Does Google’s search engine favor its own businesses over its rivals’? Looks like we may find out soon. Google confirmed today in a blog post that the Federal Trade Commission ”has begun a review of our business.” The company says it’s “still unclear exactly what the FTC’s concerns are.” But critics have long questioned what goes into the Google search algorithms that millions of people use to help decide where to shop, what news to read, which videos to watch, and what Web services to use. California, New York, Ohio and Texas also are investigating Google, as are antitrust officials in Europe. Google says that it’s “committed to giving you choices, ensuring that businesses can grow and create jobs, and, ultimately, fostering an Internet that benefits us all.” But you can be sure that the FTC didn’t take on Google just for kicks. Get ready for a long, potentially brutal, and probably fascinating test of wills.
