Discovery Communications seems to be preparing the Street for bad news about The HUB — the kids channel it co-owns with Hasbro. In a $500 million debt filing at the SEC this morning, Discovery says that last month the companies amended their partnership agreement to create an undescribed “trigger event” that could lead to a writedown indicating the property is worth less than they had thought. The filing adds that “The HUB’s management is in the process of conducting a fair value analysis to support goodwill impairment testing,” with the results expected in 3Q. The companies also agreed to an unspecified change in the license fees that The HUB pays for its cartoons. The channel, which targets ages 6-12, has struggled to grow since October when Discovery and Hasbro re-branded Discovery Kids. It has attracted an average total day audience of 23,000 so far in the second quarter, down from 24,000 in the first quarter.
A Discovery spokesperson says that the “goodwill review is simply a pro-forma accounting exercise and (the company) feels very positve and encouraged by The Hub’s early days’ performance and ability to grow its audience in the future.”
Discovery says it will support general corporate expenditures with the $500 million it hopes to raise from a sale of senior unsecured notes due in 2021. Moody’s Investors Service says the company probably will use most of the cash to buy back its stock. Discovery has already repurchased 11.6 million shares of its common stock from the $1 billion currently authorized for that purpose. That includes the $147 million it spent between April 1 and June 10 to buy 3.9 million shares. Moody’s gave the new debt filing a Baa2 rating, which means it’s considered a moderate credit risk. A new round of stock repurchases could provide a bump for Discovery’s shares. They’ve appreciated about 5% over the last 12 months, under-performing the Standard & Poor’s 500, which was up about 17%.

My little one loves Discovery Kids.
My son loves the Hub. We switched satellite providers recently, and the HUB was one of the channels I made sure was on our new plan.
We don’t get the Hub on Dish on the fact they offer it on their most expensive package, so I’m pretty much forced to download episodes of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and I think most of us are doing the same for this fact. Though I’m not sure what The Hub’s availability is on other TV providers, but I believe this may be a factor; it’s either not affordable to someone with their TV provider in their area, or, it could be possible that it’s not available at all, which is more likely with cable than satellite.
Actualy the stock has been a great performer since 2009. It has gained over 90% since July 2009 where it was trading at 25. Outpaced the the market by 35% and is trading at 18 times earnings. For the new HUB network, friday night programing has done well with family game shows creating a strong L & M with Hasbro Products. HUB has innovative new animated series in development. The brand is growing everyday. There may be some adjustments and sell-offs, (profit taking) but this is a solid comany poised for conintued growth.
Thanks for the clarification. Do you work in the PR department for Discovery, Hasbro, or the HUB?
Maybe it was a great performing stock since 2009. Not a great performer in the last 12 months as the article states.
Whatever’s going on with management, they put on good quality shows. My kids watch it, record it, On Demand it…
23K average viewers! Wow, that’s really something to be proud of!
Did you know they actually pull episodes of the classic shows they air (Family Ties,Wonder Years,Happy Days,Lavern and Shirley,Doogie Houser MD, Adam west’s BATMAN) if the content is objectionable to “Kids and Their Families”? (Whatever that means – that’s the response given from viewer services to inquiries.
They pulled 4 episodes (2 2-parters) of BATMAN because they feature stereotypic Native Americans characters as Bad Guys? For goodness sakes, it’s a “camp” show from the 1960′s that has played in syndication since 1968 – I think kids know the difference between real and fantasy!
But yet, they have NO problem showing shows based on TOYS by Hasbro!
Did you read the article? The Hub is based on Hasbro’s toyline!!
As for dumping episodes w/ stereotypes, congratulations to the Hub for showing some decency and not teaching another generation to believe in racist stereotypes!
It’s ridiculous to believe that CHILDREN know what a stereotypical depiction is and how wrong it is!
The Hub is right where it needs to be. They just need to exercise patience. Brand recognition takes time for kids’ driven stuff.
The Hub plays Family Ties, The Wonder Years, and Doogie Howser. Intellectual pre-teen classics that should be enjoyed for generations! Kudos to them!
Patience in s the key here for HUB…give it some time to gel and develop with an audience..they need to worry more about that awful OWN Network after sinking all that money into that failed venture.
The Hub is a pretty good channel for people for people who love old shows like Family Ties , Happy Days , Doogie Howser , Batman and more , And cartoons like Transformers G1 GI Joe and JEM , If you hate the channel so much then don’t watch it little one.
So stop being such a damn troll Jed
Please, please keep The Hub. I’m in my mid 40′s and absolutely love The Hub. It shows the old TV show I love like Family Ties, Happy Day, Leavren and Shirley and more. I would absolutely miss The Hub trebley if it were to go.
The HUB is gonna be JUST FINE. They have awesome new programs – and the care and attention to quality in is evident. People will discover it. Just give it time.
All this is that bad for a nine-month-old digital-only channel?
discovery should relize that it takes time to build a brand channel like a the hub. for even Disney did not wind up a sucess over night espically its xd thing. they need to be patient no doubt even though so far the thing has cartoons for hasbro brands it still has some old clasics like happy days. it takes time to build even a thing like the hub
Loving The Hub especially with the addition of Jem to the line-up. My only problem is Directv doesn’t have an HD feed for it
Love Jem too. But what’s the use of an HD feed when none of those old 80′s cartoons are ever going to be in HD?
Just recently discovered The Hub and now I’m hooked! It will definitely be my new go-to network! I don’t have kids but I love the programming from the 80s that I grew up on. It doesn’t get old. I was actually surprised when I posted on Facebook how many of my friends or their kids watch that network. Please save The Hub!
I’m thinking My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fanbase will save The Hub in the blink of an eye as soon as it gets in trouble – seriously, it’s infecting the entire internet. If this channel gets shuts down prematurely, I’m pretty confident the fanbase will throw a riot. A big one.
With families pulling the plug on cable and satellite TV, this is going to be difficult for ALL cable networks to make money. I for one LOVE the Hub! I was a bit skeptical of the new channel but I gave it a chance and can’t stop watching it. The animated shows that are on during the day are great and has values it teaches kids just like back when I was young. The shows at night are great too, kind of reminds me of Nick at Nite when I was a kid. The Hub has something great going for them right now, PLEASE DON’T TURN IN TO DISNEY CHANNEL, CN, OR NICK, FOR DEAR GOD!
I’m with what Turtleey said: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic will save this channel, if nothing else. The Internet and its Bronies won’t let this channel (or show) go away, so I say that The Hub is no longer doomed.
