EXCLUSIVE: There has been much speculation over whether Jennifer Lopez will return for another season as judge on American Idol. Adding to the intrigue: she is in talks to star in not one, but two feature films. I’m told that Lopez is in discussions to play the female lead opposite Jason Statham in Parker, the Taylor Hackford-directed action film adaptation of the Donald Westlake mystery novel series. Deadline revealed yesterday that the picture was acquired for U.S. distribution by FilmDistrict CEO Peter Schlessel. Statham will play Parker, a thief who follows a strict moral code, but a hard guy who’s willing to kill if crossed. That character was previously played by Mel Gibson in Payback and Lee Marvin in Point Blank. The hope is to hatch an action franchise. John J. McLaughlin wrote the script and Steve Chasman is producing with Kimmel, Hackford, Les Alexander and Jonathan Mitchell. Lopez plays the female lead, a character named Leslie, who gets involved with Parker as he executes a heist.
The film is being financed by Incentive Filmed Entertainment and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, and Sierra/Affinity’s Nick Meyer brokered that distribution deal and sold most worldwide territories at last month’s Cannes Film Festival. Production on the film begins in August.
At the same time, Lopez is also circling What To Expect When You’re Expecting, the Kirk Jones-directed Lionsgate film based on the bestselling how-to guide to preparing for childbirth. Cameron Diaz and Matthew Morrison star. Lopez is in discussions for the supporting role of Holly in that film. Neither deal is closed, but talks are underway. Clearly, Lopez is in demand again and that stint on American Idol certainly helped. Lopez last starred in The Back-Up Plan. UTA reps Lopez.

Great for Jennifer! And great for the movie.
If John J. McLaughlin can for her what he did for Natalie Portman in Black Swan, maybe Jennifer Lopez will find her way to the Oscar podium this year. (Yeah, I know — entirely different genre with an entirely different director. But anyone who read every draft Black Swan knows, John knows how to adapt material, make it his own, and write strong and dramatic parts for women.)
You heard it here first, people. This is going to be Jennifer’s best role since OUT OF SIGHT!
Jennifer would be crazy not to come back to Idol. She could easily do movies at the same time – Idol is a very minor time commitment. Plus, as a mother of young kids, Idol allows her plenty of time with her kids while still making great bank. We will see just how selfish she is.
you had me at statham and you lost me at j.lo
What ever Jennifer Lopez take on she really work it to her ability she give all of her. She bring the FUNK!
But she won’t. She won’t act anymore. She phones it in from some trailer. Out of Sight was a small miracle and she’s never delivered onscreen beyond that. She shouldn’t be picking the material she does or listening to her “people” who have no clue as to what is a good script or a bad script or a good director might be. She’s too busy selling her face to be on windshield wiper fluid or baking soda. She wants to create a business empire not be an actress.
As for Idol she should be paid what Steven Tyler is paid. She’s paid a lot less for doing the exact same job. When that inequity is corrected I’m sure she’ll return.
Despite what Walmart and Fox believe women deserve equal pay for equal work.
how does this “actress” keep getting work?
thats what I can never figure out. shes awful. Parker sounded good until her name was mentioned. Thats a big fail
God, seriously? Just when I was getting excited about Parker, the producers whip this load of crap across the plate and expect us to bat? No thanks. This is a replay of casting Lucy Liu in the last failed attempt at Parker.
Y’know…for me the frenzied manner with which Lopez chooses to market herself has so diluted her “brand” that I’m no longer interested in her talent. She can act and I have enjoyed many of her films. Today, however, it’s impossible to turn around without seeing her shilling this or that and making weekly (daily?) appearances. I know our tabloid culture supports and encourages this type of Kardashian behavior. I guess I just have a weak stomach.
Sorry, J-Lo. When I hear ‘Parker’ and ‘thief’ I think ‘Beth Riesgraf’ and ‘Leverage’. Mmmmmm, Leverage. I can hardly wait for Season 4 to start up.
Hopefully it’s a Karen Sisco type of role for her.
You people are, in a word, crazy!
Her first movie role she’s taking after the attention she garnered with American Idol is in PARKER — and no one takes it as a sign she’s returning to the gritty and grounded type of movie where she can show off the chops that made her an instant star in OUT OF SIGHT, and you’re complaining?
Yeah, she’s made some bad choices (from Bennifer to Kevin Smith to a string of nonroms)… but America loves second chances! If John Travolta and Bruce Willis can keep rising from the dead, why shouldn’t JLo have the opportunity?
Again, look at Black Swan: Winona wasn’t on screen for all of ten minutes and it was the best role she’s had in twenty years.
Let’s trust in John and Taylor and Jason and Jennifer: she’s going to be awesome in this part.
(And while they’re filming it, why don’t all you haters take the time you are spewing on the Internet to go plant a tree or read to children or volunteer at a nursing home.)
Amen! The combo of Hackford, Statham and Jennifer is different enough to keep me interested. It elevates it from the standard Jason Statham flick and I am happy to see him paired with a legit female lead. Fingers crossed J-Lo can capture that Out of Sight magic.
Although JLo is always at least good, I hate her rom coms. My god, it’s like she goes out of her way to get into sappy, flat material. She is best in gritty drama or action. With the right material and director, she shines.
Wrong choice, read the script she is not right.
My favorite hard boiled crime novels by my favorite crime writer Richard Stark/Donald Westlake about to get shit on by the usual clueless treatment by the soulless Hollywood system. I feel sick. Everyone should read the Parker novels (far superior to Elmore Leonard and Out Of Sight is a grossly overrated film) and protest this impending travesty. Jason Statham? Lee Marvin was perfection. I don’t see anyone on the movie landscape who can play this character effectively.
@you suck,
Then why bother if nobody can play the character?
That’s crazy. Somebody can. I don’t know if it’s Jason Statham but certainly somebody is capable.

Everyone always forgets the other movie based on a Parker novel, The Outfit (1973), starring Robert Duvall.
there’s also The Split with Jim Brown, based on the novel The Seventh (it’s really good), and Slayground with Peter Coyote.
Give this woman a break! Sure she play the fame game a bit to much, and is overdoing it with the endorsements. But i think she can act when in good hands, Selena was good as well, she just needs to commit! And Idol gave her a second chance, i hope she takes it, and stops phoning it in!
will miss her on Amer Id but she should do movies. Even if part is no good she’e always a pleasure to look at!!
I love JLo! she can act, dance, and sing. nobody is that talented besides her! to all the people who are hating on her..seriously???
i really doubt you could do her job and raise 2 babies. just because you think your ‘all that’ you shouldn’t bring other people down espesially her.in a million years you couldn’t do what she’s doing so grow up. SHE ROCKS! stop being negative and try some positive comments once in a while(:
