Billy Bob Thornton has set Robert Duvall, John Hurt, Kevin Bacon, Robert Patrick and Ray Stevenson to star with Thornton in Jayne Mansfield’s Car, the first dramatic feature that Thornton has directed since 2001′s Daddy and Them. The film is being funded by AR Films, whose principal, Alexander Rodnyansky, will produce with Media Talent Group’s Geyer Kosinski. Production begins June 22 in Georgia.
Thornton, who co-wrote the script with frequent collaborator Tom Epperson, has been mobilizing the picture for a while and just locked his final cast. He has also set John Patrick Amedori to play a lead in the film. A comedy with dramatic overtone, it revolves around the culture clash of two families, from different continents, in 1969.
Rodnyansky is the founder of the Ukrainian TV channel 1+1 and former CEO of CTC Media when it became the biggest independent publicly traded media conglomerate in Russia with five channels in three countries. He has produced over 20 TV series and 30 films including Elena, which received the Special Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard category at Cannes last month. “I’ve started to look for opportunities in America, and this is definitely not a single picture strategy,” he told me. “When I read that script, I fell in love with it. I was a fan of Sling Blade and Billy Bob’s other movies. No matter where you are making movies, it’s all about the script.”
Thornton has been busy with his music, and he delivered strong performances in films like Monster’s Ball, Bad Santa and Love Actually. He also recently directed The King of Luck, a documentary about Willie Nelson. If he’s got another Sling Blade or All the Pretty Horses in him, welcome back to the director’s chair, Billy Bob.

love actually, sure
Where is a picture of the handsome Mr. Patrick ?
I feel sorry for his backers because he burned every bridge known by yelling at people for asking about his movies when promoting his album it will be hard to promote.
“No matter where you are making movies, it’s all about the script.” I wish the powers in Hollywood would recognize this and start giving some credit to the screenwriters. But then I again, I still believe in Santa Clause.
Let’s see- great script, great cast and great director! It’s not going to be hard to promote!
Sling Blade is my favorite all time Billy Bob movies, what an awesome job!
I watched it a couple times and tried to detect areas where he looses the character, can’t say I was able to pick up on anything.
One of the more convincing handicapped roles, I try doing it and always just end up being silly.
Great script, great story, very moving and eye opening film. But also very “Americana Drama” with no real international upside. Better hope it kills in the southern belt.
you may get evrything like good camera, actos, location and money but if the director is poor still the resouts will be poor
We shall see. I hope it is better than DADDY AND THEM another similar film about a Southern Family that he wrote, directed and acted in. All the Pretty Horses was directed by him and that almost ruined Matt Damon’s career. I think he should stick to Bad Santa sequels. He hasn’t done a good film in years. Does anyone under 21 even know who he is?? It is nice of Duvall, Beacon and the other actors to help a guy down on his luck out. Loyalty in Hollywood seems rare. I am not in the movie business but whoever is managing this career has really taken a great career and turned it into a joke. Anyway, I will hope this one’s better and he doesn’t make fun of Southern People again. We are his last loyal fans. Good luck Billy Bob.
well matt damon’s done a good job of that himself.
“After my third viewing of Xmen: First Class, I left the theater once again stunned with Kevin Bacon’s tour de force performance opposite heavyweight January Jones. I had to have him in my movie.”
-Billy Bob Thornton 6/13/11
A southern tale, by a southern man, filmed in the south? You bet your a** it’ll kill on the “southern belt”! Can’t wait to see it.
