EXCLUSIVE: A little over a week ago, Deadline revealed that Universal Pictures had made a deal for another comedy that Bridesmaids director Paul Feig would write, helm and produce with Judd Apatow. There was no title and the plot was under wraps. I’ve learned a little bit more. The unconventional love story is about a guy who becomes obsessed with a woman. The template for the guy is Jon Hamm, and the gal is Melissa McCarthy. While I’m cautioned there are no negotiations and it is all very early, it makes perfect sense that both of these thesps will be courted to star in this Feig-directed comedy. Mad Men‘s Hamm played a fabulously insensitive douchebag playboy in Bridesmaids. As for Mike & Molly star McCarthy, she stole every scene she was in, no easy feat in that strong ensemble cast. If Universal and Apatow aren’t figuring out ways to build comedies around McCarthy, they’re crazy.

I’m so tired of the movies where Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Rob Schneider, etc. are with hot women. I’ll be first in line to buy a ticket to this movie. McCarthy & Hamm will be comedy gold!
I’m with you 110%!!!!
I remember Melissa from the Groundlings and even back then, everyone saw that spark that she was going places = comedy gold.
Sounds disturbingly like a ripoff…err…remake of Percy Adlon’s marvelous SUGARBABY with Marianne Sagebrecht, which CBS already remade for TV with Ricki Lake as BABYCAKES. Really hoping there’s more to it than that.
This sounds awesome! I’d see anything with Hamm. I hope this gets made.
sugarbaby? r u the only person who has ever heard of that movie?
Sugarbaby got a lot of buzz back in the day for the “breakthrough” idea that a gorgeous man might fall for a woman who wasn’t model thin. Two decades later, Hollywood is as sexist and immature as ever and still thinks, “Wow, what a surprise twist!”
Clarification: Sugarbaby (Zuckerbaby) was a German film. A lot of the press centered around the depressing idea that Hollywood wouldn’t have even thought to make such a film. Ricki Lake was also romanced by a hot guy on China Beach. Same depressing theme: oh how unusual, what a surprise, blah, blah, blah…
Yet how many movies/TV shows have we been subjected to where guys who look like the Michelin Man on a week-long-bender get hot women?
Personally I think wih these two talents it could be funny. Maybe you need to watch some Lifetime or Oprah. You gals all like that right?
I’ve seen it too. Sagebrecht was excellent. She had a certain sensuality that niether Ricki Lake nor Melissa McCarthy have. Maybe it’s a European thing where large women can be considered sexual beings without it being a joke.
She was also great in Baghadad Cafe and Rosalie Goes Shopping. I loved her.
How about “Too Beautiful For You” with Depardieu? It think it falls into the same category. In that movie he’s married to the heavenly Carole Bouquet (the face of Chanel for a while) only to fall for his plain, and plump (and older, I believe) secretary.
Melissa McCarthy = NOT funny.
Please name a movie and actress you do find funny so I can tell what type of person doesn’t find Bridesmaids at least somewhat amusing?
No, that’s okay. Just know that there are a few of us out there who found the movie terribly unfunny and downright painful to sit through.
I also though last year’s most lauded film, INCEPTION, was a giant piece of shit, so take everything I say with a grain of salt…if that.
I was surprised how long it took Bridesmaid to get rolling with the funny. I didn’t find it ground breaking comedy for women although there were some funny gags and moments. I agree with you re Inception… script felt so pushed. Its success at the box office doesn’t translate to me a successful story. I was bored.
agreed on both counts.
How about a normal person? Since Bridesmaids is quite obviously NOT funny.
Shallow Hal 2?
This sounds terrific! What a pairing! McCarthy has moxie! And Hamm, well va-va-voom. Very exciting. Michael when you’re in the valley (who goes there anymore?) look me up. We’ll dine at Ca Del Sole. Chao
Neil
Sounds like a typical, drunken Saturday night for me.
Ha! You rock.
Neither of their characters in Bridesmaids were funny. McCarthy’s character started off well but was got extremely grating not long after and Hamm was just playing a modern day version of Don Draper like he always does. I thought Maya Rudolph was the best. Someone give her a lead role, please.
Agreed — Hamm’s character was so cartoonish he undercut the rest of the film. McCarthy was funny in small doses but the movie suffered from a serious overdose of her hammy shtick. A feature built around them sounds like a truly dreadful idea.
Love Love Love Melissa McCarthy, have since Gilmore Girls. I will not watch Mike and Molly but I will see her in another movie comedy.
Here’s a freebee: pair McCarthy and Galifanakis as the soon-to-be-married couple for a Hangover 3 / Bridesmaids 2 crossover movie.
You’re welcome Craig…
I’ve been a fan of McCarthy’s since Gilmore Girls. She was absolutely hilarious in Bridesmaids and stole every scene she was in. It would be crazy not to give this woman a leading role. Let’s hope this happens.
What if it was the other way around? Hamm was obsessed with McCarthy? Now that would be something different.
Comedy’s new dynamic duo? Nice to see McCarthy getting contemplated for leads…she’s definitely a scene-stealer!
