David Strathairn has been set for a key role in Lincoln by director Steven Spielberg. He’ll play William Seward, Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of State, an outspoken abolitionist and a core member of Lincoln’s wartime cabinet. He joins Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln and Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln. The DreamWorks film has been set to begin production this fall in Virginia for a late 2012 release through Disney’s Touchstone label. Tony Kushner wrote the script based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals and Kathleen Kennedy is producing with Spielberg. Strathairn won an Emmy for HBO’s Temple Grandin. He’s repped by ICM and Ryan Entertainment.

What a STELLAR cast! Extremely excited to see this movie!!
AND with a script by Tony Kushner it will undoubtedly analyze Lincoln’s homosexuality and his fight against AIDS!
Lincoln had AIDS?
Yes, his cabinet aided him tremendously, if you bothered to ready the book.
SERIOUSLY, how dumb are you???
Outstanding group of people, this project has tremendous potential.
Great cast…interesting subject…unlimited budget…now, Steven it is all up to you to deliver.
Who said unlimited budget?
Steven’s budgets satisfy Steven’s desires…maybe, the word ‘unlimited’ is too strong, but rarely does anyone tell Spielberg what he can and cannot do with his films…so, perhaps, it should read a “Steven” budget.
Can someone please explain to me why 65-year-old Sally Field is playing a woman who was in her 40s during the Civil War? In fact MTL died before she even turned 65. Ridiculous.
THANK YOU. I’ve mentioned this before and was howled down by Field fans. Her talent is not in question but she is waaaaaay too old for the part. She had pre-teen kids during Lincolns time in office, what is going on here? Marcia Gay Harden would have been a far more apt piece of casting. In order to look the part Field will have to be nipped & tucked to within an inch of her life, and actors with too much cosmetic surgery look absurd in period pieces (like Nicole Kidman in Australia, we fell about laughing at her frozen/plumped-up features during the first trailer). Yes, she can act, but makeup and talent can only take a performer so far. Lord, I hope they’re not going to use CGI as a half-baked fountain of youth?
Yeah, no one is doubting Field’s talent, but I 100% agree Harden would made a much better choice. It’s definitely going to be Cold Mountain/Australia all over again.
Maybe I’m biased since SF has been past middle age nearly my entire life, and I don’t think I’ll ever not think of her as Mama Gump, haha.
Too bad Elizabeth McGovern can’t act, because I think she also has a great capacity to resemble Lady Lincoln.
Marcia Gay is da bomb.
Because sphe’s an actor! Angela Landsbery played Sinatra’s mother when she was younger than him in Manchurian Candidate
It was actually Laurence Harvey. Lansbury played Harvey’s mother in that film, and she was older than him.
It’s much easier to play older than it is to play younger – why waste the money on uncanny valley CGI a la Red Dragon/X-Men 3/Tron when you could just properly cast from the get-go?
Strathairn has always been the Man. From “Brother From Another Planet” to “Sneakers” or “Good Night And Good Luck”, even “Temple Grandin”… he is always superb.
This has Oscar bait written all over it.
As a history buff, I can’t wait to see this, but I’m not sure that a film about the inner workings of Lincoln’s staff and the debate over abolition between the cabinet will make for riveting family entertainment for the holiday season. At least if it’s competing against The Hobbit.
Obsessed with this casting!
YOU BET YOUR ASS, or would you have preferred “Casablanca” with Ronald Reagan for example?
DDL before assassination, gaunt, bearded, & SF aging badly, sick, depressed, even before the murder, & living till age 63, many years later — it will work. It will be excellent.
if Sally gets this right – and you know she will, then she will have established herself as one of the top actresses of our lifetime. Over 50 years of acting, she must be at least 70 years old. From the Flying Nun to Norma Rae to MTL – quite an arc!
This is going to be a BLOCKBUSTER!
Can’t wait to see it!!!
Wasn’t this originally cast with Liam Neeson and Holly Hunter? What happened? Agree Sally Field is talented but too old for this role.
Excellent casting. Btw, I really recommend the book Team of Rivals, which the movie is based upon. It’s a very good read.
when I think of DDl in this role all I can picture is Daniel Plainview. that performance still haunts me in the best way possible
This movie is going to need some huge set-piece battle scenes; two at least, maybe three.
Gettysburg is already so well known, and probably the only major battle non-buffs could name. I hope they don’t film it. Instead I hope they focus on some of the evil savagery of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania. Those horrific, gory battles could rival anything from Saving Private Ryan.
But what this movie REALLY needs to do is not be an unwatchable, insulting, self-righteous BORE like Gods & Generals.
I wonder who will play Mrs. Seward?
