Mea culpa, I took today off rather than suffer more of Universal’s humiliating slings and arrows inevitably directed at me. Because, thanks to matinee and pre-sale tickets, the studio’s Bridesmaids passed Knocked Up around noon as Judd Apatow’s biggest grossing film, not adjusted for inflation or higher ticket prices. Cume is over $148.769M and counting. Needless to say, Judd himself used the occasion to bitchslap me over my pre-release belief that the R-rated comedy featuring women burping and farting for our female amusement wouldn’t have an opening domestic weekend bigger than $13M, even $15M tops, before it actually debuted with $26.2M: “I am so delighted to confirm that I was right and you were wrong,” Apatow emailed me for posting here. “From now on when you say something which hurts me, I will remember to read your early Bridesmaid‘s opinions and predictions and that will soothe me.” Ouch!
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Taste it Finke,
TASTE IT!
Whatever happened to making your money without the bitchslapping and hornblowing? Judd Apatow was right and will make a bunch of money in the process. That should be enough without stooping to emailed tomfoolery. Apparently, he is just as immature and boorish as the people in his movies. Not very appealing. Success is revenge enough for someone with character and dignity. Oh, I forgot. We’re talking about Hollywood. My SUPERBAD!
Dude…get over it. It’s obviously all good-natured and Nikki seems to be taking it in stride. Some people have a sense of humor.
Agreed. Calm down DonHo.
Tiny bubbles…
nikki has made a brilliant career of bitchslapping and hornblowing.
“Whatever happened to making your money without the bitchslapping and hornblowing?”
Probably the same thing that happened to journalism without bitchslapping and hornblowing. Like it or not, bitchslapping and hornblowing is kind of the norm on Deadline.
Please.
Nikki’s opinions on Bridesmaids is archaic and ridiculous. This is exactly what women fought for. They didn’t fight for all movies to be elegant.
It’s an absurd notion.
Bridesmaids is by far one of the best movies of ’11.
Apatow is right.
It’s the Citizen Kane of fart joke movies.
If loving that movie is right
… I would rather be wrong.
People are not entitled to an opinion anymore? Nikki you are still right. The movie was funny but certainly not a classic comedy. In fact none of Apatow’s movie hold up. Same with Sandler. Both are lame comedians that usually steal there ideas from other sources and declare they have something similar in development. Sad but true.
Apatow sucks.
Nikki rules!
Sounds like this guy has eaten too much all ready and still has some of the bitter …
I’m glad you were wrong about Bridesmaids. It’s an awesome flick. Absolutely hilarious.
Don’t sweat it– you’re on top of everything else so incredibly!
Then again doesn’t the success of Bridesmaids show that Paul Feig is the talented one? Apatow on his own is about as funny as your average fratboy
Anyway I’m glad to see Bridesmaids is a hit cause it means Feig will get more directing gigs
Here, here! Apatow is a nasty bitter man (and why, we wonder) and Feig is a sweetheart whose intentions have ALWAYS been in the right place!
Exactly, Feig did a terrific job with an amazing script by Wiig and Mumolo.
I think it shows that Kristen Wiig, Annie Mumolo, AND Paul Feig, (and Apatow) are the talented oneS. (Not to mention the rest of the cast). We all know movies are a team effort, why the insistence on acting as though the either the producer or the director was the “talented one”? If anything, the two women who originally pulled it out of thin air, (more like their own hearts/minds/experience), were clearly equally, if not more responsible, for its ultimate success.
Wiig and Mumolo did not write the final draft of the script that was filmed. The script they handed in was almost 90% rewritten by Apatow and his boys. Helps to get your facts straight.
Yeah, I guess the two women whose names are actually ON IT couldn’t possibly have done what Apatow and his “boys” did. Silly me for believing the hype. Did one of his boys also star in it in drag?
sorry to burst your chauvenistic bubble but wiig and mumolo wrote every word of the script. apatow gave notes, which these two ladies incorporated. this is fact. so take a pill and try to admit to yourself that two women wrote the highest performing apatow movie EVER. see ya suckas.
First…have a great holiday Nikki and the DH team.
Second…this is the essence of DH…having opinions and fun.
Third…Slumdog Millionaire was put on the shelf by the pros.
Fourth…Congrats, Judd, for the success of Bridemaids…and, having fun with Nikki.
Happy 4th of July to all.
Sometimes I don’t know if this blog is about the film industry, or about you Nikki Finke. Get over yourself.
i don’t get the hate for that movie… it’s a summer comedy… wtbfd?
well deserved. All you mention is the burping and farting, which make up only one scene. It actually is a very well-written, very funny movie, with a great cast and a good message. I can’t recall the last time I laughed this hard in a movie.
He’s probably bitter because he took a lot of heat on here for Funny People. The commentary & comments were just brutal when that movie opened and underperformed. Judd, if you’re reading this, please don’t screw the pooch with your next directorial effort. You seem like a good guy, but that won’t stop anyone on here from dancing on your grave. Jesus himself would get barbecued if he directed a movie that fell short of the tracking estimates.
Well, that’s the problem: you refer to women “burping and farting for our female amusement”. You got the female numbers correct, but forgot to multiply by two to account for the male amusement as well.
Sorry Finke! Still love ya B Hartstein.
Strange how views differ. In the UK not only is ‘Bridesmaids’ a smash, but has received some of the best reviews of the year.
In the US it is a smash and has received some of the best reviews of the year.
And in return you can remind him how lousy Funny People was.
Ha-ha. You were asking for it Nikki. Never make those kinds of promises. I never do. They will remember this to you for a long time.
You never know with those predictions. I was actually awaiting Bridesmaids to do this well. Trailers were funny. But on the other hand I thought that Your Highness would do very well too. Because trailers were hilarious too. But then it flopped.
You both are such a fucking loser
Even Nikki has to be reminded every now and then that her words do hit hard sometimes. This is a great site, but you have to remember that their are real people that you are commenting on.
I, too, thought your early critique was off-base. Never underestimate the power of six incredibly funny ladies. Kristen Wiig, Sookie and Maya Rudolph, in particular, are comedy gold.
I imagine you could always just throw the title “Funny People” back in his face any time you wanted.
Well you did refer to Kristin Wiig as “appalling” back when the trailer came out. I can see why Apatow would be peeved about that.
The guy sounds like an immature douche. You put a movie out there on the public eye, you’d better be prepared that people will have all sorts of opinions on the film itself, and how well it will do. Taking it personally is both childish and immature.
Well, it looks like Nikki can not only dish it out, she can take it.
Take that! Bridesmaids easily one of the best comedies in a long time.
Why would you stake your reputation on a movie you had nothing to do with? Why do you care so much?
Apatow is pretty delicate. If you read his Twitter posts, the real take-away is a need for validation.
Not to rub your nose in it… But did you even see Bridesmaids? It is easily one of the best films of the year!!! Sure there are a couple of sophomoric gags but the reason it’s making a mint is because it shows women as real flesh and blood characters(flaws and all ) rather than shitty Hollywood archetypes.
Not far beneath it’s belch and farts bests a huge beating heart. Easily one of the best films of the year.
By the way, this post makes me love you more! Everyone eats humble pie but few do it with such poise. You are a class act!
I especially loved all the awful drama in the third act. So funny! The people around me seemed to forget it was a comedy in the third act, but I remembered, and laughed all through the “heart” that was on display. One of the worst films I have ever seen in a theater.
