Between the VIP section of newly picked up series and the pilot of rejected pilots is the no man’s land of pilots that are neither dead nor picked up yet. Here is a rundown on what is still alive and which dead pilots are looking for life elsewhere:
EXIT STRATEGY: Fox passing on the Ethan Hawke-starring action drama pilot was one of the biggest surprises on Tuesday when Fox made its series pickups. But the project, from 20th TV and Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman’s K/O Paper Products, is very much alive at the network for a possible midseason order. Veteran director-producer Ken Olin has come on board to help with the retooling of the project. He worked with Orci and Kurtzman on Alias where he also met K/O president Heather Kadin, then an ABC exec. Olin is expected to serve as co-showrunner if Exit Strategy is picked up to series. The pilot has been praised for the look established by director Antoine Fuqua but I hear that Fox brass felt the action needed to be infused with more character. Olin is already pitching ideas to do that, working alongside creator David Guggenheim who comes from the feature world and has no TV experience. Besides Hawke, a rare bona fide movie star to agree to do a broadcast series, Exit Strategy has something else going for it – the huge popularity surrounding Seal Team Six, the elite group that killed Osama bin Laden. On the show, Hawke leads a similar team dispatched around the world on clandestine rescue operations. “Everyone will be pitching Seal Team 6 series for next season, and we already have one ready to go,” one insider said.
FAMILY ALBUM: The single-camera family comedy directed by Shawn Levy and starring Mike O’Malley was also initially poised for retooling, and Fox asked producing studio 20th TV to film a second episode. But I now hear that the pilot may be on track for a midseason order.
LITTLE IN COMMON: The other Fox family comedy pilot left in contention. I hear the project, which stars Rob Corddry and Kevin Hart, will probably go on a slower track and will undergo some reworking for midseason consideration. Ditto on yet another family comedy, ABC’s SMOTHERED starring Marcia Gay Harden, Adam Arkin and Julie White.
LOCKE & KEY: the high-profile horror pilot, which Fox passed on, is being shopped to cable networks – both premium and basic – by 20th TV’s cable division Fox 21. The instant interest stems from the fact that Locke & Key is a pre-sold title as it is based on Joe Hill’s graphic novel.
Also shopped to cable is Stephen Gaghan’s sprawling drama pilot METRO, which didn’t make the cut at NBC. There is also talk about taking another NBC pilot, Michael Patrick King’s A MANN’s WORLD, to cable.

Ok then great. Where are the rest of CBS’ pickups? This is highly unusual.
Yes it is highly unusual for the Networks NOT to announce all their pickups before they actually have upfront announcements. I mean, what the hell… How dare they NOT announce before the date on which they’ve planned to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars to host parties and fly out stars etc… I mean don’t they have any respect for all of us here on the internet. Highly unusual.
Yes I’m a dick — but that’s how I respond to morons.
CBS is ALWAYS quiet till the last minute!
Why didn’t Bob Greenblatt pick up Metro or Reconstruction?
Hopefully AMC picks up Locke & Key. The show would compliment season 2 of The Walking Dead. The Walking Dead has already proven to be very successful, they have probably been looking for a companion series to air next to it anyways. Perfect match!
Ditto. LOCKE AND KEY was a really good script. It’s definitely better suited on cable though as FBC would’ve pulled a “Firefly” on it and cancelled it after 3 or 4 episodes.
Here’s hoping one of the networks picks it up.

So Fox picked up The New Girl, I Hate my teenage daughter, and now Family Album for mid-season. Plus Raising Hope is already renewed.
I think I’m most excited for The New Girl.
I’d like to see Exit Strategy picked up because I’d love to see Ethan Hawke on a regular basis. Also, Little In Common I hope gets picked up as I adore Rob Corddry.
They should just give Exit Strategy the go ahead for this fall. I mean seriously, no one watching it is gonna be watching it for character. They will be watching it for action. Who watched 24 for character development? Plus, you should cash in on the fact that the show has a movie star rather than not. They courted Hawke heavily for this. It’s kinda a slap in the face to him to do that and then be hesitant about picking it up.
Locke & Key — I’m a fan of the comic book, and I would suggest that the producers try to shop it to ABC Family. That network seems to be the best fit for it.
With programming decisions like these, it’s no surprise that network television as we know it is on the verge of collapse. America is a beautiful mosaic and if our television programming doesn’t reflect that, moving forward, we simply won’t watch, it’s just that simple. It’s all so utterly pathetic!
DAVIS Guggenheim.
It is David. He also wrote the Denzel/Ryan Reynolds movie SAFEHOUSE. Davis is a director.
DAVID Guggenheim… Completely different person. Don’t feel bad though… I’m sure it’s nowhere near the stupidest or most holier than thou moment you’ve had today. You’ll score with your snark another time.
Its David. But good effort.
DAVID Guggenheim. Brother of Marc (Green Lantern) and Eric (Miracle).
so glad that Locke and Key is being shopped around. Hope someone picks it up, HBO maybe. I’ve been reading the comic, and the story is amazing.
I can’t wait for New Girl and Family Album! Fox needs some new awesome comedies.
watch out for Ethan Hawk in the new tv MOBY DICK starring William Hurt
I heard Bravo was trying to get into the scripted drama game. It seems like A Mann’s World might be a perfect fit for the channel seeing as it stars an established star (Don Johnson) and deals with subject matter akin to the network (hairstyling).
I’m really hoping Metro makes it onto a cable network. It seems like something that could land at either TNT, AMC, A&E, or FX. Though, I think the show’s best fit is either on AMC or A&E (A&E seems like a stronger bet then AMC, at this point). It still surprises me that NBC opted not to pick up Metro, maybe they’re looking at the passed upon pilots from the rival networks for possible acquisitions (like Georgetown, for example?!?)
Locke & Key sounds perfect for a network like ABC Family which is pushing very strongly into the scripted game. That or it land SyFy channel or possibly Reelz if it’s willing to fund a fully scripted series (that’s not a mini-series). If not, I could see it landing possibly at FX.
Can someone tell if RECONSTRUCTION by JOSHUA BRAND is being shopped to any cable networks. METRO and RECONSTRUCTION should go to FX, they fit the bill. NBC should have created their own cable network to compete with HBO, AMC, and SHOWTIME
Actually HFO got there first as their Commander McGarrett is a SEAL. SOmething most commentators on the show totally miss and keep calling him Detective, which makes me wonder if they’ve ever actually seen it properly.
It’s the reason he doesn’t work like a cop and the reason Danny’s always freaking out. So HFO already have their own resident (albeit not on active duty) SEAL.
…..and Wonder Woman is just dead? One of the highest profile and buzzed about is just dead in the water. Come on folks, try TNT, the CW or even G4.
I always thought Metro would’ve made a better mini-series then a series. They could make it a 4 or 6 hour mini-series over 2 or 3 nights. Then maybe after the first mini-series do it again, having it one to two times a year, during sweeps months.
I am very disappointed about Poe. It sounded creative quirky and fun. Why not try something different instead of all the endless tiresome cop lawyer or doctor proceduals? I like period pieces and historical mysteries.
I will give many of the new shows a try, and think I might like Smash, Pan Am and a few others. Do rejected pilots ever get shopped to other networks? Someone should reconsider Poe!
Have you even read Locke & Key? It’s a mature readers series with moderate profanity and at times is very violent. It’s definitely not appropriate for children, so why would you think it’s a good fit for ABC family? Teens and older, IMO.
I see posted about ABC picking up Locke and Key…why would you think that? They just dropped V and No Ordinary Family. Seems like people are only interested in crime solvers, lawyer, cop and detective programs which are only about how many different ways a person is killed.
LITTLE IN COMMON is a gem. Will run for many seasons. FOX…pick it up and let the good times roll.
Ken Olin seems to spoil everything he touches. I don’t get why he keeps getting shots at highly creative levels?
What about the GERALD MCRANEY CBS pilot, please?
Any info on it? Thank you!
A MANN’S WORLD sounds like the kind of show that would do really well on HBO. Nowhere else. I hope it ends up on there but HBO being HBO may not want to be associated with picking a show that some other web didn’t want.
But come on, would this kind of show work on the other webs? ABC maybe. But it’s NBC’s pedigree and the show is more cable suited for cable and not the mass audience that NBC wants/should have. (no one is allowed to attack me saying that NBC isn’t the place for daring shows. I’ll whoop your ass!)
