has given the show a sense of humor and heart and c) because if it’s a matter of the budgets, the show could absolutely survive if Gary Sinise were to leave or cut down his episode count. She ups the A-game of Sinise and A.J. Buckley as Adam, especially. And I *love* that the show is paired with Blue Bloods on Fridays.
3) I’m glad that Nikita is doing well in overseas markets. It’s a fun show and I’m almost inclined to start searching for the Peta Wilson series just for the hell of it. I would think that Nikita would get moved to 8pm Fridays next season (or perhaps 9pm on Fridays with Supernatural moving to 8pm) so that The Secret Circle gets paired with its Vampire Diaries sibling.
4) I can’t believe that Mr. Sunshine is anything other than dead, dead, deader than Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben dead. Awful, horrible, no-good very bad show.
5) Better With You is a classic example of an 8:30 show. It’s sweet, due in large part to Joanna Garcia and the goofball who plays her husband, but it’s hampered by the writers’ bizarre unwillingness to make Jennifer Finnigan and Josh Cooke likable even though those few of us who watched their previous show, “Committed,” know that they are *fantastic* romantic leads with great comedic timing.
6) I’ve never seen Hellcats, but it seems to me that a cheerleader show is a fairly original setting for a CW-format show. If I programmed the CW, I’d roll the dice, give it a 13-episode renewal and use it as a utility player (ala Rules of Engagement for its for four seasons) for when the sucktastic One Tree Hill and/or the equally sucktastic 90210 are in reruns.
Rob,
One of the more thoughtful and enlightened posts I’ve read on here. Well done. (And I could not agree more, especially on the Better With You front.)
I may be wrong, but I think 90210 is one of their top rated shows… I like the idea of using HELLCATS or another show to fill their way-too-long-we-will-lose-so-many-viewers hiatuses.
Hellcats is soft porn drivel. If they can’t do any better than this, they should go out of business.
90210 is nothing but soft porn. At least their other soaps try to move away from that sometimes. But 90210 is full bore soft porn 100% of the time. The irony is that their porn is so boring. Viewers are already talking of jumping ship next season since everyone has left high school.
I’d rather have Harry than Chuck. It’s played out.
I’d cut both CSI’s for the same reason.
I love Janene and am surprised by the negative reaction from some critics.
I remember Jennifer from her stints on Crossing Jordan and The Dead Zone; and think that it will take more skill to make her likable than the average sitcom writer is capable of.
You don’t want to see Hellcats; Baaaaad.
I’m glad someone else here saw committed because jennifer and josh were so good in that series.
Agree with a lot of this post.
I am curious about CMM:SB, if it will be brought back or not. Does need some substantial re-tooling.
(Would they bring it back as another mid-season entrant, or would they prefer to up the ep count, if they intend to keep the series?)
Not a show I’ve taken to, in any case.
So, with Fringe, and now Chuck, I give up on trying to predict just about anything, lol.
Maybe the change up in NBC’s line up means they are finally moving away from the cookie cutter cop show and will give us something new and exciting in the genre. I really hope they give Gaghan’s new show a chance.
