At the same time the firestorm stemming from Tracy Morgan’s homophobic remarks was raging on Friday, the 30 Rock co-star received a top award at the Monte Carlo Television Festival. Morgan was named best actor in a comedy series at the Golden Nymphs awards ceremony last night. U.S. series dominated the series categories, with Modern Family named best comedy, Mad Men best drama and Jon Hamm best drama actor. The best actress in a comedy series award went to top Germany comedienne Anette Frier for the title role in Danni Lowinski, which the CW tried to adapt this past development season. (Denmark’s Sidse Babett Knudsen won best drama actress for Government.) American shows also won all international TV audience awards: CSI (best drama series), Desperate Housewives (best comedy series) and The Bold and the Beautiful (best telenovela/soap opera)

Exercising your First Amendment Rights does not give you the right to say whatever you like without repercussion. The ONLY thing the First Amendment gives you is freedom from government intervention for the content of your speech. You can be (and people frequently are) fired from your job, have awards revoked, or get sued for something you said. Tracy Morgan has the freedom to say what he wants, and as non-government representatives we have the freedom to tell Tracy Morgan to shut the hell up in any fashion we see fit.

To wish for the destruction of an entire country for giving a golden statue to a single bigot is just as hateful as the remarks made by Tracy Morgan.

It is interesting how a guy who says something in his personal life as his person al is equated with a guy who was performing comedy act. Underscores the ability of some to differentiate between reality and fantasy. I understand politically why this is important. There is a lot of homophobia, including in Hollywood, but I also think there is a tendency to want to pretend this situation is something it is not. It is not the case of a rant in the middle of someone asking Morgan his personal views. Its a guy on stage performing. May be these are his personal views. I don’t know. I just am a little uncomfortable saying I can know that based on a comedy act.

The Bible forbids many things. For example, you can’t let different kinds of cattle graze together, you can’t wear clothes made of more than one fabric, Deuteronomy even instructs us to kill anyone who practices another religion. The things in the Old Testament were for different groups of people at different times. I read her comments and she basically dismissed it by saying it was not the Tracy she knows and hopes the LGBT community accepts his apology. She started off well, but her defense of him, undermined it. I have no beef with Morgan. He is a comedian and people can get so upset when you’re not PC. The whole thing is overblown.

no one is trying to take away his freedom, they’re asking that he recognizes the responsibility that comes with his stature. Neither life nor comedy exists in a bubble. eddie murphy in the 80s had a great bit about jesse jackson running for office, and he has to keep moving to avoid snipers …hysterical bit — now if an actual incident had occurred, that bit no longer becomes appropriate — it’s not that complicated. right now the LBGT community has s giant sniper’s scope on it, throwing a match on the gasoline helps no one. I pray a few years from now that, the offending material will just be viewed as not funny, instead of a call for violence. Unfortunately, that’s currently not the time we’re living in.
