Music industry executives tell me that they’d be stunned if Universal Music can turn American Idol’s new winner Scotty McCreery into a big enough star to set him up for a long-term career. The teenager is seen as a likable country music performer who could have a few hits if he’s paired with catchy tunes and a shrewd producer. But they say that he didn’t display the charisma, vocal dexterity or strong point of view that singers typically need in order to endure or broaden their appeal to the pop market. McCreery’s limitations will become more obvious as he tries to compete with compelling country music hitmakers including Taylor Swift, Sugarland, Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban — and Idol’s Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood. True, the weekly appearances on television’s most popular show have made McCreery a household name. But so were previous winners Lee DeWyze, Kris Allen and Taylor Hicks, who have yet to set the music world on its ear. That may have had something to do with the fact that up to now Idol winners were at the mercy of Sony Music’s Clive Davis whose commercial instincts haven’t kept up with the times. McCreery and other Idol finalists who land recording deals will work with a hipper group led by Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Universal’s Interscope-Geffen-A&M.
Still, there’s only so much a producer can do. So here’s a thought for next year: Why not change the voting process so it doesn’t give so much power to the young text-messaging viewers who love bland contestants — but not deeply enough to buy their records? Or maybe Idol just needs judges who will insist that performers do more than pick personally appropriate songs and sing them on pitch.

He won’t have a real lasting career. As mentioned if it weren’t for tweens with cell phones the finale would not have played out even close to the way it did. Just cause mommy gave you a cell phone, doesn’t mean they get money to buy the albums with. Haley could have a real lasting future, Scotty will fade into the oblivion where he belongs.
I couldn’t give a damn whether this kid succeeds or fails in life.
I’m a writer, just trying to keep abreast of projects going on in Hollywood.
Here’s a thought. Why not let the kid enjoy his success for a couple days before tearing him to shreds on the Internet? Because you do realize that he and his family are reading every last thing about them online, don’t you?
How about you? You’re a writer. Instead of covering other people’s accomplishments for a living, at whatever age you are, do you ever look in the mirror and say, Darn, people with less education and less parental help are doing amazing things in the writing world, while I’m tearing down a teenager? How terribly obnoxious of you.
Great, great post.
I totally agree…. I’m a 26 year old woman. And I adored Scotty from day one…and do you realize not once did the judges say anything negative about Scotty. If anything every week he grew and he got better and better…He does take advice well with the right guidance he will go far….And yeah hes 16. Give him a chance! I’m looking forward to seeing Scotty at Mohgen Sun on Aug. 21st. Go Scotty!
Well said.
“Because you do realize that he and his family are reading every last thing about them online, don’t you”
I hope you are being sarcastic.
David, looks like you’ve been breathing Nikki’s air too long.
McCreery has been Idol champ for what 72 hours and you have to rip on him. Who said Idol had to produce the next hit machine? The show enjoyed a jump in ratings and viewers this season. News Corp. can’t gush anymore about it in quarterly fiscal calls. And who didn’t like the new judges? Oh, that’s right, you probably missed snarky Simon.
True, Haley would have a better chance in the real world. She’s got a solid vocal character. The other finalist, Lauren Alaina, she’s just got schooled on her duet with Carrie Underwood. She is like a generic country singer compared to Carrie. How can you expect her to be successful?
Actually, the bulk of voters are females over the age of 21. That said, the problem is those voters are from primarily conservative/Red states, so we end up with safe, male, non-ethnic singers who appeal to that demographic. The last 3 winners in a row have proven this. Until Idol institutes some sort of voting structure, you can expect white male youth pastors to keep winning.
@Dan, that’s reverse racism.
What a sad individual you are.
And that was directed towards the first post, not “Please,” who I agree with.
I actually think he’ll do pretty well. But I’ve been wrong before.
James Durbin was the real winner. and like in past seasons the real careers with the exception of Carrie goes to those that are the runners up. Tweens go crazy on the phones , but they don’t buy music.
@Joe: you are correct except for one person–Kelly Clarkson has been very successful..but that was before Idol became a ‘juggernaut’ and the voting got out of hand. The voting methodology is definitely a problem as it does skew completely to tween and younger girls, thus the lack of a female winner since Jordan Sparks. This season was a particularly strong one, there were several candidates who have what it takes to become big..in my view, Scotty isn’t one of them, although he does have a pleasant enough voice and I expect he’ll do ok on the country charts…at least initially. Longevity..not sure..but he’s also very young, which could work in his favor. Or not!
i thought james was amazaing on the finale, showing the world that he really should have been the winner. it was kind of obvious. i hope he gets the backing and most importantly the songs to make him the kind of artist who can build a good foundation and sell some records….
NO, but parents buy what the “tweens” want. What parents would not rush out to buy Scotty’s CD if their kid wanted it. I know I would–usually their head banging hardrock music give me a headache. Parents would welcome their music in the home anyday and BUY IT!!!
He should be working at McDonald’s by 2013.
the ‘judging’ has always been a joke, save for simon cowell who at least was honest in his assessment. but this season was particularly terrible. steven tyler was a bad choice and it seemed he gave up mid-way through the season. jennifer lopez didn’t seem comfortable or have too much to say and randy looked like a guy happy he wasn’t fired or asked to leave.
i think no judges might be a better move.
Scratching my head because today’s music industry executives are overseeing some of the weakest record sales in decades. Here is a reality check: Idol has produced a ton of stars both winners and runners up. In a music world populated by a plethora of one-hit wonders, in just 9 years, “Idol” has produced, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Kellie Pickler and Fantasia Barrino. That’s a pretty damn good track record and who knows what other past contestants may yet rise to prominence?
I have no doubt the country music fans will embrace Scotty McCreery as they have Carrie Underwood and the crossover artist, Kelly Clarkson. Songwriters will be lining up to have this young, likable kid croon their music. So much talent at such a young age and he’s likable because he HAS charisma. I’m rooting for him.
Now if only Jennifer Lopez would just sign up to continue as a judge in season 11… Idol only made me like her even more. They need to continue this trio. The chemistry is as good as the first few seasons of Idol, before Simon Cowell became gratingly acerbic. Season 10 was the most enjoyable in the last few years. There is no doubt Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez breathe new life into the show.
I like your post Aaron.
Love Jennifer Lopez and Randy. Could do without Steven Tyler though.
I’ll give your Clarkson, Underwood, and to some extent Daughtry, but not the others. Pickler is barely a top 20 artist, Jennifer Hudson is not exactly lighting up the charts, and Fantasia Barrino is a joke. With the exception of Clarkson, Underwood, and Daughtry AI has been putting out mostly mediocre talent for years.
Jimmy you are a joke because Fantasia has done very well. Fantasia’s first album sold 2 million copies, her second album went gold and her third album also went gold. In addition, Fantasia was a hit on Broadway in the Color Purple.Fantasia has an audience that is a R&B urban audience not the mainstream.
Well Jennifer does have an Oscar. And she got it for a Musical. What other 7th place Reality Competition Show loser has gone on to win an Oscar?
Yes…I totally agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You’re ignoring the fact that all those people you mentioned were years ago. They haven’t produced a star in a couple of seasons. The past three winners have failed, can’t say I’d be surprised if Scotty does too, especially since country radio is already against him.
adam lambert is a star dude. sorry to break that news to you.
Tyler and Lopez stink. Judges? More like cheerleaders!
Kelly Clarkson wasn’t a crossover artist.
I agree with your comment Aaron!!! I never watched a whole season of AI until this year due to the fact that I could not stand Simon.
I wish Scotty and Lauren the best of luck in their futures and their futures look very promising to me. Yes, both are young and both got the “tween” vote and according to some folks opinion that is the only reason they won. Our youth need positive role models, and I am thrilled they have Scotty and Lauren–this is so refreshing!!! I am glad that our teen oh I meant “tweens” have a voice. The teen and tween population do influence what is produced to sell–be it music, fashion or the movie industry. I am sure someone will cash in on their success and this will only help them continue their success. I have worked with at-risk and troubled teens for many years and their response to Lauren and Scotty was surprising to me as they talked about them and their support for them to win.I thought they would refer to them as country bumpkin, as many internet writer have, but they did not–they supported them and voted for them. I was thrilled to see the 365 degree turn in their music interest and the fact that they had a voice and could vote was so reassuring for them when Scotty won. Oh, and it was not just teen and tween girls that were thrilled about Scotty–we are talking some hard core street boys were supporting him.
I had written Scotty off at the beginning of the season because he’s a one trick pony but the judges continual praise (for everyone) and elimination of superior singers like Pia foretold his win over the non-commericial options of Jacob Lusk or James Durbin. McCreery is hardly unique for Idol’s having trouble finding success post-win. What kind of singles chart success did Ruben have? Fantasia’s career has been found as a tabloid headline, Taylor Hicks and Lee DeWyze make people wonder “Did he really win that year?!” Even Jordin Sparks who’s made an effort to be a pop star has hard a tough time get hits out of decent songs.
Scotty will do okay because older fans will buy his music but Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber have nothing to fear about losing their teen superstar status to Scotty. His inability to perform outside of corny eyebrow raising and holding the mic like a flute won’t propel him to the A list. Take a look at Scotty….Kellie Pickler just found her opening act.
Your comment is spot on. Besides, McCreery doesn’t sound like “new country” (i.e. Tim McGraw and Blake Shelton), he sounds like “old country” (i.e. George Strait and Randy Travis). I sometimes think the kids who are voting for some of these contestants are doing it as a joke. Like writing Mickey Mouse in on a political ballot. They’ve done it before. Remember Sanjaya (SIC) from a few seasons ago?
Whats wrong with George Strait and Randy Travis? They are icons in the country field! If you dont like country music dont dis theyre performers. Or country music for that matter!! Love Scotty!!!!!
If you’re going to tell someone off, at LEAST use the correct spelling and grammar. I’m fifteen and even I can do that.
I’m sorry but scotty is the most boring idol to ever win and he does not compare to the likes of lee dewyze and kris allen. He never had a moment song, nor even a song that I think anyone can remember because it’s the same song that he sang week after week. It is just so sad that with such great and exciting talent this year (pia, casey and James), that the voters at large chose the worst top 3 ever. I hope that those record breaking voters actually buy his CD — if they do then he will be a success. If they don’t, they are just stupid.
Lotta middle-age haters here…
how about you give the kid a shot? just cause nobody will give you one….
Give the kids a break… They are 17. They did homework the day of the final show!
Ask those know-it-all music execs if they could have predicted the success of Lady Gaga, Steven Tyler or The Osmonds when those performers were 16.
Well…
Steven Tyler was 19 when he wrote his first hit (Dream On) and joined Aerosmith. Stefani Germanotta gained early admission to a prestigious New York high school when she was 17 (having already performed lead roles in musicals prior to that). Donny Osmond was a teen idol at the age of 14.
Your logic is faulty. Anyone worth their salt would have predicted these three would go on to bigger and better things.
LOVE STEVE POST–HE HAS A GREAT POINT!!!!
..and might I add, who the F@!# is Lee DeWyze? Honestly. Who the hell is that?
..and might I add, who the F@!# is Lee DeWyze?
————————————-
Isn’t that the William Shatner show on CBS?
I actually think the judges were the only interesting thing this year. The singers were okay, generic for the most part. If it weren’t for the change in judges this year would have been a wash.
Face it, the future-success of the winners of this show have always been dubious. There will always be some that make it and some that don’t. I don’t think America really cares about who wins anymore, the novelty is gone and thus the interest in the winner once the show is off the air. This years winner seems like an amiable enough kid but he looks like a dorkier version of Clay Akin (if that’s possible) only with less talent. I wish him all the best but I don’t think even with the Idol machine behind him his best is going to be good enough.
The show needs to figure a way to give their winners some longevity or it ultimately becomes a joke too.
Said it on a previous post, and I’ll say it again….Idol needs to find a way to attract edgier artists that are the complete package. I’m convinced the reason they can’t is because of its corny, Glee club-ish ensemble numbers with the matching outfits and grandpa choreographed dancing. Not to be outdone by the embarrassing Ford commercials those contestants are made to participate in throughout the season. No singer/musician with any sense of artistic integrity is going on that show. Only singers with marginal talent and a make-it-at-any-cost mentality (even if it means acting like cruise ship entertainers while singing a Lady Gaga cover) will be on Idol. They need to shake up the format if they are going to compete with new Idol knock-offs like “The Voice”, who seem to be avoiding the sell-out vibe, in future years and produce winners that will remain relevant past the post finale media blitz.
The voting process is dumb. Never watched the show before until this season, and watched primarily because I though Steven would be great. He was in the beginning, until they got to the live episodes, and then he vanished and was too busy mouthing “i love you” to his daughters which was weird. The talent was there, however, the direction from the judges was all so different and inconsistent from week to week. Probably won’t watch ever again.
What me worry?
Wow. The know it all posters/haters have a keyboard. This kid has the country’s attention.
AGREED!!!! And what great role models they are for our country and our youth!!! What a great role model James is for kids with autism–he should be a spokes person for autism in my opinion. There were other life lesson out there for the TWEENS that voted for Scotty and Lauren, a negative attitude as evidenced in facial jestures, that so many tweens do–parents know the look–do not get you the votes–YOU LOSE!!! With that being said I think AI this year had a lot of messages for our youth today.
Singers rarely make hits these days, producers do. There are plenty of awful singers selling tunes. I just have to say…nice comment by Wyldeman45 “money to buy albums” what year are you living in?
Lauren will be the real star to emerge from the Idol dust… Betcha!
Isn’t this the guy who booted the sweet, innocent 15 year old kid out of his group, only an hour or two after he had felt the pain of being kicked out of a group himself?
Well done, America. Well done.
being one that has lived on the front lines in nashville for most my life I will bet that this kid will not do very well. sure everyone will line up to write songs for him – they need the money, but a sustainable career? with real fans? who buy his record years from now? not going to happen.
the point is and has always been AI is a yearly show with a yearly winner created to sell advertising (as is everything) and has nothing to do what so ever with the long time viability of the artist who wins. ads, ads, and more ad dollars – that’s what it’s about. let’s not get carried away thinking otherwise.
Funny they said the same thing about ELVIS!!!!!!
He’ll probably do well. He’s got a pretty good old-school voice and with training and experience it’ll be as rich and smooth as your morning java. Perhaps with a few hits of Jack Daniels and maybe a line or two of coke (just a li’l bit) he’ll get a feel of the country blues and actually bring emotion and a “lived life” into his music.
Men who sing country and haven’t lived aren’t very interesting IMO… and little Scotty, a teenager, still has to find his edge.
Scotty and Lauren’s debut albums will rocket to the top of the country charts. He should do well if he doesn’t get weird like Clay Aiken. But, for every Kelly Clarkson and Daughtry there’s a Lee Dewyze and a Crystal Bowersox. I thought this season’s finale was the best ever!!
I agree… I enjoyed Scotty…=)
Let’s not forget that the country music audience isn’t as receptive as mainstream music execs think it is. They wouldn’t even embrace Jessica Simpson’s phoned-in attempt to go country (and wisely so).
What is the be thing about this…..seriously, they are all talented kids who all deserve a shot and all will get a shot with so much exposure over the last few weeks. Leave the poor kid alone….and, yes, there were others that are fantastic….but, they will all do well if they continue to work at their craft……….and keep on going no matter what anyone has to say about them. The final show was fantastic. This was by far the best year…but, that’s just my thoughts.
The country audience is remarkably loyal. If there were enough of them to vote him the American Idol this year (and, by all accounts, he lead pretty much the whole way in the voting rounds), then there are enough to give him a career too.
But, sure, song-writing, or picking best of breed of other song-writers for you, is incredibly important –always was, always will be.
If Kelly Pickler could do it, then sure as heck Scotty and Lauren can.
I’d actually like to see them try a Conway Twitty/Loretta Lynn thing with those two. There is a tradition of strong male/female country duos.
The problem with your logic is Kellie Pickler didn’t do it.She had one gold album in 2006.Her second album in 2008 didn’t reach gold and since then she hasn’t done anything beside tour small town venue.
If he transitions into Christian country he’ll probably be a millionaire in a year. I can see far-right pols using him like they did Joe the Plumber.
Your name says it all for me. What? You left wing wing nut.
