EXCLUSIVE: Diane Henriques’ non-fiction book recounting of the life and lies of imprisoned swindler Bernie Madoff debuts at No. 10 on The New York Times bestseller list this weekend. The Wizard Of Lies: Bernie Madoff And The Death Of Trust, published on April 26, has been optioned by HBO for a movie, and right now sources tell me that the pay channel is negotiating with Robert De Niro to play Madoff. There’s no doubt that the two men definitely look alike. The book is said to be the definitive look at Madoff and his $65 billion Ponzi scheme. Meanwhile, De Niro has personal experience with being bilked: in 2009, Lawrence Salander, a prominent art gallery owner, was charged with bilking a slew of high-profile clients, including De Niro, out of $88 million on high-priced art deals over more than 15 years.

De Niro would do a wonderful job in this HBO project!
At last a meaty role De Niro can wrap his mitts around!
Just send Bobby to Graydon Carter’s hairdresser on fire and he’s good to go.
Who’s playing the Mrs?
CAA has really been killing it for this guy. TV movie baby!!
DeNiro as Madoff? Heh heh. This should be good. Very good casting.
Wow, the Madoff story told as a comedy? That’s forward thinking, HBO. Should be a hoot. Wait, it is going to be a comedy, isn’t? It isn’t? But then why cast a clown actor?
go watch “Raging Bull”
Can Len Amato only invest himself in ripped from the headlines subjects with aging movie stars attached? Between this an his Al Pacino man crush (first Jack Kevorkian – yawn – and now Phil Spector) you can practicaly predict what’s coming over there. Too Big To Fail is next. These movies don’t go wide or terribly deep. A Special Relationship? What was that actually about? Did it have a point? Even Game Change isn’t going to tell the audience anything new although Julianne Moore will be more fun to watch than Al Pacino.
Cinema Verite was a rare moment of inspired storytelling. Temple Grandin was remarkable. But those movies shed light, something the rest of the HBO films slate seems scared to do.
I agree completely. What gives with this regime? Their short term memories are very short.
Considering the scope of his crimes, it is really inappropriate that Madoff be portrayed by an actor of the stature and caliber of Robert De Niro. It is practically flattering to Madoff. I suggest Gilbert Gottfried.
On some level I agree. The only place for this project is HBO or another pay cabler because what American would shell up $10-15 for a movie ticket to watch Madoff swindle his hard-working clients. He’s a flawed character for sure – but is there any sympathy? Wonder what De Niro sees in this role and why he’s so stoked…
Ah, come on. Don’t be mean to Mr. De Sellout. He couldn’t play Travis Bickle all his life.
DeNiro should stick with movies…not biopics on premium cable. There’s something sacrilegious about it.
Proceeds of the movie should go to the Madoff victims, period.
Not a look alike. Jerry Adler (played Hesh in The Sopranos) would be a better choice IMO.
Hesh – good call…! I thought Danny Aiello would be better than DeNiro too.
Seriously HBO just seriously! What is your obssesion with italian mob bosses on your screens? From soprano to DeNiro. Look i’m yet to break into TV but listen to me. When I look at Bennie Madorf’s charactor my first cast mind frame looks at Deadwood’s Al Swearengen or the mayor of deadwood Cy Toliver. This money swindling was a white color job not blue color crime. so no mob mentality it is all wall street meet main street middle class who wanted to be pampered and got decieved like expected in a western philosophy on money and power.
What movie career? Whens the last time aging DeNiro had a box office hit?
Hes 68-not many his age can dominate the cinemas!
This would be a great role for DeNiro, Can’t wait to see it!
Who will play Fred Wilpon?? lol
David Strathairn would be a bette actor for the film
when does this come out
