Idris Elba has closed his deal to play the lead role of Sensi in the Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros sci-fi action film Pacific Rim. Guillermo del Toro is directing as his next film and production gets underway in November. The film’s produced by Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni. Elba joins Son of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam, with Elba playing the role originally developed for Tom Cruise. While Elba has been knocking on the door of big things in Hollywood for some time, I think that his work in the British series Luther really helped show his considerable range. I’d watched the first season of that series in one sitting right as I was reading Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained script, and couldn’t help but have Elba in my mind as the lead character. He was one of the top names mentioned, but that went south when Tarantino went through a long and fruitless dance with Will Smith. I am persuaded that the role will likely go to Jamie Foxx, but Tarantino hasn’t finalized anything. Elba, who starred this summer in Thor, is currently shooting Prometheus for director Ridley Scott and 20th Century Fox. Elba is repped by UTA, The Schiff Co and UK agent Roger Charteris.

Now this will be a fabulous movie with Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam! Whew!
He’ll always be Stringer Bell to me… Fantastic actor.
Here here. The wire died after they killed him off.
if you like him in Luther, check out a little show called “The Wire”. He showed some range over 30 episodes! No doubt ask Donnette.
Del Toro has great taste in actors. Glad to see Legendary is backing picks that are the best for the movie instead of the poster.
Tarantino must hire Elba. He’s terrific1
I agree. Elba has much more presence than Jamie Foxx who other than “Ray” hasn’t really shown anything else noteworthy.
I’m not the biggest Foxx fan, but I have to disagree. The guy has great range, and can move from comedy to drama to action with ease. And you’re forgetting Collateral, which IMO was as good a performance from him as Ray for what it was. I think he’d mesh incredibly with Tarantino as well. Elba would be epic in that movie too, I hope he can at least get a supporting role next to Foxx in that.
I haven’t read the script, but any production that Elba’s in gets my attention.
hi i agree anything with idris elba in it has to be really good ive liked all his films and tv appearances great actor!!!
When the Broccoli kids get over their Jason Bourne fixation and finally dump that Vladimir Putin lookalike Danny Craig— Idris Elba should be the next to utter, “Bond, James Bond.”.
Very funny. Love Daniel Craig, but you are right, he does bear a striking resemblance to Putin.
I don’t agree. I met him in person and he’s the most dissimilar person from Putin that I ever saw!!!
Now Idris as Bond…………… That’s got to be a Fabulous Idea….
+1 for that.
+2 for that!
That…would…be…AWESOME! *swoon*
Couldn’t agree more. He is, and has always been, perfect for that role. Much better pick than Will Smith in this instance.
Fantastic news! It’s been a long time since a black performer became a movie star and if anyone, Idris Elba deserves it.
Come a long way from Ultraviolet
I’m so glad someone else remembers him from that show. I thought I was the only one. He was so good. He’s always been good.
Love Idris. Phenomenal actor and the charisma of a star. Also prefer him over Foxx, who for me, hasn’t lived up to some of his earlier performances (in particular — Any Given Sunday, Collateral).
Just goes to show you: great things happen for your career once you leave Paradigm!
Loved him in Luther…………..
He killed it in Thor. Awesome actor, followed him ever since the Wire. He also had a great arc on that Showtime series The Big C.
This is awesome. I just started watching LUTHER and Idris and Ruth Wilson are fantastic in it. I’ll watch anything Idris acts in from now on.
Are you sure he is the lead. I thought on of the Charlie’s was the lead.
Also a special shoutout to his stint on the Office. The only time that show was really watchable, interesting, real, or had any depth, in any of those later seasons.
I don’t see Jamie Fox in Django Unchained, I feel like his performance would end up being a hybrid of his character in “The Soloist” with his accent from “Ray” and his attitude from “Law Abiding Citzen”. I will agree that Fox has range, but that range has yet to be seen in a character as dynamic as Django who goes through a complete metamorphosis, which is why Elba is the only actor that should even be considered for the role. Hopefully Tarantino will make the right decision.
Luther is absolutely brilliant! I just saw S2-E1& it was superbly creepy & well-acted.
Tom Cruise should hang it up – let’s have lead actors who don’t need camera angles & shoe lifts to look tall to be commanding leading men!
Loves me some Idris. So glad that Luther is returning for a second season.
I haven’t read the script – but both actors are good and intense. And not overplayed. Good casting.
For one horrifying minute,I thought you were referring to that putrid Milla Jovovich vehicle from a few years ago. Then I exhaled with relief when I realized I was wrong.
Idris as Django please
STRRAAANNGGG!!!!
(I’ll never forget the first time I heard Stringer Bell’s accent…)
Absolutely love Idris Elba. I’m glad Hollywood is finally starting to realize this guy’s talent and actually utilizing it rather than sticking him in largely unforgettable films like Takers and Losers. Now if Chiwitel Ejiofor or Anthony Mackie could get the same breaks it would be even better.
Chewie and Anthony will get theirs… They are both immensely talented. They just don’t happen to be as pretty or as statuesque as Elba.
LOL I’m sure the studio geniuses who decided to take a cheap shot at ELba by replacing him with Tyler Perry (Elba criticized Perry’s studio pandering and “coonery” and Perry’s studio pals decided to make a statement by recasting Elba with Perry) are really patting themselves on the back now!
Elba’s movie is all but a sure thing, meanwhile Perry’s Alex Cross is doomed to failure before it even shoots.
Who says there’s no God?
Yo, String! WHERE WALLLACE AT?! WHERE WALLACE AT, STRING!?
they can’t afford tom cruise!
