The suspense surrounding Michael Scott’s successor as boss on The Office boosted the season finale of the veteran NBC comedy series (3.8/10), which was up 12% from last season’s finale and ranked as the highest-rated scripted show of the night in adults 18-49. The hourlong finale of Parks and Recreation (2.2/6) was flat with last year’s season ender at 8:30 PM. (NBC aired Office reruns in the 8 PM hour.)
The penultimate results show of this season’s American Idol (6.2/19) was flat with the fast national for last week’s show (it was down 5% from the final but is expected to rebound again in the finals this afternoon.) The season finale of Bones (3.2/8) was even with last week and up 14% from the dramedy’s season finale last year. Bones edged the season finale of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy in total viewers (10 million vs. 9.6 million). Fox once again dominated the night in 18-49 and total viewers.
Grey’s Anatomy (3.4/9) was down a whopping 34% from last season, with the season finale of Private Practice (2.5/7) down 22%. Both were the series’ lowest-rated finales ever but were actually up two tenths each from last week. Wipeout (1.7/5) at 8 PM was flat.
The CBS series also posted declines vs. last year in their season finales. The Big Bang Theory (3.5/12) was down 35% from last year’s closer, but that one aired in the Monday 9:30 PM slot. Versus last week, the comedy was up a tenth. In its last regular airing on Thursday before moving to Saturday next season, Rules of Engagement (2.5/7) was down 22% from last season’s finale and flat with last week. It was the series’ lowest-rated finale, as was the the two-hour season ender of The Mentalist (2.7/7), which was down 16% from last year but even with last week’s hourlong episode.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

I had to tape the Mentalist so I could watch Bones which I’m not sure how I feel about…yet.
I loved the ending of Bones.
No spoilers here though….
“The Mentalist” finale was good. But…I thought “The Mentalist” should have made the finale a two-part episode, rather than a two-hour episode. I’m not used to sitting through two hours for one TV show.
I have to add, that I think “The Mentalist” is one of the best looking shows on TV. The production values are first rate. It looks like it is shot on motion picture film. Question: Is the “The Mentalist” shot on film, anybody know?
IMDB has the format for The Mentalist listed as Super 35mm film.
Interesting how “Bones” can generate more viewers than “Grey’s Anatomy” but the latter is still considered a bigger hit than the former because of outdated rating methodologies.
The Mentalist finale was amazing. Great production value, and very unexpected ending.
The Mentalist is shot on 35mm film.
I’ve never seen The Mentalist because it just feels so similar to everything else on CBS. I actually don’t watch anyhting on CBS except The Good Wife and Amazing Race.
But as a long time fan of Grey’s – since the first episode – last night’s season finale was REALLY WEAK. It didn’t deserve high ratings. Last years’s finale – with the shootout was one of the best season finales of ANY show, ever. But this season (with the exception of Sara Ramirez singing) has been awful.
I hate this adopted African Baby storyline – either make Meredith pregnant or don’t – but to make it all politically correct is really not connecting with the audience. And it’s not even in Meredith’s character to WANT to adopt an African Baby. It doesn’t match her set up.
I thought Sandra Oh did a nice job in last night’s episode, but making her pregnant AGAIN so she can have ANOTHER abortion – is going to make her really unlikable to those midwestern viewers.
I give last night’s episode a C- and it does not bode well for next season, which will be the last for Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey and Sandra Oh…
The Mentalist is shot on 35mm film. Thanks for noticing Joe, a lot of people work hard to make it look the way it does!
Parks and Rec was GREAT this year, the show just keeps getting better. So was The Office and so was 30 Rock (30 Rock petered out a bit there at the end but had some of its funniest episodes ever this season).
It still boggles my mind why Parks and Rec, Community, 30 Rock and even The Office get comparably low ratings to other network fare. Because so many people watch it on dvr?
When will the +10 dvr ratings (or whatever they’re called) be combined with the normal Nielsens to give an ACCURATE picture of modern ratings? Why can’t we measure what DVRs are recording?!
Oops, sorry, in the final ratings, Bones dropped below GA in both demo and total viewers.
I loved the Bones finale a lot!!!I am not normal till now
))) just can’t wait to have september!!!BEST FINALE EVER
Totally agree. The Mentalist was amazing and I did nit expect that ending at all. Simon Baker really blew my mind in the scenes facing Red. John and the explosive conclusion was mind blowing.
Season finale of bones was amazeballs. I need to watch it again!!
I am in LOVE with Bones! And cannot wait for the next season! To be nice I wont spoil anything even though I am fighting the erge! :\
I just hope that bones has a 7th season!!! I love the end of this season!!!
