EXCLUSIVE: The George Clooney-directed The Ides of March will open the Venice Film Festival on Aug. 31, I’m told. The film, adapted from Beau Willimon’s play Farragut North, stars Clooney as a presidential candidate, Ryan Gosling as a head of media and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as a campaign manager. Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood also star. The drama takes place during the Ohio primary for the Democratic nomination. It’s extremely topical, given the recent resignation of Congressman Anthony Weiner for sending photos of his package to online “sexting” partners. The Ides of March involves similar scandalous activities. Clooney, who retreats to a vacation home in Lake Como in Italy, has had several of his films play at the festival. They include Intolerable Cruelty, The Man Who Stared at Goats, and the Steven Soderbergh-directed Out of Sight. Sony Pictures will distribute the film in fall.

That’s the thing about writing a political movie that deals with a sex scandal: It’s ALWAYS topical.
good luck george 7
Clooney seems out of touch with the times. He seems like a nice guy. He’s not crazy. He’s not an activist. I’ve never heard him say anything bad about anybody. He seems, almost, old-Hollywood. While it’s great having this guy around, can his persona drum up the kind of passion among ticket-buyers to score a big hit?
Clooney’s stuff is always worth a watch, my disappointment with The American notwithstanding. Cast is top-notch, and you can never go wrong with a political thriller. Clooney can get my dough anytime.
I agree with you on all points. Great cast, too. Looking forward to this film.
Why do you say George Clooney is not an activist?
In Darfur, Clooney is an activist first, then actor

I saw the fragment, the film must be a real masterpiece!!
these are hot topics… George is very handsome, as always!
I’ll always watch a Clooney-directed film (despite the mis-step of Leatherheads). Good Night And Good Luck was hands down the best film of 2004 – yes, better than Brokeback Mountain and Crash.
The cast was much better when it was sent out with Leo and Hanks attached… now that was a damn good read. Nothing against Gosling and Hoffman, but come on… it’s Leo and Tom!
Oh thank god a new film by George cloudy
Really my god stop what your doing man why people think your a big movie star I don’t know but stop doing these crappymovies for good sakes and go back to the movies where you were a cool dude
I don’t know how much they’ve changed the story from the original play but the scandal didn’t really go around sex than a upcoming political figure being taken down for his loyalty. George’s character isn’t even seen at all in the play which makes me wonder how much was changed from Beau’s play.
