UPDATE: The final ratings for American Idol are in. The star-studded finale posted a 9.2 rating in adults 18-49, up 12% from last year, and 29.3 million, up 21% from last year. Some 38.6 million tuned in between 10-10:07 PM when Scotty McCreery was crown the winner. It is still the first time in five years that the finale grew year-to-year among adults 18-49 and in three years among total viewers.
PREVIOUS: Fox’s American Idol reversed the downward finale rating trend last night. The two-hour Season 10 closer drew a 8.9/25 in adults 18-49 and 28.2 million viewers in the fast nationals. That is up 9% in the demo and 17% in total viewers from last year’s finale, the first time in five years that the reality juggernaut has posted growth for the finale among adults 18-49 and in three years among total viewers. Because of a seven-minute overrun, which is not accounted for in the fast nationals, the American Idol numbers are expected to grow further in the finals, which will be available within the hour.
The only network to put up originals against the American Idol finale was ABC, which aired the season finales of the comedies that are returning next season. The Middle (2.2/7) was down 12% from last year’s finale. Following a Modern Family repeat at 8:30 PM, the season ender of the Emmy-winning comedy (4.1/11) was down a modest 5% from last year’s finale and will likely erase some or most of the deficit in the finals. That won’t happen for fellow sophomore comedy Cougar Town (2.0/5), which was down a steep 29% from last year’s finale. After the hourlong Cougar Town, the first-season ender of Happy Endings (1.7/4) at 10:30 PM was up 31% from its last telecast. Two other originals aired in the 10 PM hour, both already-canceled dramas: CBS’ Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior ended its run with a 2.0/5, flat with last week, and NBC’s Law & Order: LA (1.4/3) was up a tenth from the Monday episode.

This AI finale was the worst yet. Over-wrought, over-blown, over-done. And they couldn’t do it in 2 hours – they needed 2 hours and 7 minutes! They should’ve cut Steven Tyler’s ‘song’, that weird Bono/Slash ‘Spiderman’ dirge, Tony Bennett, and aging Beyonce with her odd need for exposure. And Ryan Seacrest – geez.
So much for two country singers bringing the ratings down.
Why wasn’t Jimmy Iovine involved? He was the only good thing that came out of the judges “non judging” panel all season.
Savvydude – you are crazy. Sorry you didn’t enjoy 2 hrs of free entertainment from some of the hottest artists out there today. BUt agree on Seacrest. What a robot.
They may have show ratings, but they’ve lost credibility with being able to truly launch a singer’s career post Idol. Why? In my opinion, it’s because they aren’t getting truly talented, well-rounded artists on the show anymore. I’m convinced that the reason Idol can’t attract edgier artists is because of its corny, Glee club-ish ensemble numbers with the matching outfits and grandpa choreographed dancing. Not to be outdone by the embarrassing Ford commercials those contestants are made to participate in throughout the season. No singer/musician with any sense of artistic integrity is going on that show. Only singers with marginal talent and a make-it-at-any-cost (even if it means acting like cruise ship entertainers while singing a Lady Gaga cover) will be on Idol. They need to shake up the format if they are going to compete with new Idol knock-offs like “The Voice”, who seem to be avoiding the sell-out vibe, in future years.
Seacrest is fine. He’s hokey, but he makes it look effortless.
Check out Carson Daly on The Voice; I can’t believe he’s had a talk show for years. Calling him wooden is an insult to wood.
Unlike most A.I. finales, it didn’t put me sleep once. By 3am the Drudge report leaked the results, calling Scotty the winner by 2 to 1. A.I. went into damage control and de-emphasized the fake win drama. Classic T&A ruled with a PG-13 Madonna-like Gaga act that pushed family hour, with a simulated sex act with a leather-clad dancer on the floor of her elevated stage.
Scratching my head over savvydude’s assessment of last night’s “Idol” finale. I actually loved that performance from “Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark” star Reeve Carney, Bono and the Edge as well as Steven Tyler, Beyonce, TLC, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Lady GaGa and the Idol contestants. The 2+ hours of “American Idol” was the most entertaining night of television since the ACM and CMA awards programs this past year.
Here is a reality check for the naysayers: Idol has produced a ton of stars both winners and runners up. In a music world populated by a plethora of one-hit wonders and non-descript hip-hop sound-alikes, in just 9 years, “Idol” has produced, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Kellie Pickler, Jordin Sparks and Fantasia Barrino. That’s a pretty damn good track record and who knows what other past contestants may yet rise to prominence?
I have no doubt the country music fans will embrace Scotty McCreery as they have Carrie Underwood and the crossover artist, Kelly Clarkson. Songwriters will be lining up to have this young, likable kid croon their music. I’m rooting for him.
Now if only Jennifer Lopez would just sign up to continue as a judge in season 11… Idol only made me like her even more. They need to continue this trio. The chemistry is as good as the first few seasons of Idol, before Simon Cowell became gratingly acerbic. Season 10 was the most enjoyable in the last few years. There is no doubt Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez breathe new life into the show.
Enjoyed the entire show last night. None of it was over-wrought, over-blown, or over-done. It was great entertainment. Steven Tyler was terrific, as was the whole evening. BTW, Scotty will become a big star in C&W, just you wait and see. What a down to earth kid! Nice to see class win out every once and awhile.
I thought the jam-packed Idol finale was completely awesome. Such a diversity of entertainers, inter-acting with multi-generational performers, and they pulled it off!!To see the likes of Tom Jones and Tony Bennett, in there with BONO and the Gaga! I’ll never miss a finale again. Oh, and the two kids who won? They’re awful young, just hope they stay grounded.
