Law & Order veteran Sam Waterston has booked his first post-L&O series regular role: a supporting part in the Aaron Sorkin’s drama pilot for HBO tentatively titled More As This Story Develops. The project centers on cable news anchor Will McCallister (Jeff Daniels), who has his own show, as well as the show’s female executive producer and staff. Emily Mortimer is yet to close her deal for the female lead of the executive producer, MacKenzie. Waterston will play Charles Skinner, the president of the cable news division and Will’s immediate superior who hired MacKenzie behind Will’s back. In addition to Daniels, Waterston joins recently cast Olivia Munn and Alison Pill.

I don’t know about this one. Sounds a lot like SportsNight, which I thought was vastly overrated, and very full of itself.
I am so glad there’s someone else out there who thinks that about Sports Night. Never understood what made this series so great.
Yeah, it was the banter. Much like, “Dawson’s Creek”, the banter restored the relationship with my ‘remote’. Same with, “The West Wing”; the banter is front and center and if you can’t get past that it doesn’t matter how good anything else is if all you want to do is throw something at the TV screen.
I am SO glad I’ll be seeing Sam Waterston back on TV. He is a great actor and a good guy and one of the main reasons I was disappointed when L & O was cancelled. He and Sorkin’s wit will blend well. I loved Sports Night.
Nice. I thought Sam had retired after Law and Order. Good to see him doing other things, but truth be told, its going to be difficult to imagine him as any other character than Jack McCoy.
You might want to try watching him as Hamlet or (upcoming) King Lear. Waterson had–and continues to have–a long-time career in the theater.
Or insurance commercials for seniors
Good for Sam but they still don’t have a main female lead. Emily Mortimer has two projects one that shes currently filming and another that she’ll do sometimes this summer. So either they will wait until she’s finished or find another actress. I really wish this project would finish casting already.
I think this makes it official – I’m the last person with a SAG card who is NOT in this pilot. Damn, accidentally take one of Aaron Spelling’s 10 parking spots at 20th just ONCE 25 years ago and… Damn, that guy really knew how to make a blackball STICK.
Where are they going to shoot this Pilot?
New York I would assume.
Oh, good, a behind-the-scenes-in-a-TV-newsroom concept. I’ve never seen one of these before. I wonder how Aaron Sorkin will tackle this fresh and unfamiliar territory. I hope there will be some uptempo banter for a change.
