EMMYS: Matt Weiner Lobbies For Jon Hamm
UPDATE: We hear Jon Hamm’s blockbuster new three-year deal is in the eight figures, catapulting him in the top ranks of cable’s leading men. His previous contract for Mad Men was for two more seasons. The new renegotiated deal raises his pay significantly in exchange for adding an extra year to his contract. Its length now aligns it with the one of Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner, who closed a new three-year deal with Lionsgate TV and AMC earlier this year. After locking in Weiner, Hamm was the studio’s top priority, with other key cast members also expected to get bumps in exchange for longer contracts.
PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE: Great news for fans of one of the best hours of drama on television. We’ve learned that Jon Hamm just inked a three-year Mad Men contract with Lionsgate TV and network AMC in a deal that makes the show’s star one of the highest-paid actors in a cable series. Mad Men returns to AMC in 2012. Hamm is long represented by ICM and his manager is Connie Tavel. Hamm’s signing comes on the heels of Mad Men creator Matt Weiner closing a new $30 million deal for the show following one of the longest and most difficult showrunner re-negotiations in recent TV history. AMC officially renewed Mad Men for two more seasons and Lionsgate TV already locked in Mad Men creator Matt Weiner for three more years. So this Hamm negotiation effectively assures that Mad Men will go to seven seasons.

This show has to be a loss leader for both Lionsgate & AMC. Or international sales is through the roof!
DVD sales are good and Mad Men is far from being the most expensive cable show.
What is it with everyone saying ‘loss leader’ as if they are in the business..haha. This has not been operating at a loss for a long time now based on the futures expected from this show. There is more to what a show makes on it’s tv showing and even residuals are accouted for when they look at the total worth of any show and this one will be around for a long time. I hate the fact that shows now end in 7 years. Why??? We have had law and order on for 20 years tying with Gunsmoke. Many show went 10 years in the past. They aren’t creative enough to create stories that can go on and on like Seinfeld or Friends or Frasier which all ended before they needed to.
Great news. It will be amazing if the show can go on until they reach 1970.
Very good news. Also smart for Hamm to keep his foundation as he continues to expand his career.
I hope Don Draper finds out who he really is. He seems to be one person at work, another person with the ladies, yet another person with his family, and a very, very different person when he’s alone.
Like Tony.
He deserves every penny.
Hamm is class act, he deserves the best this business can offer.
Yes, bring it. I started with season one about a month ago. Am now on season four. Trying to spread it out as I await season five! These are fine actors, and a great story… Hats off to all involved.
Good stuff. At last a real, classic leading man after this whole raft of frat boy assholes and non-threatening metrosexuals. Get that dough, Hamm, I’m rooting for you. And I’m with Aki, it would be great to see the show go into ’70. Now all Hamm has to do is stay out of those horrible rom-coms and quit tarnishing his brand with the 30 Rock/comedy shit. Good-looking people don’t have to be funny.
“30 Rock/Comedy shit?” The guy happens to be very funny. His turn in Bridesmaids illustrates his diverse dramatic range. What you write makes little sense.
What diverse range did he show in Bridesmaids? He was playing a modern day Don Draper.
I have to hand it to him, he keeps to himself in the public eye, has no drama in life,
to bad charlie missed that cue
the tail cannot wag the dog
Ummm….Hamm is amazing at comedy! Being diverse is not a liability. His episodes of SNL and 30 Rock are usually the strongest of the seasons
I’ve met and been around the guy professionally, and he’s a class act, a gentleman, and deserves every penny of this. The bonus is that we now get to enjoy several more years of this wonderful program. Definitely a win / win!!!!
I wonder how his fellow cast members feel about him being paid triple what they get, especially since there were rumors that some were getting cut due to budget issues.
Well, they can’t all be Jon Hamm. They’re all great, but more or less replaceable. It’s a bummer everyone can’t be paid equally, but that’s the way the world works.
WEll, I hope they are smart enough to realize that without Jon there would be no Mad Men. He has the charisma and style to make the show and the others add to that, but still need him.
Exactly, Jon Hamm IS Mad Men. No question about it.
They do 13 episodes a year right? If Weiner gets 30m or almost a million an episode and Hamm get say 10m or 330k an episode that’s a big number to deal with before you shoot a foot of film. I don’t care how many dvd’s they sell and what they bring in foreign this has to be a huge loss leader for AMC and a single for Lionsgate financially , maybe a double because AMC is paying the freight.
Whatever I’m glad they are getting rich and I’m one of the million avid viewers the series has. Love it.
This guy is a star and there would be no AMC without Mad Men. They need to pay up. Hope he wins the Emmy. It mystifies me that he hasn’t already.
There would be no Mad Men if Jon wasn’t on it.
“Eight Figures” over 39 episodes has him making BROADCAST network money! Wonder if it includes back-end money?
This is, of course, great news. I’m looking forward to see what happens with Don Draper’s kids on the show in the turbulent 60′s. By the time this show comes back, they should be a suitable age and not young children any more. I only hope I live LONG enough to see Mad Men come back on TV. It’s taking a ridiculously long time between seasons. It seems last season aired years ago.
I know that this is the internet and anonymity emboldens the insecure and unhappy among us, but it’s refreshing (so far, anyway) to, for once, read comments after a piece on a public figure and not wade through cheap shots and put downs.
I also applaud Hamm’s success. It’s nice when a ‘class act’ gets noticed for being same.
Absolutely excited for him. Had the chance to meet Jon and January and they’re both incredibly nice. Can’t wait for MadMen to come back!
And I agree, Hamm is f’n hilarious.
Too long between seasons, I’m over it.
They could have gotten rid of Weiner and definitely Don’s daughter. Those many plotlines involving Sally (who cares!!!!) were reason enough to show that Weiner is inept or trying to get the wrong target audience. The money spent on rehiring Weiner could have been spent on more clothes and paying the team better. Also fire the chubby tv guy and the guy they rehired back, they’re a drag.
Hurray!! I was sooo glad and happy to see that Mad Men will be back on. Jon is “Fabulous” He actually makes the show-and it is the fact that he is so different in the situations he is in//Great Show!
Subjectively, there is no Mad Men without Jon Hamm so he deserves to have financial success. He plays Don Draper so enigmatically that I am at times simultaneously charmed and disgusted by his shenanigans in the boardroom and bedroom. Don’s character arc in season 4 is so so satisfying on many emotional levels; it’s my favorite season thus far. Having signed up for Netflix instant streaming to watch it on repeat will help until season 5. I can’t wait to see Don strut his stuff down the hallways of his office. Squeee.
We came late to the party but have thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent catching up… I feel like I am watching home movies as I mirror the Draper daughter in age… and remember every pop culture detail and then some… often see my mom’s clothing, dad’s suits, business friends and familiar cocktails, home accessories, etc…. and then my dad was an executive… had a few playboy bunny keys… what a fabulous show and Jon Hamm is just wonderful to watch – both cerebral and eye candy… nothing beats that in our book… My husband didn’t get to meet my dad so this helps him understand so much of what he was like… so happy to know there’ll be more good things to look forward to… An oasis in a garbage dump of mental and visual ennui. Thank You Jon and all at MadMen!
