Tina Fey returned as host of Saturday Night Live tonight and brought back her trademark impersonation of Sarah Palin in a Republican 2012 Undeclared Candidates Debate skit. (Fox News, where Palin works as a contributor, carried the first GOP presidential candidates debate this past week.) “It’s just so great to be back on Fox News, a network that both pays me and shows me the questions ahead of time,” Fey’s Palin said. “I just hope tonight that the lamestream media won’t twist my words by repeating them verbatim.” And another zinger: “I want to acknowledge that this week we finally vanquished one of the world’s great villains – and I for one am thrilled to say good riddance to Katie Couric.” Is it just me, or does Fey, former SNL head writer, always elevate the writing on the show when she hosts? Also returning for the skit was alum Darrell Hammond, dusting off his spot-on Donald Trump impersonation:
As for Osama bin Laden, he was everywhere, including an ”Under the Sea” tableau interrupted when bin Laden’s body is dropped into the sea. Fred Armisen read a last will as bin Laden. But Seth Meyers got off the most memorable line of the night during Weekend Update: ”Barack Obama will go down in history as the first black person ever to have to prove that he killed someone”:
Meanwhile, the mash-up of Andy Samberg’s rap group with Michael Bolton in Pirates of the Caribbean and other movies rocked:
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Saul Alinsky wrote that you should ridicule your strongest oppoenets to diminish them…hm Tina Fey reprises Sarah Palin..trying to make sure the ridicule sticks seems a bit desperate
How is Sarah Palin an “opponent” of Tina Fey? Is she a rival actress or writer or something?
Please, the right wing’s attempt to turn Saul Alinsky into some boogeyman is laughable at best and just plain sad at worst.
Because neither Tina nor SNL can rise up to Palin’s level, both try to diminish her down to theirs. I say “try” because neither has the skill to do so – which makes for some really tedious viewing.
SNL and Fey? I can see your non-talent from my porch!
Palin’s Level? Sitting on her butt for two years before not finishing the job and quitting just to get Fox “News’ money?
Definitely just you… Everything about this show was awful – even the live audience was silent through most of it.
I thought so too, most of the show fell flat. The only thing that made me laugh was the Tina Fey stuff as Palin and the comment that Palin was ‘Taking a Rosetta Stone course…. in English”.
It’s not just you. Everyone who works in entertainment can’t get enough of her. Personally, I don’t get it. The show was god awful. The show has been god awful for a long time. The bar is so low for SNL, Tina Fey is considered a brilliant head writer. 30 Rock sucks on big ones as well. But they’re successful right? So how can I criticize it? Maybe the cool kids aren’t watching? Maybe they tuned out the day the Internet was invented and the ones left watching this shit are old and out of touch. Marie Calendars is successful too. Maybe people turn this on out of habit rather than it’s own merits? Like fucking a spouse out of habit rather than passion. I wonder if Michael O’Donoghue were a cuter girl, he’d have been a more successful writer? Maybe the cast could try a little harder to memorize their dumb-ass lines instead of reading their dumb-ass lines on the air? Cool things get old and become institutions. But like all things baby-boomer, the less cool they get, the richer they get. The Jagger Principle.
Maybe I need to chill out and go to sleep?
yes, you need to chill out. SNL’s writing tends to be hit and miss (mostly miss) but you lost me at “30 Rock sucks.”
30 Rock is successful b/c, as hard as it is to believe sometimes, there are still a few smart people watching TV. It can’t all be mindless reality drivel.
That OBM last will skit was so lame, that by the end even the audience seemed bored.
By no stretch of the imagination does tawdry, tacky Tina Fey resemble gorgeous, gracious Gov. Sarah Palin. SNL is mainstream mush.
“Gracious?” That’s probably the funniest word ever used to describe Sarah Palin.
gorgeous and gracious? you’re being sarcastic, right?
Since that song is about to be released on Lonely Island’s album on Tuesday, I’m guessing Tina Fey had nothing to do with it.
Yes – who here really thinks Andy Samberg and his “couple of non-funny loser friends” have any talent whatsoever other than lucking out five, six, seven years ago shitting out some sketch about cupcakes that for some unknown reason captured the imagination of millions on an otherwise slow news day? That’s right – nobody! He needs to star in another of Lorne’s feature comedies and get quickly relegated to the trash-heap of mediocrity, otherwise know as “Nealonland”!
Somehow everyone in the college demo thinks Andy Samberg is funny. A few of my friends think “Hot Rod” is hilarious. And I wish I was kidding.
The only things I liked last night were the Republican sketch (why wasn’t that the cold open?) and Seth Meyers’ line that you highlighted above. I thought the rest of the show, particularly in comparison to Tina Fey’s appearances last year in the Betty White episode and the one with justin Bieber, were much stronger. This season feels like it’s gone way downhill, really quickly.
This just isn’t funny. It has potential to be funny, but then it sells that out with an easy to see joke that even a child could write. It’s hard to compare this GOP undeclared candidates sketch to the classic and legendary ’91 Democratic sketch, in which each of the candidates works hard to convince the public not to nominate him.
Tina Fey is an uptick, but the show is just bad right now, and thanks to Netflix, we can compare it to earlier seasons and see that this isn’t an illusion.
I was going to say 2nd funniest after “gorgeous”. Talk about setting a low bar.
I still don’t understand why you report on SNL skits. Its beneath you. The show is and has been irrelevant for decades. Nellie – you tv reporting on pilots and tv business is great. Don’t do SNL reporting anymore. Its demeaning.
Yawn. Sarah Palin isn’t even running in 2012 so I’m confused as to why they keep attacking/mocking the woman 24/7 when there’s a guy sitting in the White House right now who’s ripe for a comic ripping but of course he’s untouchable. I’d put it down to SNL being run by a bunch of liberals but then they actually use to make fun of Bill Clinton when he was president so I guess it’s simply because Obama is half black that they’re not daring to make a joke at his expense. No wonder the only people who watch SNL are those who appear on it.
Nellie, I’m totally with you on this. SNL is best DVR’d because there’s always a fair amount of junk in there, but this season the good stuff has been really, really good.
In my opinion, a lot of the best stuff has been commentary on comedy itself – like the kings of catchphrases short – as well as some of the characters being honed on weekend update, like stefon and pretty much everything fred armisen does.
As a comedy writer, I think SNL is doing really interesting things and the people who don’t like it mostly don’t get it.
Seems to me that the only time Fey gets press is when she does her Palin bit.
I really wish SNL would let the audience know when their “funny” writers are going on a vacation. That’s 90 minutes of my life I won’t get back. As far as “not getting it” with regard to the show’s humor–I get it, but the joke’s are so unfunny and they suck–big time.
The French pregnant delivery scene was funny!
All that damn hair and then the 69.
Not only was this show one of the worst ever, but Thursday night’s finale of “30 Rock” was just as bad. When did silly and sophomoric become the standard? So Bin Laden’s body ends up in the bottom of the ocean. One joke skit. Lasted about 3 seconds and they dragged it out for 5 minutes. This whole show could have been written Saturday morning. Hey guys, put some Effort into it.
The lame, liberal conformists of SNL(and NBC) are so far up Obama’s butt it’s embarrassing to watch. Lenny Bruce must be spinning in his grave. No real fan of Palin, but poor Tina Fey has gone to the Sarah Palin well once (make that five times)too often. Like Will Farrell’s “W” and Dana Carvey’s Church Lady, these skits are just old, tired and so – yesterday. Maybe it’s time they bury SNL at sea as well.
Tina Fey is very funny but without her it is the same lame SNL. The skits are tired and the show is just awful. They beat characters to death. They are not funny. Kristen Wiig is so over hyped, Seth Meyers thinks he is funny and witty but isn’t and Keenan is just plain boring. Time for some new blood.
One funny skit, another sad S.N.L THIS SHOW NEEDS TO TAKE IT’S OWN LIFE !!!
Uhhh, none of the people in this Fox News spoof have announced they were running, in addition to the fact that none of them were even at the debate. Tina Fey’s impression isn’t as good as I remember it being. Accent was on way too thick.
Why not try making fun of the guy currently in the White House? Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2 spoofs all worked great. Give it a try!
I see someone didn’t watch the Skit.
“Uhhh, none of the people in this Fox News spoof have announced they were running, in addition to the fact that none of them were even at the debate.”
Watch it again Mr. Smarty Pants and you MAY see the humor in why these people were chosen…
“Tina Fey”, answer to trivia question in 20 years. “Who was one of the most overrated and least funny women on Saturday Night Live?”. Second question “what was Saturday Night Live?”.
amen.
Michael Bolton as Tony Montana? F*cking hilarious, made up for the predictable Palin/Trump stuff.
How long is Tina Fey going to trot out her one-trick-pony? OK, she looks like Sarah Palin, big f’ing deal. She is not funny, never was, and pretty much owes her longevity to Palin. Yawn, hand me the remote.
Its funny how all these people are on here talking about how bad the show is yet they all watched it! Its simple, if you don’t like SNL don’t watch the show. Producers, writers and actors will never try to make it better if ratings are good. I don’t understand why more people don’t get this concept.Don’t watch bad TV!
You nailed it. You’ll never, ever, catch SNL making fun of Obama. You’ll never see Fred Armistad pretending to be him. Why? We all know. It’s because they’re all LlBS and this is their conspiracy.
The reason why SNL makes fun of Palin and conservatives is that CONSERVATIVES DESERVED TO BE LAUGHED AT
And Armisen HAS INDEED played Obama on several occasions. But our president doesn’t do or say anything stupid to be made fun of…unlike his opponents on the Right.
