UPDATE: I hear ABC Studios, which co-produced the pilot for Ringer with CBS Studios, is pulling out, citing that it cannot produce a series for the economics of the CW. This is ironic, as CW’s new president Mark Pedowitz is the former head of ABC Studios. Under him, ABC Studios produced the CW series Reaper.
PREVIOUS: Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning to primetime as her CBS pilot Ringer is being picked up to series. But in a surprising twist, the series is going NOT to CBS but to its sibling CW. With its serialized nature and young skew, Ringer is probably better suited for the CW. It brings back Gellar to the network that replaced the WB and UPN, the two weblets that aired her breakout series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It also gives CW a major star that has huge following in the network’s 18-34 demographic. The acquisition marks a pretty inventive first programming move by new CW president Mark Pedowitz, who was brought in to shake things up at the network. CW is now working with the producers to make the economics of the transition work. CW has explored taking over CBS projects before, including pilot Ultra and series Moonlight though neither of those happened.
Ringer, from ABC Studios and CBS TV Studios, centers on Bridget (Gellar), a troubled young woman on the run from the mob who hides out by inhabiting the life of her wealthy twin sister, Siobhan, until she learns that her twin’s life has a bounty on it as well. Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder wrote the pilot, which Richard Shepard directed. With the pickup of Ringer and the imminent order for Secret Circle, it is unclear if the chances of the other frontrunner, Hart of Dixie, are affected. Of the bubble shows, Nikita and One Tree Hill are expected to return; Hellcats is less certain though still in contention.

WOAH!!!!!!!!!!!! I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING!!!!!!!!
which show is this going to bump??
That’s pretty gross. The CW is filth. Sarah Michelle deserves better. I kind of hope she walks out on the project now.
Weird. Don’t know how I feel about this. Would be interested to hear how she really feels about it, though…
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best news of the entire day. The show probably suits the CW much better and on that network is guaranteed a minimum of 23 seasons because they keep everything on air.
everything but REAPER. SCREW CW!!!!
touche. However, Reaper was only good the first season. they ruined it after that.
Or Veronica Mars !
only way they could save the show. i heard the pilot was not very good. drop it off at the CW door! lol>
WHAT!?!? Wow. SHOCKING!! This would have NEVER flied with Dawn running the CW
Flown.
Thanks for that.
I’M SCARED! This could end really well or really really badly. But I could see them pairing it up with Nikita tbh.
OMG this is great news! CW is actually a better fit!
that’s a game changer for C’dub– talk about shake-up
Holy Shit! I did NOT see that one coming either! And that officially seals the Dawn Stroff’s days. Quality programing, here we go, CW!
Definitely a surprise, but I think it’s a good decision.
This is better for the show’s success chances
Glad to see the comeback of SMG
CW was going downhill anyway. Maybe the buzz from this show can spark it back to life. Buffy fans might actually like this.
Interesting. The CW has really needed to expand its programming, so if this is a sign that they’re moving beyond rich teenager dramas, good for them. And they’ll certainly give the show time to find its feet. But still, it’s kind of a downgrade to have a name like SMG on a network where they’ll be lucky to get 2.5 million viewers.
Nice! Welcome back to TV Sarah Michelle Gellar! We missed you. I’m interested to see what this show is like now that The CW has picked it up.
Can you trust a post that claims exclusive but doesn’t bother to get the show title right in the headline? Not “The Ringer” just “Ringer” but if true, crazy.
welcome home baby
Wow! Script was so fantastic, and yet NOT a CBS show. Thank god CBS realized it was good enough to put on a network that could actually give it life and an actual chance. Huzzah, CBS, Huz-zah!
Totally agree. Was best script i read this year. not pretentious just an exciting page turner. When i heard they got the guy from Fantastic Four (Ioan Gruffith) I thought this is perfect. And he makes a perfect couple with Sarah Michelle Geller – they look great together! But I always worried CBS would pick it up because of Sarah but then drop it after two weeks and then we would never see it again. Now maybe it has a chance.
The premise is nearly identical to the ABC Family series “The Lying Game” – which is also premiering earlier in August.
This should be interesting.
Sarah fans just won The Lotto with this one.
CBS makes cop procedurals shows for old people, This show would had been canceled , same as Jericho and Moonlight.
Happy to read this.
So it got pick up ?????? By CBS or CW ???
While I’m not sold on the premise of the show I am sold on SMG and I’ll definitely give it a shot.
I’m not keen with it being on the CW since it’s ratings are almost non-existent…but I am keen on it being on CW for their overall support of great shows without great ratings (ie The Vampire Diaries, Nikita) plus SMG made her name on a small network so her loyal fans will find her and maybe even give the CW a healthy boost in ratings overall.
cbs owns the cw so it’s no surprise that they dumped it there. supposedly cbs liked smg but not the pilot. stick it some place where her name has some pull and hope for the best. Dawn Ostroff was/is a COMPLETE moron. Anyone know what company she’s off to destroy now?
