James Spader is working on a deal to return to NBC’s The Office this season — but he might have loftier ambitions than Michael Scott’s desk. According to Entertainment Weekly, Spader is in talks to return as Robert California, who appeared last season interviewing for Scott’s office-manager job (thanks to Steve Carell’s pending departure from the series). But the twist is that Robert might actually be in the running for Dunder Mifflin CEO, currently played by Kathy Bates, whose Harry’s Law was renewed for next season. More on all of this from our pals at TVLine.

Oh man. I will actually watch this show again if they get Spader for this. Wow. Loved every second of his interactions with the guys in the interview. Loved it.
Damn Steff has gotten fat in the face. Nice double chin!
Looks like he’s wearing Sherman Klump makeup. Hercules! Hercules!
Robert California seems to know who he really is. We should all look up to this character and his hard truth.
Mr. Spader did a brilliant cameo in that episode. The subtlety detail and bravado was something to be studied for all actors. He might be the perfect fit to revive the series.
He was so wonderful in the interview. They would be foolish not to find a way to bring him back.
So extremely excited! I hope he will be a series regular rather than recurring, but him returning to The Office in any capacity is amazing news.
Oh man, Spader was awesome. What a great idea. I loved Bates too – but that role is a great opportunity for a revolving recurring actor.
Spader was terrific in the Office episode, and it also was a thoroughly unique character — I’d watch a spin-off built around him. Kudos to the Office writers for giving him such a cool, funny, absurd role to play. Thrilled they’re bringing him back.
YES! He was my favorite of all the candidates.
Agreed. Best and funniest cameo by far. Would be an inspired choice.
Meh. Hasn’t the show already thoroughly explored weird male characters? I’m still hoping for Catherine Tate.
Way to go Steff! He was staggering in his cameo. Completely engrossing.
James Spader would be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT as the next Office boss.
Catherine Tate? Not so much. Really weak. Loss of edgy excitement. The series goes down in flames after next season.
Make it James Spader, and NBC has a hit for at least a few more seasons.
I frankly hated his Robert California character. I love Cathy Bates as the CEO and I think if they bring that guy back this show may just jump the shark. So far it’s done a good job at not jumping thanks to Dwight mostly but I think that it’s gonna be tough to find someone to replace Steve Carell. The only hope they have left is to use one of them either Jim or Pam as the boss and have the rest of the office make it imposible for them to run it correctly. I think Pam would make a great boss (at least for a little bit) and it’d be great to see how Dwight, Jim, Angela and the rest deal with it. Dont’ you think?
NOOOOOOO!! I want him to take Chris Meloni’s place on SVU!!!!
Spader was great in his cameo b/c it was just that, a cameo. If that character became a regular he would either become annoying and one note or just entirely unbelievable. The writer’s need to write a boss like Michael Scott circa seasons 2 and 3 – a good-hearted guy who just happened to be a bad boss. Not someone unrealistic like the Michael Scott of the last 2 seasons or ridiculously eccentric like every other boss they tried last year. Make the show real again.
Spader was the best part of that (2 part) episode. Pretty much a no-brainer to bring him back, his schedule permitting, of course.
Love Spader – Hell of an actor, but Christ… in this picture he looks like hammered shit.
Spader’s great, but from that photo, it seems he’s spent a little too much time working with Shatner… and following his lead at the craft service table.
Spader was the only interesting thing on The Office in years. Great call!
Huge thumb’s up on Spader. The guy commands the screen like few others. But to come in on the tail end of a fading series rather than re-enter with a show built around his unique talents seems like an odd approach to me. The Office would benefit, but Spader deserves better.
Spader’s character was completely unique and delivered the only laugh out loud moments in the episode. He’d be an inspired choice to replace M. Scott, as he’s the polar opposite – over qualified, ambitious and the smartest guy in the room. Tons of material could be mined from his having to deal with the underachievers he’d be saddled with! I too would watch a spin off show revolving around that character (and I hate spin offs). Amazing achievement by Spader, considering he had @ 5 minutes of screen time.
