Christopher Meloni, who a month ago surprised everyone by exiting his longtime home as co-star of NBC’s Law & Order: SVU, is in line for a big-time follow-up. I hear he is in negotiations for a major role in Man Of Steel, the Superman franchise reboot from Warner Bros that Zack Snyder is directing. No word yet on what part he might get, though. He would join such big-name players as Russell Crowe, Julia Ormond, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane in the film, which stars Henry Cavill as Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Meloni is repped by Gersh and Industry Entertainment.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Superman has two sets of parents – Crowe and Ormond play his birth parents, and Costner and Lane play his adoptive ones.
And I think he’s the 3rd Kryptonian.
100 clams says he’ll play a Federal agent or, shocker, a cop. The down to earth, everyman cop, a real ball-bustin’ palooka, who initially thinks Supes is an outlaw but comes to support him over time as he sees Supes save his beloved city and his family that he loves with all of his clogged, Irish heart.
Or something like that.
And his wife will die on, or offscreen.
Bet!
Inspector Henderson perhaps — a cop character created for the old George Reeves show that was later incorporated into the comic book.
Or “Terrible” Dan Turpin, a more recent tough cop character who was killed by Darkseid in the animated series.
Could he be Sam lane?
Man of steels budget is $175m and I would like to know if that’s including millions for wages for the cast or not.
Like Green Lantern, that’s just the starting budget. Once they are into prod and post, they plan to shakedown Legendary to kick in another $20 million. Production will far surpass $200 million, then a massive Green Lantern style marketing campaign, which will mostly be from Legendary’s share of the profits, thanks to fees. Robinov is convinced he can buy himself hits and he is going to spend, spend, spend on Superman to make it happen. Only this time he gets to use someone else’s piggy bank to do it.
Would you like to know “who” got their facts wrong @gino50? Russell Crowe and Julia Ormond are playing Kal-El’s parents from his home planet of Krypton. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are playing Clark Kent/Kal-El’s adoptive Earth parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent.
The only thing that’s “nonsense” is the fact that someone as ignorant as you has access to the internet.
Sorry, Peterzee, but that rule is voided by Batman Begins (Ras Al Ghul, Scarcrow, Falcone, Zsasz, The League of Shadows) and The Dark Knight (Joker, Two-Face, Scarecrow, Maroni).
See, it’s not the number of villains that ruin a movie, but what the writers decide to do with them. Have those villains who can hold up a film play a major role in the plot, and those that don’t play supporting roles. It’s been done before. It will be done again.
Also, those who think Lex Luthor is a villain and nothing more are misguided. Luthor is a crucial supporting character ala Lois Lane or Jimmy Olsen. A Superman story would be incomplete without Luthor, in any shape or form, in it.
Neat, I’ve always liked this guy’s acting. I hope the role is suited to his talents or his talents are suited to the role what ever it may be. Either way this man is a wonderful actor. I’ll miss him on “Law & Order”
He will be portraying Morgan Edge.
Edge is not the most exciting Superman villain, but certainly a better choice than bringing Luthor in once again. Honestly, they already have Zod why do they need another villain? That’s a major problem with the DC films over the last few years: too many villains in one film. Like The Dark Knight, why was Two-Face even needed when you had such a great character in The Joker?
With all due respect, Julia Ormond is not a big-name star.
Expect to see Chris Meloni in a Warner produce TV pilot coming to probably CBS next year.
meloni would be perfect as lex luthor he already knows how to play both sides of the law first being a con on the hbo series oz then svu cop on law and order come on snider make it happen we need some one great in this allready
I agree- this guy looks like he’d be good as Lex.
AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME! ManofSteel have got the best Superhero casting ever…..I’m telling you, THIS MOVIE WILL BE A HUGE HIT.
Simply heartfelt congratulations to Chris for this great f/u to his SVU exit! After so many years turning in journeyman work of such high caliber, it’s really nice to see one of the “Good Ones” get a role like this, in a prestige film for his first big feature. (Unless he’s done something else that I’ve missed.) But anyway: GOOD FOR YOU, CHRIS!
yeah, i’m one of his slobbering, adoring fans…so sue me!
Me too, with the slobbering and adoring thing; they’ll have to sue us both. A big congrats to Meloni for doing what I’ve heard he really wants to do – play different parts. I’ve read he really loves character roles so maybe the LL part is just what he needs.
So long SVU; you were great when I needed you but it’s time to move along!
Meloni? Abalone!
Well, I loved him on SVU and all I can say is that I hope they show lots shots of his amazing butt!! He is one hot DILF!!
in this film Superman loses his powers and is sent to jail as Clark Kent.
Meloni plays a sadistic prisoner who repeatedly abuses Clark Kent.
And I guess you’re his ass double.
He’d be perfectly imposing alongside zod. I do want to see lex but only in a smaller developing part that continues throughout the series. I hope they look at mark waids take on him in the fairly recent origin story for inspiration. Ignore the richard donner comic genius take.
I don’t want to see the movie without Tom Welling as Superman!
PERFECT CRISTOPHER MELONI SALUDOS:D
The other villain is called “The Fluffer.” You can imagine what he does. But I think Meloni might be too butch for the role. They should hire a Canadian for that, or maybe a Brit. Or anyone European for that matter.
Chris – i know you’re reading this, so please commit to the Oz prequel feature that has been kicking around.
Also, I’d like to see Chris Meloni in a buddy flick with Bruce Willis and Michael Chiklis: Three Angry Bald men.
he could be a great jimmy olsen!
Honestly…I wouldn’t mind seeing him in them mantights
Even though I wish him well, it’s REALLY going to be hard not to think of Chris Meloni as anyone but Elliot Stabler. And of course that’s likely why he pulled the plug on SVU…but it’ll be interesting to see what role he plays in Man of Steel…at least he sure knows how to surround himself with fabulous cast members! I’m anxious for the film to come out.
I think chris malone should have stayed on svu he and benson made svu. it wont be the same without him.
So sorry to see you leave SVU, Chris. My favorite show. Especially love Stabler!! I watch Law and Order every day. It is shown more than once a day and I don’t miss one of them, in fact it is on now.God bless you and all good thoughts about and for you.
