Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser, William H. Macy and Craig Robinson are in talks to star in Freaky Deaky, the Charlie Matthau-directed adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel. Shooting starts June 27 in Detroit. The novel has caught the eye of numerous filmmakers over the years including Quentin Tarantino, but the premise — about 60s radicals who try to use their bomb-making skills to become capitalists in the 70s — was a bit of a problem because the book was set in the late 80s. Matthau wrote the script, and had a breakthrough when Leonard suggested setting it right at the time the bombers decided to turn their skills to make money, which meant putting the drama in 1974. Dillon plays Chris Mankowski, a Vietnam vet who is on the Detroit police bomb squad; Fraser plays Skip, the former 60s radical who becomes a Hollywood demolition guy; Macy (who signed on late last year) plays an alcoholic playboy millionaire who’s threatened by Skip and his girlfriend that he’ll have his mansion blown up if he doesn’t pay $3 mlllion; and Robinson plays a former Black Panther also looking to cash in.
The film is being financed by Eyde Studios. Matthau is producing and Leonard is exec producing with Donald Zuckerman, Michael Meltzer, Robert Cantrell, Steven M. Berez, Tom Ortenberg, along with George, Lou and Nathaniel Eyde and Lee Greenberg. Talks are underway with domestic distributors, and Nicolas Chartier’s Voltage has been selling foreign territories.

So is this with or without film credits. The word about town is that all the money jobs went away?
Secondly, are they hiring local workers.
Other than being Walter’s son, what has this guy done?
Where have you been? Check out “The Grass Harp” ( written by Truman Capote)which Charlie Matthau directed. You won’t make that stupid comment after seeing it. Who are you to judge?
Loving the cast of diverse actors here. The premise sounds odd but in the long run that could be a great thing. I’m definitely gonna see it just cause the cast.
WOW! Loved the book. Can’t wait for it to be released. The casting could not be better. I am sure Charlie Matthau is capable of making this film worthy of the best seller.
Freaky Deaky sounds like it will be terrific!! I personally loved the “Grass Harp” and am looking forward to seeing another film from Charlie Matthau!
after reading Freaky Deaky (the book) And, having the opportunity to read Charlie Matthau’s adaptation, I think this will be a wonderful, funny, exciting & thrilling film to see with a fantastic cast
Should’t the cast be younger if they moved the story to 1974? The characters were radicals in the late 60s. This cast sounds like they left the story in the 80s.
Charlie is an amazing director/filmmaker. It is no surprise that he’s capable of working out the cinematic angles of Elmore’s story. Can hardly wait to see this film!
WHAT HAS THIS GUY DONE?? He has put together a huge BIG NAME cast. Rumor has it that John Travolta is also on board. That’s a very impressive cast. If they are on board and have read the sciot, it will be great. Charles Matthau will direct this to be a top film of 2011. Can’t wait to see it. Charles will be behind the camera what his dad was in front if the camera…GREAT!!
That’s the one with the fast talking low level gangsters in Detroit, right?
I kid. Leonard is great fun to read and frequently great sauce material for movies.
Freaky Deaky goes right up there with Glitz, Killshot and Get Shorty as Leonard’s top crime novels. In fact it may be FD that had a pivotal episode ‘borrowed’ by Lethal Weapon 2. The thing about Leonard is you really have to ‘get’ his beat – Get Shorty did it, Glitz almost did it, Killshot missed the mark. Jackie Brown and Out of Sight were also from Leonard books. Hope its a good job – with Leonard when you miss you miss by a mile. He gives great read but doesnt always translate.
Interesting cast. Nice to see Fraser doing something outside the realm of kid flicks. I’ll watch anything Macy’s in, Dillon’s solid, and Robinson’s casting says a lot about the planned tone, which is probably about right with the book.
Read this back in the late 80s and thought it was a great book, probably one of Leonard’s best, because the plot is so loose and the characters well-drawn (I don’t always think that about Leonard – I think he’s hit and miss, honestly, though I still like a lot of his stuff).
Sorry Charlie, not a personal attack, just a keen observation.
Sounds like every other Leonard novel, especially the part about a millionaire being blackmailed (Gene Hackman filled that role in Get Shorty, Albert Brooks filled that role in Out Of Sight, there was a real estate guy blackmailed in KillShot). And of course Leonard’s requisite stereotyped Black Man to be the villain. Has anyone noticed how wildly overrated and repetitive Leonard is?
They’re doing some filming in Detroit tight now. I’m looking to get an extra role. The cast has changed from the initial post.
