MAY 09, 2011 (New York, NY) – Rob Marshall and John DeLuca have officially signed on to the Warner Bros. planned remake of THE THIN MAN. The pair will produce the film via their LUCAMAR Productions banner. Award-winning director Marshall is also confirmed to direct. The film will reteam Marshall with Johnny Depp, who is attached to star in the project. The two just worked together on PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES which Disney will be releasing on May 20.
LUCAMAR Productions joins Infinitum Nihil Company and Langley Park Pictures as production companies on the project. In addition to DeLuca and Marshall, Johnny Depp and Christi Dembrowski are producing on behalf of Infinitum Nihil, and Kevin McCormick is producing on behalf of his Langley Park Pictures. Jerry Stahl is attached as screenwriter. Says Marshall, “John and I are overjoyed at the idea of working with Johnny again, especially on such a classy and classic project. We are also thrilled to be partnering this time with such wonderful producers as Christi Dembroski and Kevin McCormick, and we are looking forward to working with Warner Bros. to create a reinvention of a beloved story.”
CAA and Michael Gendler of Gendler & Kelly negotiated the deal with Warner Bros. on behalf of Marshall and DeLuca. THE THIN MAN is a remake of the Oscar-Nominated 1934 film starring William Powell and Myrna Loy.

Well, Johnny can do anything, but the film is a classic and even takes dialog straight out of the book. Is it going to be morphed into a Mr. & Mrs. Smith type movie? I hope not.
Not sure how I feel about this. the “Thin Man” movies are great. Not sure Johnny Depp and any unnamed actress can match William Powell and Myrna Loy.
I’m with you on this one, basically torn between my love of the classic and also curiosity, because I certainly think Johnny Depp can do it. But it has to stay true to at least the spirit of the original, and that, for me, means no guns, drugs, car chases, explosions. Oh, what am I saying?! Of course they’ll screw this one up! In the meantime, who’s going to play Asta?
And here’s the proof: “…to create a reinvention of a beloved story.” Yep, it’s dead.
Indeed
“The Thin Man” was originally a novel by “Maltese Falcon” author Dashiell Hammett
Maybe someday the tide will turn and people will admit how mediocre Depp really is…perhaps a comparison with William Powell will start it.
I like the idea of a new Thin Man movie, if done right… but doing it right will be a huge challenge. I’m kind of uncomfortable with the fact that their initial element is just a male star. I’d feel better if they were beginning with an actor and actress cast–preferably a couple with proven chemistry. The Thing Man films are two-handers, through and through, and I’d hate to see it turn out as just a Johnny Depp movie–with some actress.
This was a terrible idea from the beginning, continues to be a terrible idea and I don’t see it being anything other than an abomination of a classic film and a classic pair of actors that isn’t often seen and I don’t think we really have today. And Johnny Depp is certainly NOT one-half of whatever pair they might dream up, but whatevs….
I love Johnny Depp (his Hunter Thompson and Keith Richards Sparrow were inspired and he managed to make us forget his 21 Jump Street start and attempts to be in a relevant band). But the hallmark of the Thin Man is the rapid fire banter.
Having just slogged through The Tourist (which was an attempt at witty banter), this just might be his weak spot.
Then again, everyone was god-awful in The Tourist. So it may be a one-off. And I think Rob Marshall is a great choreographer, but weeeeak with story/ acting (Memoirs of a Geisha, anyone?).
I always heard Tina Fey and Steve Carrell wanted to do a Thin Man type thing – that seems more of a fit.
Regardless of your personal problem with drop, he’s a great actor.
Do original idea and Johnny Depp just not go together as his upcoming projects all seem to be re-makes of something else
At least with Rob Marshall directing and Johnny Depp…the production will look great.
I agree with the other comments that The Thin Man is a two person story and the Myrna Loy role is as important as William Powell’s along with a solid cast of character actors.
So, the script and the actors bringing it to life must have great wit, chemistry, sophistication, intelligence and charm with little or no support from visual effects, special effects and so forth.
The Thin Man is action of the mind…not action for the sake of it.
I’ve never seen the old movies, but sort of remember the tv series, in the late 50′s, I think. I’m looking forward to this one. I’m sure most of the movie goers today haven’t seen the original film (were there more than one?) from the 30′s or 40′s. That should give most people the chance to see this with fresh eyes, not just constantly comparing it to the original.
Most people haven’t seen Citizen Kane either. Should Hollywood remake that one too?
This movie will suck. Bet on it.
If you saw Up In The Air you know that George Clooney and Vera Farmiga should be doing this.
Rachel Weisz as Nora
What’s next- Taylor Swift as Dorothy in a new “Wizard of Oz”? Scarlett Johansen in “Gone With The Wind”? Some movies were perfect the first time and don’t need new interpretations of their source material. And this one just would never work. Nick Charles is charming, but he’s a functional alcoholic, and the failure of the remake of “Arthur” showed how well charming drunks go over today.
No the failure of the remake of “Arthur” showed how unappealing Russell Brand is as a lead, and the resistance to the needless remake of a treasured classic.
Good point.
There had better be a lot of DRINKING and SMOKING in this movie or its going to be a joke. What? They solve the caper SOBER???
The original was made in a different time and should stay there. Love the original, not excited for this remake.
However, Clooney and Farmiga would be good choices. I agree.
Should we assume this will be set in the modern day?
Hugh Jackman and Debra Messing. Debra is the only choice, especially since she looks like Myrna Loy. And for costumes the designers should be Tom Ford for Nick and Carolina Herrera for Nora. And having this movie filmed in San Francisco would be great.
