Why did you portray Carlos Pena as a sullen Latino when he’s among the most intelligent, thoughtful men to ever play the game? Stop be lazy with your writing. It’s more than just dialogue. You’re a Jew, yet people keep taking issue with how you portray other races, and women. Cut the crap — you’re too talented to be assassinating the character of human beings.

I may be in the minority who loathed Capote. I was really hoping Soderbergh stayed on this project because frankly, the film appears to be a movie that portrays Beane and his underlings the same way his own critics around baseball see them as: nerds. The Jonah Hill casting (was Paul DePodesta until DePodesta said no to his name in the movie as he was a Harvard guy who actually did play baseball and looks closer to Paul Rudd) made me fear this was happening.
I also find it pretty shocking that for a good looking guy with very Hollywood looks that the real Billy Beane actually does not appear to have a Hollywood doppelganger. Brad Pitt looks nothing like him but honestly I cannot really picture anybody who could play Beane based on looks alone.
Would you prefer a lesser actor like Billy Cambell just because he looks more like him?
It’s actually not my a qualm I have with the film. Like I said, the nerdy, pay no attention to what is happening on the field characterization bothers me the most. I just found it interesting to point out.
Soderbergh’s script was going to be part-documentary and part-theatrical. Nice dice but I do not understand how studios would expect nothing less from Steven Soderbergh. This looks by the books a sentimental, ‘based on a true story’ Hollywood sports film with extra cheese.
47 Million dollar budget for this, eh?
We’ll see. But I hope it’s good because I’ve been waiting patiently for Bennett Miller to direct a film since Capote.

For me, the most memorable film of 2010 was Sorkin’s Facebook film… this looks just as good.
Clearly, the people who made the first five comments work, in some capacity, for this film. it looks like a joke. terrible. a movie about payroll budgets in sports and how some dude worked the system a little differently so a team could end up winning their division– not even the World Series? Barf.
This thread is filled with Sony Pictures pubs and agent assists for the talent. Why else do all of the similarly-themed comments come in around the same time?
This looks slightly more boring than MEET JOE BLACK. I can see why this was a difficult greenlight – where is the audience for this? Plus Brad Pitt has lost his face. He’s heading for Redford territory.

The book is an awesome read for anyone who is a true fan of baseball, which has become as much about the business as the game on the field. The trailer looks like a crisp and sharp interpretation of the book I loved.
Any fan of baseball knows that even though Beane’s A’s haven’t won a World Series under his tenure, his inclusion of sabremetrics in the evaluation of talent has been groundbreaking for the sport. Every single team in baseball uses the theories that Beane brought to the mainstream. In fact, the Red Sox have won 2 World Series under Theo Epstein, who is very much from the same sabremetrics schooling that Beane is.

It also should be noted that Sandy Alderson’s teams in the late 80s to early 90s won and he was arguably the godfather of the movement. No Alderson, no Billy Beane.
The 2004 and 2007 Red Sox balanced big money stars with a lot of undiscovered talent like David Ortiz (who was a nobody until 2003), Bill Mueller, and Bronson Arroyo who would definitely be deemed Moneyball players.
I disagree, I think Brad’s face looks amazing– better a little weathered. Like he has some character.
Book was great, Fabio line is lame ( and who IS fabio anyway?) are those old men in that scene real people? Because they’re terrible actors.

The person responsible for cutting this trailer deserves a gold star. Movie looks solid all around. What a welcome reprieve from the comic book/ 3D insanity that has gripped Hollywood in its fevered pitch.

Despite being a big Pitt fan, gotta admit he looks a tad flat, which is probably a HORRIBLE sign for his performance in the movie considering this is a trailer LOL. Jonah Hill as a comedy sidekick? Really?
Based on the trailer, on the obvious mimicry of the FNL style — and the even more obvious complete lack of writing to back that up — I’ve gotta say this won’t appeal to many. Brad just can’t carry a character-based film.
And he’s looking kinda rough around the edges.
Peter Berg (Who produces the FNL show and directed the FNL film) would have been an excellent choice for this adaptation.
Very good trailer. Love sports movies. However, anyone that knows anything about baseball knows the Oakland Athletics have a long and rich history filled with great success (three World Series titles in the ’70s, three World Series trips in the late ’80s/early ’90s with one win, and a total of nine World Series titles for the franchise). If you want enduring misery in baseball, look no further than the Chicago Cubs.
Making Oakland seem like the Washington Generals for dramatic purposes and then hanging their hat on this being a “true story” feels a tad disingenuous. Yes, it did happen, but Oakland merely sustained a few down seasons before returning to success under Beane (until the Yankees bounced them from the playoffs two years in a row).
Definitely. At the time of the book the A’s had one of the best pitching staffs in baseball and a team of homegrown players (some who did take PEDs like many in their era) who were were also regarded as some of the best in baseball. Keeping those players as long as they could meant finding ways to make the most out of the limited payroll the A’s had. Enter Scott Hatteberg (played by Chris Pratt) and Chad Bradford (I forget if he ever ended up being in this movie or like Hatteberg himself left with Soderbergh left) who came out of nowhere and made Moneyball (both featured prominently in the book). It’s economics. Probably would make for a boring sports movie.
The A’s issues are mostly money. They are in the shadow of the San Francisco Giants (they even are stuck in a deal where it is impossible for them to get a new stadium without encroaching in ‘Giants territory’). Media, stadium, facilities, and ownership all were inferior but I am assuming the filmmakers and script had to compromise those realities. I mean, how else would Lew Wolff let them film in his ballpark if the film rightfully portrayed him as a cheap skate?
I should correct myself too: Steve Schott and Ken Hofmann were the A’s owners around the time of the Moneyball book.
I know. Even in the early 90s the A’s were in the playoffs. Yeah, there was a time after that when they were pretty pathetic to mediocre.
The sad thing about Beane’s teams in that moneyball era was that they blew some 2-0 series leads in lost the next three. I think that happened twice, out of their 4 in a row playoff appearances, I think they went 5 games in all the series. They had some 100 plus win seasons. I’m just going by memory.
That could be the problem with the movie, since they never got out of the first round of the playoffs, four times in a row.
