With the Bones pickup out of the way, attention focuses on the other Fox drama embroiled in a renewal drama, House. After a string of deadlines came and went, including one last Friday and another one this Monday, there is still no deal but I hear the hope is to wrap the renewal up by early next week when Fox brass will start piecing together the network’s schedule for next season. It won’t be an easy task as Fox and House producer Universal Media Studios are still apart on the license fee by about 20%. That’s by how much I hear Fox wants to cut the series’ current license fee to about $5 million per episode next season. At this point in a series’ run (House will be entering its 8th season in the fall), the network license fee normally covers the cost of production. But I hear UMS cannot produce House in its current form for $5 million an episode, so it has been unwilling to accept a reduced license fee as it faces the possibility to have to deficit finance a show in its eighth season, something studios rarely do. But then, House is not a typical show as it is estimated to gross some $1 billion for its run from Fox license fees, off-network syndication and international sales as well as auxiliary markets. The network is not budging either, and it got fresh ammunition this week when House hit a new season low with a 2.9/8 in adults 18-49. “Both sides have drawn hard lines and are sticking to them,” one person close to the situation said. “Middle ground is incredibly small, it is a very tiny dot.”
To help bridge the gap, UMS has been crunching numbers as it tries to reduce the budget of the show for next season so it gets closer to the $5 million per-episode license fee offered by Fox. The focus has been on cutting above-the-line costs, including cast compensation. The studio is negotiating with House co-stars Robert Sean Leonard, Omar Epps and Lisa Edelstein, whose deals are up at the end of this season. I hear all three, who are at about $175,000 an episode, have been asked to agree to both doing fewer episodes next season (from 24 to 18 is a scenario I hear) and getting a salary reduction. Such double cut is very rare, especially on a successful show like House. I hear the studio had been playing hardball, even threatening to drop Epps or Edelstein. But I also hear that Leonard, Epps and Edelstein all want to return to the show for what is perceived to be its final season and a compromise is expected to be reached, possibly by the end of the week. (House star Hugh Lauri has one more season on his 3-year deal that pays him north of $400,000 an episode, and newer cast members like Olivia Wilde already locked in too). I also hear that there is an offer on the table for House creator/executive producer/showrunner David Shore, whose contract is also up at the end of the season, but negotiations are not expected to begin until after the deals with the actors are made. Meanwhile, fellow exec producer Katie Jacobs, who has been key in shepherding the show, is locked, as are all senior writers with the exception of Shore. And to make things even more intriguing, UMS has the House-esqe medical drama pilot Weekends at Bellevue in serious contention at Fox as a potential companion to House.

What a mess…
A reduced number of episodes and a pay cut, i would band together and not agree to that, that’s insulting — HOUSE GO TO NBC or another network, i’m sure another network would kill to have this show so that House can revive their network.
agree, I don’t understand why they have to agree with a cut of their salary, the show is great and have always a lot of viewers and fans around the world
Greed, greed, greed… when will it end.
Hope they work it out
it’s a good show. Once it was a great show. I still watch but apparently one of few who still does. Not sure it’s fair to treat cast like this on last season as it needs them all, but if the ratings aren’t there? Then again, I do wonder what’s the net on the 1 billion $ gross?
Having worked in this town for many years, I can tell you with certainty that the net on the 1 billlon $ gross is just north of $131.16.
It looks like all the showrunners are gonna have to take their kids out of Crossroads next fall. Hope Pali & Beverly Hills High has room. Oh the pain…oh the shame of going to a public school on the Westside. I bet I’ll be able to get a really good deal on a Range Rover right now. All the show runners will then brag to their friends about going green and how they “just love” their new Prius. Downsizing has finally come to Beverly Hills & North of Montana!!
ATM,
I don’t know who you are referring to… none of the show runners drive in with Range Rovers… although they don’t come in with prius-es either.
Why would the cast renegotiate down?? Weak move for members of such a hit show. Reflects poorly on EVERYONE involved.
Maybe they enjoy producing the show!
The world will become just another boring place with absence of Greed
Wow, this is some BS. Can’t believe they’d do that to RSL, LE and OP. And I thought OW didn’t have a contract yet either; did they negotiate with her before the other three? Seems kinda shady, I’d rather see the original cast in every ep of the final season than that replacement fellow.
Wouldn’t Fox blink in this situation. They have NOTHING else approaching a hit in the 1 hour format. It’s a graveyard.
“The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind.”
Show’s on it’s last legs. Pay the $$$ for the final season, let Fox give it a big send-off and recoup part of the deficit in finale ad rates. Everyone wins…
Got to say I agree. I came late to House and watched every episode within a month a last year. Show started going downhill after the start of Season 6 (and Season 5 wasn’t consistently great either). Even being a Huddy fan I’m still not totally excited about this Season. First half of the season was pretty forgettable. Started getting better the second half. Give it one more season and let it rest. Pushing it to go further is a. a waste of money and b. sad for the show, it peaked Season 4 and hit a low in Season 6 by ending it next year it should be able to go out with dignity.
Mess indeed, this is still a show that brings in billions for the networks. Greed is right, and what an insult to the hard working cast and crew that has made this show such a hit around the world. This will most likly be its last season, let it go out with diginity, it deserves it.
So, are Peter Jacobson and Jesse Spencer already out?
If Jesse Spencer is out, I’m out. Chase is the only reason why I’m still watching. It seems such a ludicrous desicion to have Olivia Wilde full term while the more popular (let alone more talented) cast members have to face cut offs in both screen time and salary.
This show would be so much better if it got rid of the black hole Lisa Edelstein…the only thing she contributes to the show is showing her tits and ass…
I can’t believe Laurie is only getting 400,000 an episode still. I guess he’s getting a nice chunk of the syndication money, too.
Who cares about Omar Epps. The whole fandom calls him “Boreman”! I want Jesse Spencer in Season 8. He is the only hot guy on the team. House will be an old people show without him.
I believe that Laurie also owns a piece of the show and his cut is not include in the $400,000, though I wouldn’t swear to that.
First these shows stopped shooting on Film; 50k per episode saved. Then they stopped color correcting dailies; another 15k per episode saved. But instead of banking savings going from 4 perf film to 3 perf film to HD tape, these narcissistic fucks just shoot more. Every year the actors get a ton more, so a few peripheral characters get trimmed to save a buck or two. All in all the finished product sucks. Ever watch Hawaii 5-0 in 720p HD? The opening credits alone pixelate so bad that they’re unwatchable.
4 perf film on uncompressed 1080-24p any day for me.
And if this show costs more to produce than it generates in income then axe it. Hopefully there’s something out there worth 43 minutes of someones time each week.
If you look at the ratings for last week, House only outperformed Bones buy one tenth of a rating point with A18-49. Now, Bones has an Idol lead-in whereas House has to be a self starter but still that has to factor in FOX’s decision in how much they are willing to pay for this series.
Why hasn’t Jesse Spencer been mentioned? If he is out, I’m out. Shame how they cut the popular and talented cast members in favour of a wannabe movie star who cannot act at all. TPTB seem to have a huge crush on her.
Network television rarely sees talent as reliably compelling as Hugh Laurie. He IS the show. But to whittle away the excellent support players on what has been admittedly considered the final season is crazy. This series has brought discerning eyes to Fox that otherwise rest only upon cable quality enterprises. Show a little gratitude for the success that’s been this stellar series.
So FOX makes over $1 Billion on the show so far and stand to make hundreds of millions more and they turn around and nickel and dime the cast. Heck, the cast should say they’ll take a pay cut if all FOX Executives take the same pay cut. Say, “Fine will take a 10% pay cut right after you all take a 10% pay cut.”
NBC should be talking to pick up the show and at the same price, no pay cuts, and even if they don’t get the show, NBC would make FOX pay more to keep House.
