EXCLUSIVE: Bracing for its race against Relativity Media on rival Snow White films, Universal Pictures has hired Hossein Amini to do a rewrite of Snow White and the Huntsman, the Rupert Sanders-directed film that stars Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth. Evan Spiliotopoulos wrote the most recent draft. Amini scripted Drive, the Nicolas Winding Refn-directed film that just debuted in Cannes, and he also rewrote the Keanu Reeves-starrer 47 Ronin, which director Carl Rinsch is directing for Universal.
Universal and Relativity have been playing a game of can you top this in terms of release dates. Universal moved up its Snow White film from late 2012 to a June 1 date, which put it a month ahead of Relativity’s Snow White film, the one that stars Julia Roberts, Lily Collins and Armie Hammer, with Tarsem Singh directing. Then, Relativity Media trumped Universal by setting a March 16, 2012 release. It has created bad blood between the studio and Ryan Kavanaugh, but that is how it stands at the moment. Hossein is repped by WME.

Smartest move Uni has made so far– rewriting it. No wonder Viggo ran far away from it.
Yes, good idea. I couldn’t get past the first fifteen pages.
Someone liked the original script. It started a bidding war at several major studios. An Academy Award winning writer rewriting can’t hurt.
He never won an Academy Award.
True, he was merely nominated for one. Still not bad.
By all accounts, it started a bidding war because the writer had the completed script in hand at the same time the Alice induced “we’ve got to get something similar out there to cash-in” frenzy hit the studios. The original writer hit the damn lottery on this one, and good for him, it happens to so few writers in Hollywood. Nevertheless, it’s not a measure of the merit of the script though, and I think Universal has figured that out, which is what has prompted the need for a re-write. This is a lesson to struggling writers though. Watch for emerging genre trends and get your spec script ready early, and you too can possibly get a 7-figure spec sale when the suits get lathered up about another studio’s big BO success and start buying before they analyze the reason behind the success. Gotta love impulse buyers!!
The original script started a bidding war because suddenly the studios thought every fairy tale remake would do gangbusters thanks to Alice.
lol, the only people even bothering to read this script are robert pattinson fans who hate kristen stewart and are just waiting for her to fall on her face on this project. They’ve distributed it amongst themselves while Stewart’s own fans haven’t even bothered to read it yet.
wow, do you know juvenileyou sound? this is why many sane people think the twilight fans are screwed in the head. good job adding more proof of that.
hehe, you know a lot about the fandom. I bet you’re one of the “rob pattinson fans”. Oh, and im a Kstew fan and i’ve read the script
I’m a big Kristen fan and I know several members of a large KStew livejournal community that thought the script was lackluster!!
Not liking the original script had nothing to do with Robert or wanting her to fall on her face.
Thank you! I didn’t enjoy the original SWATH script. I have always been excited about the project in large part due to the cast..not the script. So I’m very excited to see that rewrites are in the works.
I consider myself to be a fan of Kristen Stewart and I have read the script, and I know of many other Kristen Stewart fans who have read the script.
what?.That doesnt even make sense.
thats not true. many kristen fans have read the script. i like both rob and kristen, and i dont want to see either one of them “fall on their faces.” stop generalizing what you read on blogs.
ok, we get it
these types of movies have nothing to do with storytelling or anything to do with that
it’s all about the KStew (LOL) or the other misc vampire people who need work
Sounds like a good idea. A strong script can do wonders with this cast. Charlize Theron in full royal makeup won’t hurt either.
Agreed. If the script is strong enough, this cast will make it fly. Now it looks like the script WILL be strong enough, Hossein Amini is a remarkably talented writer who probably wouldn’t attach his name to a hopeless script, not to mention most of the first script-reactions were positive to begin with…I mean the studio probably didn’t think “hey, let’s pay 1,5M for this mediocre screenplay’…
Yeah — he certainly wouldn’t attach to a hopeless script… Like say a reboot of a major franchise like Jack Ryan. Oh wait — he’s the one that wrote a script so hopeless that they had to start from scratch. It’s like Duhhhrrrr… Which round hole does the round piece go in? Anyone who chokes that bad is no one that inspires confidence.
how do you define a “hopeless script”?
Great writer and a very nice person. Hope David Lonner still works with or manages him.
Speak for yourself! Many of her fans have read this script. Thanks for outing yourself as robsessed Kristen hater.
I am Kristen fan and i DID bother to read it. I figure they will change the romance into a love triangle now that Hemsworth is in the picture. I do think a re write will be nice, adds suspense for everyone wince we won’t have the script.
Yeah they will change it too a love triangle which quite frankly Kristen has already been there done that. I love her but i don’t know why she choose this as her next project. I think she needs a new agency if this is the best they can get for her.
I can’t imagine rewrites are a good thing at this point in the game.
have to say im kinda disappointed in universal’s version of snow white. according to the usa today, they aren’t even going to cast little people actors as the dwarfs. they are just going to use average-height actors. there aren’t that many little people in movies, it seems wrong to intentionally take roles away from them and use special effects instead.
Tell that to Peter Jackson.
I think “lol” was making more of a political statement, irrelevant to how the movie will actually turn out. But you’re right, the Dwarfs in LOTR were seamless.
@same, i didn’t say they won’t turn out great looking. i was talking about how they won’t be using actual little actors. there are many great little actors out there that could be used. like i said they don’t get a whole lot of opportuinity to star in movies.
You’re right. There aren’t a lot of little people actors, but since the Relativity version just cast 7 of the most well known little people actors, Universal doesn’t have much choice.
I knew his brother when he was at the AFI. I lost touch with him and never had the pleasure of meeting Hossein but I remain a big fan of his work, and I am rooting for him.
Meh. Dump Hemsworth, who is tied up the Avengers, and start shooting ASAP. Tarsem will be coming off the bomb of the Immortals. Relativity will cave once Uni starts filming.
HA! You’re funny.
It’s amazing that one can sell a script for millions of dollars then it gets rewritten multiple times.
A strange business.
It was bought for the concept/story IMO.
sounds like a way for universal to now delay the release back to a later date, maybe back to December
What will relativity do then, change their release date to summer?
Both of these movies are a mistake and will not be like Alice in wonderland, but like beastly and red riding hood, and other dumb fairy tale remakes. Load up on fairy tales for 2012, after superhero remakes in 2011
Where have original ideas gone?
I agree that all the studios are hoping for an Alice in Wonderland type movie, but it’s not going to happen. That movie captured everyone’s interest because it was a Burton/Depp collaboration in the fantasy genre. Those two have a following that borders on blind trust by the public when they’re doing what they do best. No one associated with the two Snow White projects, or any of the fairy tale remakes, inspire that kind of confidence or following from the public.
I also find it ironic that this script is getting re-writes now, and after the project was originally hailed as the “best Snow White” because the spec script was the largest sale to date for a spec. And if the re-writes are to add a love triangle, then isn’t it just Twilight 2.0? Doesn’t exactly give you a warm fuzzy about the project.
The love triangle is only one aspect of twilight and would only be one aspect of SWATH. Besides that, the movies are nothing alike. So no, it wouldn’t Twilight 2.0…
Better get writing, quickly.
This version of Snow White will have same result of Red Riding Hood. Julia Roberts version is much better and Tarsem is a genius. What is Universal thinking? Pay the actors off and get out now!!
Lol, Jack. You gotta me kidding me. SWATH isn’t going anywhere, it’s in a much better position than that “Unnamed Snow White Movie”. How much is Ryan Kavanaugh paying you?
The Brothers Grimm: Snow White (that’s the name of that “unnamed” Snow White) has a lot going for it. For one, it starts filming NEXT week. It’s got a brilliant cast and an interesting concept. It also has managed to cast some of the best little people actors in the business, while this Universal version is back to square one.
Actually, it is formerly known as The Brothers Grimm: SW. As of now it is unnamed. Like on the early promo poster, it’s called the “Unnamed Snow White project”. Sure, the filming starts next week but it has much LESS time between the start of filming and the theatrical release, they are backed into a corner by Uni’s last move. Universal’s SWATH has a brilliant cast(much more so IMO) and an interesting concept. They have managed to cast all their 8 Dwarf actors whom will be seamlessly transformed, just as the actors in LOTR were over 10 years ago. How is SWATH on square one? What makes you think that? Time to wake up.
Just like Jack, you sound like you are on Ryan Kavanaugh’s pay roll with that ridiculously bias post. Or do you have stock shares in Relativity? That might make sense…
it can either go really well, or really bad. honestly both snow white films are sandwiched in between some major competition.
Tarsem is very uneven, visually interesting but empty. Immortals doesn’t look much better.
Have to agree about Immortals. Let’s wait till the Comic Con reactions to it. Not encouraging so far.
Smart move indeed. One of the worst specs ever, it was unreadable. Shame that that whats his face is going to get credit on what’s probably going to turn out as a page one rewrite and far better than the original trash script.
Nice guy maybe, but I HATED the work he did on 47 ronin. thankfully they brought the original writer back on set to fix the script.
all this chatter and clamor for KStew (what script did she read, blah blah) and other sorts of steaming stew only confirms:
the original is truly the best iteration, and all the rest is Hollywood lubed stroking
Nick Marston at Curtis Brown in the UK also reps – and discovered- Hos- Go CB!
Rewrites for a film that’s already in pre-production and is set for release in less than a year is always a good sign.
rupert sanders did xbox games trailers they were bang on hard core cant wait for swath halo 3 xmen they looked great so cant wait to see what he brings question why is everything on kristens shoulders if the film does bad they will blame her but if film does good they will give credit to anyone but her i dont get it i think kristen stewart is hot and a good actress the film will be awesome because of the story its a nice dark twist on a classic
hey go kristi…
Good to see a fellow Persian (an Academy Award nominee for best screenplay) having a writing career in Hollywood.
Barikallah Aghaee Amini!
Someone at Universal must be brave (or crazy) to have cast Kristen Stewart in this role. The last three of her movies released have all tried to cash in on the Twilight fame but the three have combined total losses of over $30 Mil since the distributors of all three backed out due to lack of interest or whatever reason. In any other profession she would have been fired and would have been damn lucky to be offered another job. whatever Universal exec who hired her for this project will be praying for their job come June since she is pretty much the only draw for the teenage fans they hope to pull in.
Why are you making stuff up? $30 mil, what!? Who’s ass did you pull that out of? What do you have against Kristen Stewart? None of those movies tried to “cash” in on the Twilight fame. If you knew what you were talking about(or weren’t deliberately lying) then you would know she had already filmed 2 of them and the 3rd, she was already cast in BEFORE Twilight even hit theaters and was still mostly unknown. They were very small, Rated-R, art-house, indie movies that 99% of Twilight fans have no interest in anyway. Saying they didn’t do well because of Kristen is unfair and ignorant, they likely wouldn’t have even got a theatrical release with out her. You just can NOT compare those movies to SWATH, it is worlds apart. Yet, that is exactly what you just tried to do…
Also, the distributors didn’t “back out”, they went as planned. Two of the movies opened on less than 10 screens, as planned, they didn’t catch and weren’t expected to. Happens all the time to small indie movies with zero advertising. As for The Runaways, it was supposed to get a wide release where it easily could have made 20+ mil and turned a decent profit. But at the last second, one of the distribution company’s co-owners swapped the wide release to a limited, against the wishes of his partner, the other co-owner(who later remarked that the whole distribution was botched and he was very angry about it). This literally cause the company to split from the inside out and it dissolved in a matter of weeks. The movie still pulled in 10+ mil on combined theater and dvd/blu-ray sales. Not bad for being screwed over and only opening on 200 screens.
Still, in all 3 of these movies Kristen was critically praise. So, even though you are completely off the mark, maybe you are looking at it the wrong way?
Julia versus Charlize. Winner Julia. Liam Hemsworth versus Armie Hammer. WInner Armie. Lily Collins versus Kristen Stewart. HUGE WINNER LILY. Universal is in big trouble, especially coming out later. Jeff K and Peter should have some guts and shelf this. Not to mention that it is so wrong to not cast real little people. Reverse discrimination. Tarsem has 7 amazing actors for the dwarfs that are little people.
ANd I meant Armie is better than Chris and Liam Hemsworth combined.
Thanks for your comment. Now go back to answering Ryan’s phone.
Whatever Ryan is paying you, it’s way too much because you are horrible at hiding your agenda. Reverse discrimination? What the hell are you talking about? Please just stfu already.
just saying to cast a normal person as Universal is doing to play a dwarf is uncool. Tarsem cast real little people. There are many amazing little people that act and would kill for this opportunity. then they give the roles to normal actors and use effects to make them little. I feel it is wrong. Has nothing to do with Ryan and I don’t work in your business i just love movies
Jack, Dwarfs in the fantasy genre are NOT little people. They are a different species/race entirely of shorter, stouter humanoids. Little people are humans, mythical Dwarfs are not humans. So whatever means they use to recreate these Dwarfs is for them to decide. Peter Jackson didn’t use any little people for his Hobbits or Dwarfs in making LOTR and his final product turned out amazing.
Basically, your posts, up until this last one, read like blatant propaganda against Universal in favor of Relativity. You don’t sound like a casual fan, you sound like Relativity is paying you to say these things. It’s very annoying.
Jack Parks, speaks the truth. The Relativity version has better actors, a better script, and is also coming out first. It’s the one that will be successful. And let’s not forget, even if Lily is lesser known than Stewart, Julia Roberts is undoubtedly a HUGE box office draw.
I have a feeling this Universal Snow White will end up pushing back it’s release date (if it even ends up filming the movie).
