EXCLUSIVE: Rise of the Planet of the Apes isn’t the only case where a film division at 20th Century Fox is monkeying around with a primate picture. Fox Animation has set the team of Christian Magalhaes & Bob Snow to write a modern day twist on the King Kong story. It will be animated, and will tell the story from the vantage point of the ape. It’s an interesting take on the material, because let’s face it, Kong got a bum deal and had no way to verbally complain about it. It is based on a story by Mike Weber, who’ll also produce.
Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps will produce with Ted Field’s Radar Pictures. Magalhaes & Snow’s recent spec script Murder of a Cat made the Black List and is in the process of being set up. Gersh and Madhouse rep the scribes.

Just what the world needs, a cuddly, cute King Kong with most likely a happy ending.
Please let sleeping apes lie.
Note to producers: Peter Jackson’s KING KONG sucked. No one is going to see this.
Actually it was pretty good, a little long, but well made and true to the story of the original. Both critical and box office numbers support this.
Go Christian and Bob!!
Combine “Planet of the Apes” and “King Kong” into one film…while reducing costs and repurposing assets…and, follow the Predator ‘franchise’, but this time have the aliens fighting the apes.
“Predator/Alien versus Kong and the seven little Apes.
These guys are gonna be huge. I read every blacklist script and Murder of a Cat was in my top three.
MURDER OF A CAT was one of my favorites on last year’s Black List – it’s great to see young writers breaking through into paid work, especially in the current climate. Good for them.
Sounds like they’re taking Mark Jacobson’s approach. His novel, Gojiro, was basically Godzilla from the monster’s point of view.
Yep, five will get you ten that the big monkey lives at the end of the story. No way, no how will Fox invest in a property without the slightest prospect of a sequel.
Peter Jackson’s definitive version will be a tough act to follow.
Peter Jackson’s king Kong was the best ….period
We live in the library of babel. Look it up.
YAY! I saw Bob’s short film Bunny at Tribecca Film Fest and it rocked!
Read MURDER OF A CAT. Script should be good.
Christian!!Congrats … too good yar!! Conquer your world!! G
I like realistic animation for a movie like king kong .he’s gotta look real and scary and more furious and cool looking with a mountain of mega muscles.A furious reptile killer to the death.
“King Kong” (1933) is my all-time favorite movie. I always thought it strange that the great ape was never formally entitled “King” Kong, using both words together, throughout that flick. Then I saw it in Thailand, in Thai, I soon realized that when the native chief (Noble Johnson) calls the big gorilla to the wall to pick up Ann Darrow (Fay Wray), he twice refers to the beast as Rama Kong before the last gongs are sounded. Rama is Thai for King. Thus my blog and other cyberspace handles. If Fox animates another version of the King (not Elvis!), it better be good, or I’ll train my cockapoo (Jewels) to bite Rupert Murdoch on the ass or low hanging parts.
