EXCLUSIVE: Comedy Central has ordered a pair of new sketch-based series for its 2012 lineup: The Nick Show Kroll, featuring the stand-up comic, and an untitled series starring MadTV alum Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele. “I haven’t seen either pilot yet, but I think so highly of the talent involved, I can’t imagine the shows won’t be great,” said Kent Alterman, Comedy Central’s head of original programming and production.
Kroll, whose one-hour stand-up special aired on the network in January, is executive producing and writing his series with John Levenstein and Jonathan Krisel, who is also directing. Based on the pilot presentation ordered back in May 2010, the premiere episode features “The PubLIZity Girls,” with Kroll and Jenny Slate as publicists on the verge of a nervous breakdown while arranging a swanky event for a client; “The Ed Hardy Boyz,” featuring Kroll as Bobby Bottleservice, who, along with Peter Paparazzo (Jon Daly), solve mysteries for Christian Audigier, King of the Ed Hardy fashion empire; Kroll as an inappropriate basketball ref who tries to hang out with the players after the game; and “Rich Dicks,” which sees Kroll as Aspen Bruckheimer, son of Jerry, who, along with his old-moneyed friend Wendy (Daly) are rich, on the prowl and ready to party at a moment’s notice.
The untitled Key-Peele project sees the pair in front of a live studio audience bantering about a topic weaved between filmed shorts and sketches. The topic in the pilot is lying, which gives way to skits involving Lil’ Wayne, President Obama and a reality cooking competition chef who is impossible to read. Key and Peele are executive producing with Ian Roberts and Jay Martel.

You haven’t seen the pilots yet? Are you INSANE?!
It’s called sarcasm. Get it? Comedy?
You’ve been Comedy Central’d!
Whatever the dubious merits of the attached talent notwithstanding, what can possibly be done in the sketch comedy arena that hasn’t already been done a thousand times before? I mean, start with “Python”, go to “SCTV”, drop in on “Mr. Show” and end up at “Tim and Eric”. Those are the four sides of the sketch board, and any further attempts at sketch are almost pointless. That particularly holds for anything baked up by the cluelesscrew over at Comedy Central, who in their twenty-five year history have never mounted a single watchable minute of scripted comedy – “South Park” being the sole exception. The funniest thing about Comedy Central is their logo – unintentionally ironic.
Nick Kroll is super-funny and a nice guy as well. Good stuff.
Seriously? Did anyone at Comedy Central even watch Nick Kroll’s stand-up special? It was seriously the worst stand-up I’ve ever seen. Tracey Morgan’s stand-up was probably funnier than Kroll’s (and considering one of Kroll’s characters was an awful stereotype “Fabrice Fabrice,” maybe Kroll wasn’t that far off from Morgan’s insults). Kroll is funny on The League, but he is not a good stand-up comic at all.
His show will tank just as fast as The Onion Sports Show and Norm Macdonald’s show. I’m really waiting for a new Comedy Central show to last an entire season. Can’t think of a recent one that has.
workaholics, tosh.0, ugly americans, john oliver presents
Since, Tosh.O went on the air in 2009, here’s a list of shows that have been cancelled since: Important Things with Demetri Martin, Jeff Dunham Show, Kröd Mändoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire, Michael & Michael Have Issues, Onion SportsDome, Russell Simmons Presents: Stand-Up at the El Rey, Secret Girlfriend, Sports Show with Norm Macdonald, The Benson Interruption, and This Show Will Get You High.
Assuming Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time and Jon Benjamin Has a Van comes back (a big assumption for the last one), 6 shows survive since 2009 and 10 fail. Hm…..
interesting. when you put it like that — 6 new shows to survive, and 10 to fail…
that’s a better track record than any other network? right?
Sorry, but Nick Kroll possesses a smug sensibility that I just can’t get over. I don’t think he is funny, and I think he’s the least entertaining part of THE LEAGUE.
Nick Kroll is a comic genius. Nice pick up.
Awesome for all three! ‘Specially Kroll!
I heard CC bought a pilot from the EpicMealTime.com dudes…does anyone know if there’s any weight to that or if it’s moving forward??? That would make my day!
Oh My. Keegan? Sounds like a waste. Another mediocre.
Kroll is cool.
So happy for Keegan and Jordan!! Congrats!!!
I hear the Kroll pilot is a riot. Nick, John Levenstein are hysterical. Jenny Slate is a great too. Can’t wait to see this.
ALL of these guys are incredibly talented, driven, and really, REALLY f’in funny. I love ‘em, and can’t wait to see what the do.
I agree with you, but come on dude…
????
Why the f&*k would anyone on earth pretend to be ME? … Even on a Deadline Hollywood comment page, I’d hope that people would shoot a little higher.
Oy. kids today.
I know, right? No respect for a person’s identity.
His makes me laugh. His bits on Reno were amongst the funniest stuff we ever shot, in my opinion. Nicks’ stuff too.
these guys are the real deal.
Nicholas Kroll is as funny as he is Jewish (which is very). Mazel Tov! Word is bond,ya’ll
Both shows sound great! Love Keegan MK! Can’t wait to see them! Good going Comedy Central!!!
Keegan and Jordan are two amazing comedians and I cannot wait to see how amazing their show is!
Please, stop with the word BRILLIANT. He is not brilliant. Steve Martin, Lenny Bruce, Dane Cook these are brilliant. This guy is mediocre. Another example of the crapola.
DJ Nuss
Seems like many of the Principato Young trolls are on here trying to make mediocre out of crapola. Seriously, ever get a look at those guys? Weird.
Kroll is great! As Whoopi G. said, he’s a very funny man. I’m very glad we’ll get to see more of him.
Workaholics, Ugly Americans.
god damn nick kroll is one of those newer shitty comedians. christ he is bad. nothing new nothing good. His comedy is shallow and one dimensional. i cant believe how horrible “The PubLIZity Girls” and “The Ed Hardy Boyz” sound. Im optimistic about the other show even though in the back of my head im sure it will be stupid.
Sadly, this is what passes for “comedy” these years. The days of original wit, intelligent humour, of Emo Phillips — too deep for today’s audiences reared on pap. Chapelle was excellent; been a while since any stand-up-ian actually moved me to amusement. I rather agree with Ryan’s comment: can’t imagine this show going beyond 6 downhill episodes but hey, surprise me. Good luck to all involved; wake me to watch if there’s a season 2.
Since when was Emo Phillips intelligent? Interesting, sure. Nice hair, absolutely. Oy, you angry people. None of you have seen the shows. Internet comments are ruining entertainment content.
The fact that you signed your name “Really” says it all! That is THE HACKIEST EXPPRESSION of the decade, the equivalent of “Don’t Go There.” If Keegan were actually the least bit funny, his career would be a lot further along than doing a sketch show for COMEDY CENTRAL that will be less funny than “Stella”. Keegan is a marginal talent who’s made NO impact on pop culture or comedy. So have fun watching his failed attempt to be on TV again. You’ll be one of 11 people who do. By the way, what’s with his hyphenate name?! Is he an actor, or a married chick?
comedy central now that’s sarcasm. hasn’t been a funny show on since chappelle. keep on rolling out sketch comedy shows with so-so talent. its more like so-so central. what happened to these guys? used to be a place where chances were taken.
Watch Keegan’s Coach Hines on Mad TV, then watch his car commercials from the NBA playoffs, then watch him on stage, then watch him on Reno 911, and then meet him. You’ll like him so much you might kiss him on the mouth.
Peele is equally as talented and kind, tapping into the best Obama impression in the biz, alongside other great bits like Forest Whitaker and Lil Wayne.
Kudos to CC for recognizing these guys. Those that aren’t so sure now will be pleasantly surprised at the results come season premiere time… I guarantee it.
“That particularly holds for anything baked up by the cluelesscrew over at Comedy Central, who in their twenty-five year history have never mounted a single watchable minute of scripted comedy – “South Park” being the sole exception.”
What? Have you not seen Strangers with Candy, or Stella, or the Upright Citizens Brigade, or the Futurama reboot, or Chappelle’s Show, or Dr. Katz, or MST3K, or Reno 911!, or The Sarah Silverman Program, or Michael & Michael Have Issues, among a bunch of others? Even if you don’t like some of those shows, there’s no way you can write them ALL off as unfunny.
what the H? Norm gone, and these clowns take his place!
