Thank you, Los Angeles Times… Now those are 5 words I never thought my fingers would type. And yet the paper’s Patrick Goldstein just wrote some very nice praise for Deadline in — of all places — Sunday Calendar.
“Finke has been joined by a group of talented reporters from old-line trade publications like Variety and the Hollywood Reporter, including Mike Fleming and Nellie Andreeva, and Deadline has morphed into the industry’s must-read digital bulletin board… For decades, Variety ruled the showbiz roost, using its own form of leverage to score scoops until Finke came along to upset the apple cart. She out-traded the trades and turned a tenuous operation into a serious business.”
As for what Goldstein writes about my own reporting, it’s nonsense. As I told him, “One minute I read how I’m bullying everyone and the next minute you claim I’m going soft. I’ll never make you people happy. I’m still me. I haven’t changed at all. Everyone knows I’m an equal opportunity [offender.]” Actually, the word I used was “bitchslapper”. And that’s why I started Deadline: to inject some full-contact honesty into showbiz coverage. I’m going to keep doing exactly that.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

And that’s why we love ya, Nik!
Congratulations. Well deserved praise.
(But aren’t “Thank you, Los Angeles Times” five words?)
I LOVE this site and visit it multiple times a day. And I like anyone who can splash a bit of reality into the faces of these people who really don’t deal in reality at all.
And I just Blued myself (Oh, Tobias)
My issue with Nikki injecting honesty, is that it isn’t true honesty, but her opinion and what she considers the way things should be.
There is a huge difference between the two.
i second that. and she is not “equal opportunity” or even-handed. She likes tearing down powerful men. You will never see this site go after the powerful women of this town. Somehow Donna Langley, Amy Pascal, Elizabeth Gabler, Beth Swofford, Emma Watts, Angela Pope, Anne Sweeney etc never get taken to task for all their failures and bad behavior. Only the men do.
True. But this is HER blog, she can say what she wants. And that’s why I like reading it — the THR and Variety articles are just bland.
I don’t always agree with her, but she makes a damn good living with this blog. And it has personality. Can’t say the same for every other entertainment-related blog.
Nikki Finke is the first Sheriff this rotten, stinking place has ever had. She tells the truth. She calls out the liars, the sociopaths and the execs who abuse their power and reveals who they are. Her desire for truth is equal to their desire to cover up their truth. They would have run her over with a car if they could only find her. Instead Rabinov hires Kelly Bush.
In a town that has allowed a small circle to thrive under the cover of sound bites, fancy PR flacks and glossy press releases she has ripped away their expensive facade and called a spade a spade. How could the town not flock to her column? They’re so starved for the truth.
Nikki is a sensation and deserves to be so.
exactly. after flicking through that sad excuse for a news paper ‘variety’ with it’s hero worshipping and shameless ads all fawning over that bullshit artist ryan kavanaugh, i realised exactly why no-one reads variety anymore unless they want to read their own press release or puff piece.
Of course this site is not “pure honesty”, but the opinion of Nikki and a few others. That is what makes the site stand out. It is an OPINION/News site. Similar to FoxNews or MsNBC…and that is not necessarily a bad thing. We have the basic cut and dry news in THR and Variety, and frankly they have been trying hard to find a way to draw up interest in the way Deadline has, much as how CNN, the former news leader, now finds itself falling behind the aforementioned opinion channels.
So if you want basic news thats fine, but there really is no reason to hate on someone that was ahead of the curve in catering to those who want to read opinions and feel connected on a more personal level.
I read that and Smiled BIG TIME..and thought..you earned it
mazel tov…Ester
And thank you for that “full-contact honesty.”
so if nikki is an equal opportunity bitch slapper, who does nikki LOVE in Hollywood?
Any female. She has never gone after one no matter what thwy have done.
Opinion is fine. Just dont sell it as news when you wont report the news unless it is news you want to report.
There hasnt ben a more biased news media ever than this place. At least all those old paper rgs reported something when it was big enough, but nope not nikki. Doesnt fill her genda.
Sharon Waxman. Nikki LOVES Sharon Waxman.
She loves us…the readers!
Deserved. Too many hypocrites in this world and finding an individual of integrity takes seemingly forever.
I started readline Deadline during the Writer’s Strike, haven’t stopped.
congratulations nikki! u r a true bad ass!
thank u for that!
You flawless bitch! <3
And you’re doing it quite well…
That’s the main reason I read Deadline – it’s not the usual recycled pablum that most of the trades pump out, bending down to blow whomever is in power at the moment; you tell it how it is, a rare commodity in Hollywood. Keep up the good work.
What is Variety? Congrats! Hope the business model works.
Congrats Nikki!!!!
We all knew you owned Warner Bros. but when is it coming out that you own WME as well?
Nikki – Hollywood needs you and your honesty and your straight-shooting “calling ‘em as you see ‘em.” You’ve worked hard and you deserve the recognition…and Thank you, L.A. Times for noting one of THE best entertainment BUSINESS journalist this Industry has seen.
Thanks for everything Nikki. Do what you can to keep the spotlight on SAG-AFTRA as the leadership throws the rank & file under the bus, with lies, distortion, and collusion. If you continue to put out good information, perhaps the message will one day reach the membership.
While there is nothing worse than wading through pathetic Nikki sycophants on this thread (and others) hoping to get your blessing, yes, you have gone soft. In the past you would never have given the Times praise, just ridicule.
No doubt Penske Jr. can’t monetize your impressive traffic if you crap all over everyone just because you feel like it or they deserve it.
Regardless, you have a good product. Now, how about some props to Nellie Andreeva, whose broken some good stories recently, or is it only all about you?
Wow that IS nice to hear from the LA Times and Goldstein – a little LATE but whatev, isn’t the Times always late w/ industry reporting anyway – snap. But a compliment’s a compliment – and that’s a nice one from the old dinosaur……. and the Times too.
are you making money from this website? You are the only website that i check regularly, probably the first one i check when i wake up in the morning.
is she making money from this site? you’ve got to be kidding right, this was a sarcastic comment right?
she sold it for a bloody fortune!
bitch slapping is big business baby!
I love how Nikki and Deadline has turned Industry reporting its ears and keeping studio executives and more than a few entertainment journalists trembling. However, here’s a few issues that ought to be addressed in Hollywood: There are too many Jews, not enough women executives, too much pay in the hands of a few, assistants are being used and verbally abused, HR is just a mouthpiece for the studios, ageism is rampant and there aren’t enough Asians on film and television. How’s that for honesty!
The only time something Asian touched one of my movies is when my assistant accidentally spilled soy sauce on a draft of the script.
He is joking! Don’t believe anything you read.
I’m happy for you. I like your site. At times, I do think you can be callous. I do think you have a tendency to cherry-pick failures to broadcast for vendetta. The people trying to make a living in this industry are far from perfect, like anyone else, but I don’t think because they have celebrity they should be lambasted in print. If anything, knowing the industry, I would think you’d be more empathetic to the struggles of all individuals trying to work in entertainment. I will continue to come to the site, for the news. Not the opinion.
Congrats on all of the love, Nikki.
Much deserved. You are a bona fide Hollywood balls-buster, and the industry will (thankfully) never be the same. Keep it up.
I understand why you posted this but I think you’re above it. Leave the TOLDJA’s and stuff to the rags. You’re part of the new age. Live it!
We wouldn’t have it any other way, Nikki. Thanks for KEEPING IT REAL!
