One thing missing so far from the upcoming film Woody Allen will shoot in Italy has been … Italian actors. Allen has so far set Jesse Eisenberg, Penelope Cruz, Ellen Page and Alec Baldwin. I’m hearing that Allen will land iconic Italian director/actor Roberto Benigni to join the ensemble cast. For the most part, Benigni hasn’t been seen in these parts since he was climbing over seated superstars to accept the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film and then later bounding up and saying he wanted to make love to everyone after he was named Best Actor in the 1997 film Life is Beautiful. The last dull Oscarcast could certainly have used him. I believe he’ll be announced as part of Allen’s The Wrong Picture cast at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, where Allen premieres his latest film, Midnight in Paris.

Adore Benigni! Johnny Stecchino is one of the funniest films EVER.
Totally agree. Love to see Roberto Benigni and Chinese comedian You Ge on screen.
This brings up yet another problem with the Oscars — spontaneity and exhurberance are hardly encouraged. Benigni reactions to his wins were a breath of fresh air. Based on the response by those in the audience that night, it seems they agree.
NOOOOOOOOOOO! He is a terrible actor (Pinoccio, the Monster, Son of the Pink Panther) and I was hoping to never have to see him again. This may be the first Woody Allen film I have ever missed.
I think you think Benigni is a terrible actor just because you can’t understand all the implicite meanings in his movies, the multiple “shades” that stay behind what he says, and firts of all, you can’t understand completely the irony and his sense of humor. Because he talks in a strong accent from Tuscany that sounds funny only to italian people, because he makes jokes that are funny only for italian people. But i can assure that he is one of the most brilliant, intelligent and good actor and director in Italy.
Pinochio was awful, but ‘the Monster’ ruled. Very funny film.
Benigni is supposed to be the most staunch anti-Berlusconi artist in Italy. Now he’s making a movie produced by Silvio Berlusconi’s company, accepting dirt pay, for what? To line the pockets of the already rich Berlusconi and Allen?
