EXCLUSIVE: Evolution Entertainment partners Mark Burg and Oren Koules are splitting after 12 years. Burg has purchased the 50% of the management/production company owned by Koules. Burg has reconstituted the company and named former CAA agent-turned-producer Michael Menchel its new president.
This brings to an end a partnership that achieved the dream of every boutique management/production company. When these guys got through Evolution’s Gregg Hoffman the script for Saw from Leigh Whannell and James Wan, they put themselves at risk personally to come up with the money to buy it and to cover the $1.2 million budget themselves. They made a licensing deal with Lionsgate but were left owning a film that grossed $103 million worldwide. They continued in that fashion on six sequels, most of which were low budget, with the last costing around $20 million. The cumulative worldwide gross of the series reached $870 million, and Burg and Koules made a fortune. Some of it they parlayed into other fright films under their Twisted Pictures banner, with many of the films directed and populated by clients of the management company. Their client stable includes Charlie Sheen.
“It’s been a great 12 years,” Koules said, “but my interests lie outside the responsibilities of the management business. I will continue my day-to-day focus on all Saw-related projects, and I wish Mark the very best with Evolution.”
As for Menchel, he started in the CAA mailroom and spent 23 years there before moving to Mike Ovitz’s AMG with his star client Robin Williams. It was that move that spurred CAA partners to boycott their former boss Ovitz, which contributed to his demise. Menchel has since been an indie producer on such flms as One Chance, Escape and Cotton. He’ll be able to use his experience in dealmaking and producing with Evolution’s production business and client stable.
“Evolution is poised for a huge leap forward,” Menchel said. “I look forward to building on the assets already in place and guide it to the next level. I’m proud to take the wheel.”
Said Burg: “Mike has the keys to the car, and we love the way he drives.”

There would be no Evolution or Twisted or SAW without GREG HOFFMAN. He is the one who built that franchise, found the project, etc. They rode his coattails.
Respect the dead.
gregg hoffman remains incredibly respected at this company. rarely a day goes by that his name is not mentioned.
yup, RIP gregg.
Does that cover all of the NHL money Koules blew owning part of the Tampa Bay Lightning for 3 seconds?
Everyone who knows Mike Menchel loves him. That’s why his nickname is “mench”. He’s a total mensch and will have great success and extraordinary good will…
This is an absolutely brilliant and classy move by Mark Burg. In a business of sharks and sinners, Mike Menchel’s reputation and track record is one of the best. Congratulations! Wishing you much well-deserved success.
mike menchel deserves all the best. he’s always been one of the good ones.
Totally agree! Mark is a good guy, and Gregg a great guy who left us far too early. Best of luck in the new venture!
Great move. As a client of Brad Kaplan’s for 6 years, I can only say I love the guy, he kicks ass for me. They are a really cool group. I’m not going anywhere.
Mark is a class act. We shared many clients when I was an agent & always had fun & made lots of money. I think Michael is a wonderful choice to run the company. Good luck guys.
This is an educated opinion so I feel I speak intelligently on the subject with great confidence…. Koules is a douche.
I’ve shot pool with both Mench and Burg … can’t decide who was a better player … so who gets the Scott/Leary table with the steel mesh pockets?
we are ALL loving our new mench!!! burg makes smart moves!
So when does Saw 12 come out?
Congrats Mench! This is a win/win. Mike is a class act as is everyone I’ve come into contact with at Evolution.
I knew Mike Menchell in high school, many moons ago. Not well; a friend of a friend. When I moved to Hollywood and started calling anyone I possibly knew, who could possibly give me a hand, most people never responded. The way most people still don’t. Mike on the other hand, had me up to C.A.A., introduced me to his then boss, Todd Smith, and the two of them couldn’t have been more helpful. I never forgot that. He deserves every inch of his success.
rack ‘em
I’ve heard snippets, but tell us more…
Loved working with Burg. Outside Sheen damage control mode, a straight shooter who knows the difference between what he does and doesn’t know: a rare and valuable gift in this town. Menchel gave great advice at AMG, so hope they really click.
menchel is a nice guy with not one guy…he’s been out of the business for years..why not hire swifty lazar?
who’s your “guy”, swifty? name names. or, maybe not; this site may be rated PG.
what a clever comment, and clever boy you are; also, you’re so very prescient — swifty’s their new trainee, specializing in messenger-management. so they have it all now!!!
Good riddance to bad rubbish
When I first got to LA Mike gave me the only good advice I’ve ever heard: “Think about what you want and plan on spending the next 25 years getting it.” I wish him every success.
It’s about time someone recognized the true value of Mike Menchel. He is the best! His character, creativity, commitment and credibility are second to none. Great move for Evolution. Menchel is adored and loved. We are thrilled for him. Go Menchel! Xxx
