After a promising 17% week-to-week ratings increase last week, ABC’s 10 PM comedy Happy Endings dropped alarmingly last night just as the networks are getting close to making their pickup decisions for next season. The midseason series (1.7/4) was down 19% from last week despite its lead-in, Cougar Town (2.2/6), being up a tenth. The difference? Happy Endings faced original competition in the 10 PM hour vs. repeats last week. The second Happy Endings original at 10:30 PM did worse, 1.4/4. Like Cougar Town, Better With You (1.6/5) was up a tenth from last week when both series followed repeats. A new The Middle (2.0/6) was up 5% from April 20, while a fresh Modern Family (3.8/10) was flat.
Law & Order: SVU‘s first original in a month, which guest starred John Stamos, did a 2.5/6, up a tenth from April 6. The veteran NBC crime drama won the 10 PM hour against ABC’s Happy Endings and CBS’ Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (2.2/6), which was also hit by facing a new SVU, down 15% from April 16. Criminal Minds (3.2/8) was down 8%, while Survivor: Redemption Island (3.0/9) was flat with its fast national number last week. (Both Survivor and Fox’s American Idol always rise in the finals, so comparing fast nationals to finals is not completely fair.)
Speaking of Idol (6.4/18, 24.8 million), the reality series was down 7% from its fast national demo result last week, once again dominating the night in 18-49 and total viewers. Breaking In (2.5/6) was down a tenth from its fast national last week, up 4% from the final rating as it normally drops because of an Idol overrun.

Happy Endings is really funny and getting better every week! I really hope they give it a chance.
The only way Happy Endings gets picked up is if Funnybot joins the cast and kills everyone. Awkward. Awkward!
Agreed. I’m really enjoying Happy Endings.
Stamos was absolutely terrible in L&O:SVU. His character was smug but he played it so one-note. The reveal of the mothers outside the interrogation room was staged so ham-fisted it was Bruckheimer-worthy.
um… spoiler alert, Brian O.
Happy Endings is the funniest new comedy of the season. ABC really should’ve gave it a better timeslot. How do they expect a brand new show to get stellar ratings at 10PM??
Stay tuned for the Cougar Town and Breaking In crossover episode – Tappin the Grave.
LOVE Happy Endings. Look forward to it every week. Wish it came after Modern Family so I can watch my two fave ABC comedies back to back. That krav maga jazztaebo stuff was highlarious.
Breaking In is the only comedy Fox has that can even compete with the other networks. Helps that it’s a little funny too.
Breaking In is hilarious. It’s getting funnier week to week. Michael Rosenbaum’s turn as Sloth during last night’s Goonies tribute was great. Cool to see Christian Slater having fun for the first time in years. I’ll allow it.
SVU episodes with guest stars are generally the worst
was on the fence about breaking in but I saw last night’s goonies ep and loved it. im so on board. Fox has to renew it!
Happy Endings is awesome. I hope they’ll give it another season. Stick with it and hopefully ratings will improve. Give it a new timeslot or something. They should have it after Modern Family for a while.
the real story is that L&O C.I. is better then ever. Hope it gets picked up for another season PLEASE
Seems like Fox has a winning Weds night combo with American Idol and Breaking In
didn’t think it’d happen but breaking in has serious potential. Fox needs more than animation and idol. slater’s the answer!!
Never posted a comment at Deadline before, but could NOT believe anyone could describe Happy Endings as “funny”.
Hey, what’s more torturous than 30-minutes of lame comedy? How about back-to-back episodes over multiple weeks?!
The show looks like it was cast from a bunch of actors from a Community Center improv class – and Elisha Cuthbert is batting 1.000 at NEVER BEING FUNNY. “Old School” should have taught everyone that eight years ago.
It’s simply amazing to me that Seinfeld still kills in reruns with the current generation – yet Networks still insist on casting people based on looks (and lack of weight) rather than who’s funny.
Not that this weak dialog could help the most talented of actors.
Great, now I’m ranting!
I can’t believe all the love for Happy Endings. Not that I’m not liking it…I DO, a lot…but there was no love for Perfect Couples which I thought was much better. I hope Happy Endings sticks in there!
Our iPhones must be pumping out some serious cognitive dissonance waves because I can’t understand for the life of me why I think Happy Endings is so damn funny.
I mean it’s the exact same show as Perfect Couples but I would literally wipe my butt with flaming rock salt before I watched one more second of Perfect Couples.
Yeah, Cuthbert is not funny but she’s the straight man so to speak. The gay guy? Awesome, funny and not a f-ing cartoon, the crazy blonde chick? great. Crazy brunette chick? greater. Token black guy who’s not a token black guy but an actual character with a life and weirdness and nerdosity that I can actually relate to? Yes, please.
It’s just a really entertaining show all around.
Happy Endings deserves a chance. Only new comedy I like, and even though I’m not in LOVE with it I have a great time watching it. The only 20-something comedy in a long time where I recognize the characters as people who act our age. They are funny, believable friends, and not shitty people like most characters on TV. Can only get better!
So happy that Idol is dropping a bit — after america booted Casey Abrams — the last great singer on this show, except for James. They have left us with the most boring final five this show has ever had. If you are a james durbin fan you better keep voting because scotty is so far ahead of the pack despite singing the same song week after week. Oh well, this show had such great promise, but I guess that’s what you get when the people who actually do vote don’t recognize true talent like Casey and Pia.
Suspect Behavior needs cancelled.
