The toon is set for release on June 22, 2012. Unlike Disney animation, Pixar in its first 12 films has never had a strong female heroine on her own. This latest is the tale of a warrior princess from Scotland who eschews royalty to become an archer. Her choice puts her family and kingdom in peril:
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Short. Simple. Effective.
Eve and Elastigirl were VERY strong female heroines.
Hmmm, this looks like an AWFUL Pixar film…
Bingo, RJ. This is a miss.
The amount of haters on this board is UNREAL! Get a fucking life people.
You have every right to express your bad taste. I think the trailer looks gorgeous.
Ratatouille was a crap film, but the Pixar sycophants ate it up all the way to an Oscar. Meet The Robinsons was a far better animated film, but was under the passe Disney banner. Cars 2 is just an anti “big oil” film and an example of Pixar TOTALLY whoring out with 100s of new characters and 350 new toys and games. New if you consider Cars 2 Operation and Monopoly or Mater with different badging.
Pixar is a kick ass outfit full of creativity and stories, but sometimes the emperor is nude…
Did Reese Witherspoon quit this film because they fired the female creator, writer, and director of this film, Brenda Chapman?
I thought Pixar got rid of her because some bright spark finally realized the rest of the voice cast is all U.K & she would of clashed horribly.
I’d have trouble thinking of a worse actor than Witherspoon for a character like this. I’m sooooooooo glad to see her out and Kelly Macdonald in. Been a fan of hers since Trainspotting and when I think Scottish female, that’s who immediately comes to mind. Can’t wait!
Early days, but that looks like a buy-the-numbers teaser. None of the charm of earlier Pixar movies.
My god that was a huge snooze.
Only a woman would realize that Pixar has never made an animated film without a ‘strong female heroine’. And only a woman would care.
….Double negative…. I don’t understand what point you are trying to make…
Stay classy, Allen.
You are a fucking moron.
Actually, I agree with Allen. I’ve seen every Pixar movie except for the Cars films and the thought of how many female heroines were in the movies never entered my mind. I simply judged them based on the quality of the films, not the female body count.
Until this post, I’d never heard anyone mention a lack of female leads in the Pixar films. Probably because, as Allen states, only a woman would realize that, much less care.
Of course anyone who knows anything about Nikki knows that she is a Wellesely College graduate, so it should come as no surprise that she often takes a feminist point of view in life and in her writings. Her blog, her prerogative, I suppose.
The solution is simple: if enough women care about these sorts of things, then they should make movies starring women themselves instead of snarking about other creative types who don’t.
You, Kitty, should really learn how to express your opinion more intelligently. When you write the way you do, no one takes you seriously. Clearly, you’re not a Wellesley College graduate.
“The solution is simple: if enough women care about these sorts of things, then they should make movies starring women themselves instead of snarking about other creative types who don’t.”
Like Brenda Chapman tried to, you mean? Gee, look how well that turned out for her. You really have no idea how difficult it is for women in animation. Pixar has yet to have a female director, since Chapman was fired and now is credited only as co-director. Did you know she was the first women to ever direct an animated film ever? She was also head of story for The Lion King, which is still considered one of Disney’s crowning films, so I suspect there is more than just inadequacy that led to her being fired. Pixar is nowhere near as women friendly as Dreamworks and Disney are, but as for your ‘go make other movies for other companies then’ schpiel, not everyone wants to work on ‘Mars Needs Moms” or whatever nonsense Disney’s spewing out these days. Dreamworks is doing better it seems, How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda 1 & 2 actually earned my respect, but their previous track record is still pretty bad. Who wants to make movies like Shrek 4? Cars 2 might have been a flop, in my opinion, but Pixar still has an excellent animation track record and you can’t blame women for wanting that excellence to be more accessible to them.
And only a dipstick would miss all of the strong female characters in Pixar films.
Except they aren’t leads, and there are far fewer of them than male characters. Seriously, every Rat in Ratatouille was a guy, every single one. That doesn’t even make sense.
Pixar presents a Peter Jackson film.
What about that said Peter Jackson?
I know you’re in 8th Grade so I’m not gonna hate kid, but seriously, but down your video games and go outside. It’s Summer.
No strong female heroine’s, huh? As opposed to a strong male heroine?
But addressing the point you tried to make, Helen Parr/Elastigirl was a pretty damn strong “female heroine” by all rights. I’m guessing you must have skipped “The Incredibles,” huh Nikki?
BRAVE is the first Pixar film to have a lead heroine. The lead character of The Incredibles was not Helen Parr/Elastigirl.
This will finally bring Pixar up to speed with Dreamworks Animation and Disney Animation in terms of centering the story around a female lead instead of a male.
But the focus of “The Incredibles”, as awesome as that movie was and I loved it so much I’m dying for a sequel which ordinarily I hate– ahem– was Bob Parr, not Helen Parr/Elastigirl. In this film, the main focus is the female character, a 1st for Pixar, thus the omission of Helen as an example.
I guess you must have missed the part where Nikki said, “has never had a strong female heroine ON HER OWN,” huh?
Helen/Elastigirl, while awesome, was part of a team and didn’t carry the movie and it wasn’t even her story being told. I’m looking forward to seeing Pixar attempt a solo story for a heroine, finally.
And Boo scared Mike and Sully…
Thought I was watching a trailer for HOW TO TAME YOUR DRAGON 2.
With CARS 2 and now this – looks like Pixar HAS run out of idea’s
Dude, an animated movie with a female action star, cool!
So… yah, why did that trailer seem like cheese-whiz style early-2000 video-game cut-scene? seriously, i swear they stole this from a Warcraft game. The DH caption was more inspiring. still hopin.
A bloody awful Scottish accent. As bad as Tom Cruise’s Irish accent in Far & Away.
*sigh* That’s the voice of actor Kevin McKidd… And yes, he is Scottish.
Sounds like Scotland-born Kevin McKidd doing a fairly dramatic reading of the lines to me….
Kevin McKidd is Scottish…
Yes, Kevin McKidd, a Scottish actor, did a terrible job with his Scottish accent.
You know that’s Kevin McKidd speaking in his real accent, right?
The voiceover was done by Kevin McKidd, who is from Scotland. So yeah, that seems like a pretty solid analysis.
It was voiced by a Scottish actor, putz.
This movie is going to be AMAZING! It looks like an oil painting…
Ah movie Scotland. Land of Irish pipes and Stonehenge
Well, close.. Stonehenge is in England.
after the fiasco disaster and embarrassment of cars2 i will never see a pixar movie again. they don’t know what they’re doing. they should stop now!!! it’s just gonna get worse.
So they make 11 straight tremendous films, you don’t like the 12th one, and now you’ll NEVER watch another Pixar movie again because they don’t know what they’re doing? Overreact much?
Toons,
You are so right to condemn everything Pixar has done over the past 25 years based on watching Cars 2. You sound like a real people person. My God Pixar films don’t deserve to be witnessed by you or anyone ever again. Incredibles, Up, Wall-E, Toy Story 1-3, no matter – Cars 2 just negates everything doesn’t it? Toons.
Don’t bother to have relationships with people outside your own blood. Toons It won’t work out.
Paul
why would you even see it? the first was bad enough.
Mulan II.
Braveharlot? Tough to judge a film by a :66 traler, but thought the heroine was a bonnie lass.
“Ya gonna love it. It’s got like everything. It’s like ‘Annie Hall’ meets ’300.’ It’s girls, it’s bow and arrows, it’s Europe, it’s everything!”
“Does the girl cut off one of her breasts to better shoot her bow and arrow?”
“What the hell are you talking about?! No, hell no, of course she doesn’t cut off her breast. Where do you get that insanity?”
Their first bomb?
Remember Disney / Pixar movies aren’t going after the artsy fartsy Hollywood community or the artsy fartsy critics they are going after the kids. Cars2 proves that, who the hell cares what adults and critics care about a Disney Pixar movie. As long as the kids love it, and it makes money, and sells products. Cars2 is a huge success, why? because it sells products to kids!
If you want character depth go see a Miramax or Fox Searchlight movie not a Disney Pixar or Marvel movie, there for KIDS.
No, I think that honor goes to Cars 2
Very cool; I like it.
Nice visuals, but a bland vibe. I think the closer they get to realism the less magical it feels.
I’m rooting for the bear.
Looks boring.
Wow, I would have loved to have read the Deadline Cynicism when the WALL-E trailer was released!
In some ways immitation is the most sincere form of flattery.
In other case’s it’s just a blatant rip of the first episode of my animated film.
Hey Disney; you’re the bear, I’m the girl.
Good luck with that…
I keep seeing Mike Myer’s Scottish character in my mind when I hear this voice.
Let’s hope not. The first httyd cartoon was bad enough. DW animation never had ad good idea…Jeffery katzemburg can’t even SELL them off.
