EXCLUSIVE: Simon Cowell sure knows how to turn up the behind-the-scenes drama on TV shows, whether he’s appearing on them or producing them. I’ve just learned that Paula Abdul has been asked to show up for the judges panel for his U.S. version of The X Factor in Los Angeles on Sunday. But here’s the thing: I’m told her deal still isn’t done yet but is in “final negotiations.” Reps are working all day and probably all night to get it done before tomorrow’s 1 PM and 6 PM tapings of auditions with wannabe contestants when the full judgespanel assembles for the first time at USC’s Galen Center.
But Simon Cowell is counting on his former American Idol sidekick to show up anyway because, hey, they’re friends. ”But will she really show up? No way her reps will let her go if that deal isn’t done,” an insider just told me. The sticking point at first was that CBS still had a hold on Abdul stemming from her deal to headline another TV talent series as lead judge, Live to Dance, which debuted in January 2011 only to be canceled after one season. CBS wasn’t letting Paula go to Fox at first. That now seems to have been ironed out, but there still are several deal points to finalize. “She’s been asked to show up tomorrow whether her deal is done or not,” an insider explained to me.
Meanwhile, there’s also been behind-the-scenes drama regarding picking the hosts for The X Factor. Cowell told me recently he wants a known female performer and a young Hollywood actor to co-host. His initial picks were 32-year-old former head Pussycat Doll and ABC’s Dancing With the Stars standout Nicole Scherzinger, always his first choice to host, and Corbin Bleu, the 22-year-old African-American co-star of the High School Musical franchise. With both talents able to sing and dance, the possibilities for their hosting seemed myriad. But, according to an insider, at their first meeting, ”Nicole walked in and saw Corbin and his baby face and asked, ‘What are you, 15?’ And then she walked out.” So, just like that, Bleu was nixed. Instead, veteran UK emcee Steve Jones was flown in for an audition, and insiders say he had “chemistry” with Scherzinger. So now he’s a done deal for the gig. Like UK and now U.S. version X Factor judge Cheryl Cole, Jones isn’t known to American audiences. ”But Simon’s goal is to bring fresh talent and fresh faces to the U.S. and he’s doing it,” a source close to Cowell explains to me. A Fox insider laughs off concern there are too many Brits now on board this American show: ”We are going to have an advertising integration with Berlitz, so we are going to make a few extra bucks on the accents.”

Wow im shocked that Nicole would tray Corbin like that. I hope Paula works out, it will make the x factor all the more difference to member
Have to say I’m shocked at Steve Jones for the hosting gig. Three brits on the show seems a lot, but I guess in reality it doesn’t matter. I’m assuming FOX will have tested him with some focus groups and they must have liked him. Will be interesting to see how the Nicole/Steve co-hosting works. Will one be the main presenter and the other chatting more to the contestants?
Wow. Nicole is kinda a bitch then. She made Corbin lose a chance at a job. I didn’t want him to host, but damn nicole.
Who the hell is Corbin Bleu anyway???
I guess this means we should expect one or two of the following judges from the UK X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent to join the USA X Factor’s judging panel as well:
Dannii Minogue, Louis Walsh, Amanda Holden, Michael Mcintyre
Blah, blah, blah, why do you keep posting the same comment in every article related to the X Factor? Can’t you read? The judging panel is all set. We’re not expecting anyone else to join it.
Is Paula that much of a draw that they are willing to hand money over to CBS to get her on board? I just don’t see the attraction, but if she draws viewers then she draws.
Nicole is a good choice to host and Steve Jones has been tabloid fodder in the UK for years now – they’ll make a good pair.
Paula on the panel – not the best idea… makes the panel feel very lightweight alongside The Voice
I hope Paula works out…..so there.
I wonder if Corbin replied “What are you, a singer?”
So OVER all the hype about this show. With SImon and Paula, its basdically gonna be a fall edition of Idol. Cheryl is unknown but Im sure shell get a lot of attention and press behind her and will be fine…And they could get Jones and COle at cheaper prices. The Voice however seems to have beat them big time on the big name judges. I just dont have an y interest in this show anymore. Im saturated on singing shows and Cowell promised big names and something different and hasnt delivered on any of it yet. Plus 5 mill prize? How many of these singing competish winners have turned out to be mega international stars? Handful..Even bigtime doemestic stars???? I bet producers will create a group to win – either a teeny popper boy or girl band. This will make them different than Idol and also will be able to use the hype machine to really distinguish them and fill a void in todays music industry. With success of youngsters like Bieber and WIllow t heres a market but we have no current NSync, BSB, Spice Girls type group and Simon wil create it.
Also people keep saying Cole won recent X Factors; lets remind people her 09 winner Joe M cElderry has already been dropped by Simons label after just a year so its not like shes had that much success picking big stars.
I want this sh ow to fail now. Idol itself is a mystery to me as its become so boring and the judges forgot to judge. Its just a big informercial for JLO
Big named judges on The Voice? lol…
Who will care? It’s all about “The Voice” now! I think Simon might be surprised to find the audience is drained from the final weeks of Idol and the fresh idea of The Voice to care about one more show…
Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I agree with you about The Voice. It’s actually a fun and entertaining show to watch. Still has its corny moments but the judges actually seem to have an unforced chemistry.
WOW…two British judges and one British host…Simon Cowell should be really calling this show “The Brits Make Money Off American Talent”…my understanding is that many of the folks behind the scenes will also be heavily British…what will be the number of Americans in key positions?
I’m curious how Nicole and Steve will work together…the British X Factor also had co-hosts and has since dropped that…and American Idol also tried the co-host format and canned Dunkleman after one season..then they also brought in a pretty girl to play off Ryan and dropped her quickly after the auditions…my guess is that one of them will be dropped.
Also curious they went for another Brit…Simon doesn’t really want to compete with another name, I guess…audiences seem not to gravitate to foreign hosts see The One: Making of a Music Star (Canadian), Skating with The Stars (Brit), Live to Dance (Australian) and Dance Your Ass Off (Brit). Only Cat on SYTYCD has managed to work out and that show is barely successful and a failure during the regular broadcast season.
UK X Factor never had 2 hosts but Britains got talent did and continues to have so.
The point of the panel isn’t their ability to sing. Say what you will about Abdul’s weak if almost non-existent vocal ability but try and say she doesn’t know how to judge a pop star competition as well as stage a performance. She certainly knows how to work a stage more than Danni Minogue and Christina Aguilera.
I’m surprised at Cowell’s choice of Sherzinger as a host. She was great on the judging panel but she’s the emotional judge like Jlo and Abdul so the clear cut/even keeled hosting duties needed aren’t evident in her. I also don’t know if two hosts are needed. After putting together such a solid panel I’m seeing some weak points here with the hosting duties. You actually do need someone as bland and generic as a Carson Daly to host these things.
I find it hard to believe Nicole would take one look at Corbin and walked out of the room. I think the show is trying to create drama, just like they did with AI and Jennifer.
Paula Abdul? Really? I honestly thought Simon had smarts and would compile the best judges for those seats, but, Paula? Really? Whoever said she had any judging ability, she was a joke on Idol, and her comments were laughable on that short-lived show a while back. Every word out of her mouth was exactly the same, no matter who she was critiquing. Man, this is one strange world in which we live. It seems luck not talent is the criteria for getting ahead!
Of course, Paula’s negotiations are “going to last minute” — it’s a great publicity stunt to keep this story alive until audition. Would this story even be written if she was signed, sealed and delivered? I doubt it. Simon is brilliant when it comes to this stuff. I’m pretty certain after that LTD fiasco, CBS is happy to let Paula go – it’s a red herring.
Nicole is a very good person, she’s so beautiful and talented. I don’t this rumor is real but if it is, Nicole has the right. Corbin is NOTHING TODAY and he has a baby face which SUCKS!
Corbin’s more relevant than Nicole is…i hope this show fails.
Actually, Corbin Bleu has been working steadily since HSM ended in a wide variety of projects and every review I have seen has been positive if not gushing. He is putting the ‘teen star’ image behind him ste by step without tabloid drama or cheap stunts – the way one needs to to still be working in 5 years much less 30.
So, he didn’t need this gig where Nicole does. He can get respectable work in his chosen field where she cannot. People generally take him seriously where no one sees her as yet another cheap tabloid skank.
And if you’ve seen any pictures of him lately, he doesn’t look like he’s 15 but like what he is – a guy in his early 20′s while she can’t pass for ‘around’ her real age without cleaning out the makeup department each day.
I wasn’t surprised she would act up like this, but I was surprised she was allowed to get away with it. It sets a horrible precedent. She has been given all the power on the show and free reign to act up in any way she wants at any time. And if they try to dump her, she’ll just sue and claim (rightly now) that she “wasn’t behaving in anyway they they weren’t perfectly fine with before so how can it be terms for dismissal now?”
She should have been dumped right then and there. It would have taken the show less than a day to line up dozens of other under-employed but respectable potential hosts.
The only winner in this situation is Bleu, who has kept his mouth shut and shown the world how classy and professional he is. While she has shown she is the polar opposite. And who would you hire for a future project – the classy professional or the unprofessional diva?
Preach sista! thank you for posting that.
Dunkleman!
Why do people think we love Brits? You can barely understand a word Cheryl says nevermind the fact that she assaulted a woman. And this Steve Jones character – who? I’m so over the hype about Americans loving accents. They are sexy for a second, and then they are just tiring.
I agree.
WOW U.S.XFactor is going to be sooooooo AWESOME can’t wait for september. CHERYL IS FABULOUS
I’ve watched “Idol” for years and have grown tired of it. Initially, I was looking forward to “X Factor”, but I’m totally hooked on “The Voice” now. With the addition of Paula Abdul, “X Factor” just seems kind of pitiful now…. trying desperately to recreate the glory days of “Idol.”
Paula AND Cheryl? Two lightweight female artistes? Seems a little redundant. But I guess it’s worked for the UK version with Cheryl and Dannii. I’m surprised Simon didn’t lock down a heavyweight (I think Whitney would’ve been a great choice). Both Paula and Cheryl play off of Simon well, but it should be interesting to see how they get along with each other on the show.
How does that ridiculous has-been Paula have ANY leverage in her negotiations?
Despite the hype, I predict that this will bomb – big time. Perhaps if Idol had tanked this season, it would have had a chance. But I think this is one singing competition too many. And Simon Cowell desperately needs a comedown. X-Factor will be the vehicle for this comedown.
THE VOICE is garbage. Simon’s got a big-time chance at major success with this show and it seems everyone knows it. Even though the new IDOL judges don’t even judge, the ratings are still the best on TV.
What night will this show be on? I’ll make sure that I have a movie to watch. I’ll catch the ten minutes of decentness from the show the next day on the internet. Best to luck to all involved but I’m bored just reading about it. And unless Nichole is going to wear a bikini, what’s it matter if she’s on it?
It’s too tiring. Now Wayne Brady would have been a good choice. Never get enough of him.
Wayne Brady would have been the best choice!
