2ND UPDATE: Gee, if I were Amy Pascal and Michael Lynton, I wouldn’t let him go. But Sony Pictures’ Josh Goldstine has less than three months left on his contract. This is the guy mostly responsible for Battle: LA‘s really fresh ad campaign, along with The Social Network‘s. The announcement will be made possibly as soon as this week, and Michael Moses will remain as co-President of Marketing. But it’s a real coup for Universal to snag someone this good from outside the studio to replace Eddie Egan in the top marketing job at Universal Pictures. Fogelson had been talking to Egan and Goldstine about the move for the past few months. (FYI, LA Times today posted Goldstine’s name first.) And, yes, veterans will recall that Goldstine was suspended briefly after the advertising department he supervised at Sony Pictures was responsible in 2001 for fabricating quotes by a nonexistent film critic who praised four of the studio’s movies in its advertisements.

Good luck, JG!
Mazeltov Josh! Universal is lucky to have your heart and smarts. You go guy!!!!
All our love,
Marcia and Nyla
Best luck to Josh and Universal.
They wanted this guy gone for a long time. If he had three months left on his contract, why wasn’t it renewed?
Spider-Man, Social Network, Every Will Smith film. Goldstine is at the top of his game. Totally deserves it.
UGh that tired bull about Goldstine having anything to do with the bs quote controversy has got to stop. It was some loser under him and like a gentleman he took some of the blame but had nothing to do with it and everyone knows that.
stop that. Josh is a GREAT executive, and i think sony is nuts to let him go after the success hes had the last decade, dating back to the first MIB. But the fake review was his call, he took the hit because he HAD to, but who cares, it’s marketing…i dont know anyone in that field who wouldnt or hasn’t done something similar.

Actually, you got that completely backwards. The guy who was fingered, took the fall for Josh’s bad idea. I was there and was as disgusted as everyone else.
UGH.
Universal has won!! Sony’s loss. Josh is the hardest working man in the industry, and the MOST creative.
About Time. I’m happy for you Josh!
Well done Josh. Long well deserved. A great hard working guy.
The guy rocks for sure. TSN’s campaign was really fresh. But Battle L.A.’s, really?
It’s about time Universal upgraded their marketing department. When was the last time Universal actually did great marketing for a film? It’s either been a crapshoot, misrepresenting a film entirely, or unremarkable.
And since he’s from a studio known for aggressive and effective promotion, that’s quite a coup. Universal nabbed a great replacement.
Don’t these guys just yay or nay the work of outside vendors? I mean, let’s not overstate the creativity of a marketing head.
The fake critic was created by Matthew Cramer. Goldstine supervised the department and had to get a wrist slap as well but was not the person who made that garbage up. Good luck at Uni. They need the help.
Battle: LA‘s really fresh ad campaign?
Yes it was definitely fresh. Good looking, a ‘not the ordinary’ cue, posters that didnt rely on the cast selling the movie. The campaign presented an event film, where it could have gone the route of a standard March B Movie
My how things have changed. Couple of years ago, this is what people had to say about Josh-

Fascinating how a few years and hiring a pr person can change reality.
Matthew Cramer did NOT create the fake critic. He was instruted to do so by Josh in order to get a quote for a bad film. Matthew did pull a name out of the air from his past. Later one, Josh did it agin on at least two other films…and threatened those under him with the words” just do it’!
Matthew took the real fall and lost his job. He found a job on the agency side, and then Josh made sure he never got any work from Sony. Almost every Ad exec who knew what really went on were eventually let go. And thats what really happened.
