EXCLUSIVE: I’m told that town is tantalized by a package circulating with Darren Aronofsky directing Noah, an edgy re-telling of the Noah’s Ark story. Aronofsky wrote a script that is getting a rewrite by John Logan. I’ve heard he wants $130 million to make it and that New Regency is eyeing a co-financing role. Suitors considering stepping up for the other half include Paramount and Fox, as well as Summit, I’ve heard. It was described to me as a big fantasy epic, and an opportunity for Aronofsky to create a world. He’s very passionate about it and wants to make it next film, after dropping out of The Wolverine. Aronofsky’s got more heat on him than ever after directing the spectacularly profitable Black Swan, which grossed $315 million worldwide on a $12 million budget. His move toward Noah comes after Aronofsky recently flirted with Exodus, the 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment-produced telling of the story of Moses, his defiance of the Pharoah and delivery of the Hebrews from enslavement. That script was written by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage. Beyond an ill-advised morphing of the Noah’s Ark story into the Universal spinoff comedy Evan Almighty, nobody has tried to tell the Noah’s Ark story in as ambitious a manner as Aronofsky intends. Will a studio step up to help Aronofsky build this boat on as grand a scale as he desires? Stayed tuned. Aronofsky and Logan are repped by CAA.

Dear Atheists: Relax. it’s a movie.
Aside from all that hoopla, Mr. 8′s comments were on the money.
Aronofsky got lucky with Black Swan.
How a B-Grade horror film got so much acclaim is beyond me, and the thing with Aronofsky is his consistency with Box Office. He doesn’t have a good understanding of it, and his technique is becoming quite boring. He hasn’t grown as a filmmaker whatsoever, and you only need to watch Black Swan & Wrestler back to back to realise that this is a man repeating himself, both in form and story.
In saying this: I think he’s onto a winner here. Noah has the potential to be just as big as Passion, and if it gets off the ground, there is no reason it cannot be.
As much as you hate to hear it, Atheists, there are around 1.5 billion practising Catholics who would ALL give watching the film a serious thought.
Word!
bb
Which merely give credence to the adage, “There’s a sucker born every minute”.
Black Swan is clearly intended as a companion piece to The Wrestler.
I am sure people would have said the same things when he set out to do Black Swan.
Michael Curtiz directed an epic, DeMille-style NOAH’S ARK back in the late silent period, and John Huston did the episode more or less straight, playing Noah himself, as part of his THE BIBLE: IN THE BEGINNING. There was also a failed Broadway musical, TWO BY TWO. So it’s not as if this is untrodden territory, in fact.
Why do I get the sense that the comments are coming from unemployed people in their bathrobes?
Hmm…
I’m employed AND in my bathrobe.
Oy! someone should tell them my client can do it for 25M and DELIVER!
Wait. I think I will. BB
And ironically he looks just like Noah Wyle in that photo. Maybe it’s a hint that this is not a Bible film at all but the best, most random biopic ever of the ER/Falling Skies actor?
Aronofsky + $130 million = BOMB.
Hmm…. here’s an equation I approve of: Mel = Noah. Thoughts?
That is brilliant! The first two animals to board will be beavers… I’ll say no more.
Maybe now his movies won’t have that, I was shot on a set look.
Aronofsky can indeed make an “edgy” version of the Noah story just by sticking to the original biblical source material. The world becomes so evil (think Sodom and Gommorah on a global scale) that the only good man left, Noah, gets chosen by a higher power to be the sole survivor of an extinction-caliber event that wipes out almost all life on the world (or Noah’s perception of the whole world). Then there’s also the bit when Noah gets drunk and naked. Edgy stuff, and perfect Hollywood fodder.
I’m bored already – Let me guess, overly dramatic over directed sequences of Noah and all his problems. Aronofsky needs more time to mature as a filmmaker. He’s overrated.
Love it! I thought “The Wrestler” was one of the best modern film explorations of religion/Christianity.
Aronofsky is undeniably awesome.
one of my favorite filmmakers.
but my reaction to this is just…
meh!
of course, that’s terribly unfair without reading the script.
after all, it’s always about the execution.
but seriously, Mr. Arnonofsky…
I was so looking forward to your Wolverine!
arg!
maybe you could put some claws on Noah…
What a bunch of pre-ejaculators on this thread! All the article said was an “edgy re-telling” of Noah’s Ark and with that little tidbit most have either destined it to epic failure or epic greatness. Aside from a few (like g and hmmmm) most these comments are knee-jerk and biased to the point of ridiculousness!
Relax, wait a while and see what Aronofsky and Logan put together. Then judge if you must.
I’m disappointed that he dropped out of Wolverine. This sounds strange but Aronofsky had touched upon religious/spiritual themes before. I haven’t seen Black Swan but I have enjoyed some of his other movies. Pi, Requiem, Fountain, and the Wrestler were all enjoyable. I’m sure he will do something unique with the Noah idea. I will assume it will be based on an allegorical interpretation rather then a literal one.
Aronofsky’s a HUGE talent, for sure. Gifted shooter. Redundant with his last two outings. Would be great to see him do something with a vast canvas. Not sure I quite get the allure of the Noah story though. Unless I’ve misread the Bible, he’s not the most likable or redeemable of characters. Will be interesting to see what he does.
What’s with all the haters? Atheist or not, the Bible is a bunch of stories. It doesn’t matter whether you believe they happened or not. Aranofsky doing either of Moses or Noah would be cool to see. As a Jew I’d probably rather see Moses than the apocalypse, but I’m buying a ticket to either.
The last time Darren was given a lot of money to make a movie it turned out to be a disaster. His ego totally got in the way. Run for cover!!!!!!!!!!
Wow! I hope its as awesome as Evan Almighty! I want to see an acurate depiction of how some dude gets 2 of every fucking animal in the world on a boat! Then I want to see how the fuck he keeps that boat clean! I have one guinea pig and it shits non-stop.
Have people here forgotten about Passion of the Christ? There is a huge Christian market this film could easily tap into. It’s far from being some obscure subject.
I’m also surprised by the number of atheists dismissing the film outright. I’m atheist myself but I’m looking forward to this take on what I consider to be a fascinating fable, just like I enjoy Greek mythology or Brothers Grimm stories. I think if done right, this has a lot of potential both as a retelling of scripture for Christians and as a fantasy epic for non-Christians, even more so than Passion which was almost entirely aimed at believers.
Of course, all this depends on just how “edgy” we’re talking bout here.
I hope he addresses how Noah wrangled two of every dinosaur.
Maybe it’ll be edgy by showing the innocent babies and children of the “wicked” drowning, while a Voice booms from above, “hey, nothing personal.”
O.K. Wait a minute! What about the unicorns. What?! No unicorns?! Fiction, I say!!
Ha! He could save himself a bundle and film it on site in Kentucky when a bunch of Creationists build their Ark-Park there.
Guys, take it easy on the religious arguments.
This is a about a film that could have the potential to be an epic masterpiece like Ben-Hur, The Ten Commandments or even Lawrence of Arabia.
Whether you believe the story of Noah’s ark to be true or not, what matters is the entertainment potential of the film.
For the past two-three decades, the epic genre was close to nowhere to be found. Luckily it is on the rise again with LOTR, Narnia, etc. If done well, epics can be fantastic.
The only downside in this scenario is that it might be more of psychological story. Which could still be good, but not the grandeur a story of this kind (fiction or not) deserves.
Best. Thread. Ever.
