Bubble shows are getting their final chance to make a case for renewal this week, and ABC’s comedy Better with You did its best last night. The multi-camera comedy, considered a long shot for renewal, drew a 1.9/6 in adults 18-49, up 19% from last week for the biggest week-to-week gain among all programs last night. ABC’s Wednesday comedy block was up across the board last night except for the other series that needed it, freshman Happy Endings (1.7/4) at 10 PM, flat with last week despite a stronger lead-in. At 10:30 PM, the comedy pulled a 1.4/4, also even with last week. The Middle (2.1/7) was up 5%, Modern Family (4.2/11) up 8% and Cougar Town (2.4/6) up 9%.
Fox’s American Idol (6.9/20, 22.4 million) was up 8% from last week’s fast national demo number (because of Idol‘s rise in the finals, the apples-to-apples comparison is with its fast national results.) Breaking In (2.4/6) held steady, even with last week. The network once again won the night in all key measures. CBS’ Survivor: Redemption Island (3.0/9) was down a tenth from last week for a series low but may bounce back a tenth in the finals. Criminal Minds (3.3/9) was up a tenth while Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (2.1/6) was down 5%. Following a new Minute to Win It (0.9/3, down 10%) and a Minute to Win It repeat (1.1), which actually did better than the original, Law & Order: SVU (2.4/6) was down 8% from last week but still won the 10 PM hour.

Really hope Better With You Returns. It’s been consistently enjoyable throughout the year and I’m curious how they’d change the dynamic with a newborn in the second season.
I love Better With You. Would really like to see it grow. I think it could really hit a stride with an additional season.
Good job, Better With You. This is why I love upfront week!
Happy Endings!!! C’mon ABC – its a great show with a bad timeslot! Funniest new show of the bunch.
Happy Endings!!! C’mon ABC – its a great show with a bad timeslot!
I, too, hope for a second season of “Better With You”. I really enjoy “Happy Endings” as well, but I think the 10PM hour is a killer for sitcoms/comedies. Perhaps, ABC can add a second night of comedies in the Fall.
It’s pretty impressive ABC stuck with this comedy, and it’s starting to pay off. Better With You began as a tired sitcom that had a great cast, great writers, and a simple, enjoyable premise that lent itself to natural sitcom humor. It was charming though not hysterical, but had enough “moments” to let viewers know that once it hits it’s stride, this is going to be a show to watch and leave you feeling good. With some terrible episodes and cringe-worthy moments of awkward timing, the cast now feels comfortable with another, the pace has changed a bit, and the comedy is more on target and, well, frankly, funnier. Better With You proves that you need to invest time, not just money, into those shows you Networks pour millions of dollars in and then cancel at the first inkling of poor ratings. If you believe enough in your shows, there’s a reason, and chances are the public will too. Better With You is proof of that, deserves a second season, and is going to end up being a syndication darling because it’s pure “sitcom”, something that’s hard to find these days.
Time is something shows do not get on ABC.
Please don’t cancel Happy Endings! I’m loving it too much!
BETTER WITH YOU has really grown. It’s gotten more complex and interesting as the season’s worn on; it deserves a sophomore year. I love how they managed to blend the two most shopworn sitcom attention-getters — a birth and a wedding — into the same episode.
You know who I watch most closely on that cast? Debra Jo Rupp. She’s a pro, and delightful.
I love Better With You it has so much potential. This show has grown. ABC please think about giving Better With You a 2nd season. Mia just had a baby and got married. We(people who watch and like BWY) want another season. You should listen to the fans. See our point of view. I’m not being mean.
Just spit balling here….. Why not move DANCING WITH THE STARS to a Sunday and Monday block, providing a better lead in for Desperate Housewives and possibly Good Christian Bitches. Move Home Edition to Sundays at 7pm and throw Funniest to Fridays.
This would pave the way for two killer four comedy blocks on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Modern Family, The Middle, Cougar Town, Happy Endings and Better With You along with three more comedies.
Sounds good. ABC should pay you to program.
Desperate Housewives, a show that use to pull 11s demo and over 20 million viewers needs a big lead-in?
I agree with the comment by PICK IT UP, especially the part about it having great writers. They clearly break stories with the dials turned to the right.
Come on ABC! Please, please stick with Happy Endings. I look forward to it every week. It’s in a terrible time-slot. I wouldn’t doubt Cougar Town would be around 4 Million in this slot. It’s lucky because it gets the Modern Family lead-in. Give Happy Endings another shot. Let it find an audience. People who do watch seem to really enjoy it.
Sometimes They Come Back has a really great idea! ABC should listen to them.
Better With You is the kind of smart multicam that is all-too rare these days. It would be a real shame if ABC let it go.
How does Fox cancel Breaking In with those numbers and that cast? That show won me over. Never liked Slater, but it’s their first funny show in ages!!!
breaking in numbers were steady and solid. This is clear proof fox made a huge mistake in cancelling it. Cmon execs!
There’s nothing “smart” about Better With You. It’s awful and doesn’t belong between The Middle and Modern Family. Which are smart. And good.
“Smart” may be overstating it, but since Modern Family has been coasting on its reputation it’s been fun to watch Better With You slowly improve over the course of the season.
It doesn’t belong in between Middle and MF, right. Not because of quality but because multi-camera shows don’t fit with single-camera shows, and will always get less promotion and bad reviews when they’re in those lineups (single-cams aren’t generally better written than multi-cams but they do get better reviews).
The fact that the show got cancelled and still kept up the raitings it had should be proof that it’s a strong show and should be kept.
When you hear a show got canned people usually stop watching.
I hope a better network picks up Breaking In because I really like it and Fox is just an awful network outside of sports (I hate reality tv and Fox is enamored with it too much).
Better with you definitely picked it up by midseason, once they found their stride they kept it strong so I hope it gets renewed.
Better With You rose to a 2.0 in the finals, I hope ABC could take a second look and give this show another shot.
I like Happy Endings too and I also hope this one could be given another chance
I’m with Chris, got everything crossed for a Better With You renewal. They really need to give this one a chance to build an audience. It’s one of the 3 shows me and my gf never miss.
Please ABC keep Better With You! It’s the funniest show! It can last a long time!
Please ABC, keep “Better With You!”
It is a cleverly funny show that has
made me frequently laugh out loud
the most for any show since “Friends.”
PLEASE keep it on the air!!!
