EXCLUSIVE: Following in the footsteps of Fox’s Glee, NBC has signed a deal with Columbia Records for the soundtrack of the network’s new musical drama series Smash. Additionally, Columbia has signed a solo recording pact with Smash breakout star and American Idol alumna Katharine McPhee. I hear Columbia, which also handles the soundtracks for Glee and the upcoming X Factor, landed the rights to Smash after a bidding war. The deal, brokered by NBCUniversal TV Consumer Products Group, gives Columbia Records worldwide, digital and physical rights to the first season of Smash,
with options to subsequent seasons. It includes both original songs, written exclusively for the TV series by the Tony Award-winning duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and covers of hit songs featured on the show. “Our Columbia Records partners will guide the soundtrack of Smash into a big component of the show’s success,” said NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt. Added Rob Stringer, Chairman of Columbia/Epic Label Group, “Music is at the heart of Smash, and with our wonderfully creative broadcast partners, we will develop innovative strategies to present this music to a huge audience.”
Smash, slated to air in midseason behind The Voice on Mondays, stars Debra Messing, Christian Borle, McPhee and Anjelica Huston and follows the creation of a Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe. Playwright/screenwriter Theresa Rebeck wrote the pilot and is executive producing the series with Steven Spielberg (on whose idea the show is based), Craig Zadan & Neil Meron, Darryl Frank & Justin Falvey, Shaiman & Wittman and David Marshall Grant. Following her runner-up finish on American Idol in 2006, McPhee has released two albums: a self-titled one in 2007, which premiered at the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200, and Unbroken in January 2010, which debuted at No. 27.

Wow!!! Good news Kat!!! This is Major!!!
Katharine is the true star of this show. Megan Hilty not mentioned? Wowza. lol
Smash is going to be a huge hit. It’s nothing like Glee.
Megan hilty clearly needs a new publicist. Or is her role really that small in the pilot to not warrant a mention? Hahahaha
Yeah. Why no mention of Megan Hilty?
Wasn’t a fan of McPhee until I bought her Christmas album….which is pretty good.
I hope Hilty gets her moment, too. Loved her in Wicked!
This is a lot of hype for a show that hasn’t even aired yet.
If there is one sure thing in Hollywood, it’s that nobody knows with 100% certainty what’s hot or not. Don’t be surprised if this show is a bust. The last time I saw NBC promote a “sure-thing” was “Studio Sixty on the Sunset Strip”. And we all know what happened to that show.
Ive seen the pilot and katharines the only memorable part of it.
There’s a reason why the critics are liking the pilot. A few people who’ve seen it have even cried because it was so ood and so emotionally moving.
Well, Charlize obviously isn`t one of them since she says only 1 performence out of 6 or so is memorable.
I am so happy that Katharine McPhee is getting the recognition that she deserves…she has the best voice that has ever come out of American Idol!
Katharine stalled quickly but she was such a natural on Idol, almost too sophisticated for the arena. i hope she soars….and never ever goes blond again.
Kat is finally realizing the fruits of her incredible talent and America will see that in “Smash”. Talent and hard work always wins out. Hear that Taylor Hicks?
What’s with NBC and “stars”? Do they really believe it’ll get them viewers easily?
Catherine is so hamonious..I wish u cud do a project wth th likes of jonathan butler/kirk franklin..all the best sis
