It’s been pretty much a done deal that Katie Couric is headed to ABC to start her own syndicated talk show, but an official announcement can’t be made before the matching window expires at her former employer CBS. Well, that window expires this weekend, and CBS pulled its offer in early May. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that an announcement from ABC could be made as early as Monday. While a foregone conclusion, word is that the ABC is not completely done yet but is in final stages. When it’s all set and done, it is expected to include the talk show, which would give Couric the ownership and potential financial windfall she had been seeking, as well as a role for her at ABC News, including possibly pieces on primetime newsmagazine 20/20. As expected, ABC would launch the Katie Couric talk show in fall 2012, airing it in the afternoon. The network is expected to give back an hour to its owned and affiliate stations so they can easily accommodate the new program. The only surviving ABC soap opera, General Hospital, which now airs at 3 PM, may be moved to an earlier time slot to make room for the talk show. The odds are that new unscripted series The Chew and The Revolution, which are set to take over the 1 PM and 2 PM slots in the fall and in January, won’t both succeed, which could lead to another afternoon vacancy for fall 2012. The 4 PM slot on ABC’s O&O stations that traditionally carried The Oprah Winfrey Show has already been spoken for for this fall, with the stations airing a mix of local news programs and acquired syndicated shows, but there could be an opportunity there too if the immediate Oprah replacements don’t get traction this coming season.
The deal with ABC would mark the end of lengthy negotiations for Couric and her team that included a lot of twists and turns. The process started off with multiple suitors and NBC and CBS as the frontrunners, but both networks eventually pulled out, leaving late entrant ABC as the only interested party. The pact would also mark the first new gig for former NBC Universal CEO (and one-time Today executive producer) Jeff Zucker who is executive producing the show.

That’s going to be a done deal at ABC as CBS wants nothing to do with her anymore.
If Katie Couric bumps GH, I will not watch her show!!!!!
I will NOT watch anything on ABC anymore. BOYCOTT!!!
Money greedy people…on both sides
I’m so glad I have Direct Tv with crappy choices like The Chew, The Revolution and Couric’s show ABC’s daytime lineup is sliding downhill fast. Too bad the satilite company won’t let me pick only the channels I want cause ABC wouldn’t make my list.
I am so sick and tired of Katie. She was god awful on CBS that I stopped watching…..so is so one sided and liberal. UGH, they better not touch GH!! ABC is ridiculous to take a big chance on her. If they do choose to put “her” on , I hope it fails big time.. HA
We do not need another talk show! We do not like her at all. General Hospital shouldn’t have to move time slot!!!! Why can’t that Katie thing have 1pm and let General Hospital keep there time! I think 04/01/63 trumps Katies never
Why does ABC think we want her! We do not like her at all!! General Hospital rules
Does anyone with a brain want anything to do with Katie Couric? Why are the idiots at ABC wasting money on her? She is the reason I stopped watching 60 Minutes, a show I’d watched my whole life, and CBS Evening News.
Ditto: Who is going to watch her. She is so bias and extremely liberal. I hate to even watch her
Katie,Katie,Katie. Go home and be with your family and spend the millions you have made. We are tired of you……
She won’t do any better at ABC. The general public doesn’t like Katie in a solo, lead anchor position. Hollywood and the news media is in love with Katie, but the AUDIENCE is not, and a new network isn’t the solution.
This is a dumb question but do the ABC stations really need another talk show? I suppose they do with the cancellations of the soaps? Curious to see if they decide to use their syndication arm thereby allowing to sell to other stations (windfall for Couric) or straight network. I can’t see that much cash coming from the network for a show but to land Couric perhaps they’ll come up with the cash somehow. Getting a little crowded on those ABC stations in the morning with talk shows.
Why is this syndicated why can’t they put it on the network?
Katie seeked a syndication deal and got it. Although she thinks she’ll be the next Oprah smart money would say, hell no.
Mighty words coming from someone who doesn’t know how to use “sought” as opposed to “seeked” in a sentence. If you want to sound like an expert then you should use the correct words.
“Seeked?”
Remains to be seen if they syndicate or network. More $ for talent in syndication typically, but again, if they wanted network, and wanted Couric they’d come up with the cash somewhere in their budgets. It’ll be interesting to see if they syndicate or network her show. The Oprah slot in most of the country has already been spoken for – some of you have brought up, that’s pretty much not an option at this point on most ABC stations, they have the soap slots and that’s it.
I guess this means that after Oprah, ABC is remains committed to carrying even more vacuous talk shows. They really would be better off keeping One Life To Live on the air. Sometime in a small room somewhere down the road, they are going to look at these gabfests and realize that they should never have cancelled the soaps.
Soaps don’t make the money, and Disney is in business to make money. Also what costs more to produce a talk show or a soap?
Soaps do make money on other networks where they are respected and handled properly. If they would have sold it in foreign markets like CBS, negotiated contracts that allowed for selling compilation dvds (for example all of Erica Kane’s weddings or the various personalities of Jessica and Vicki Buchanan) or even shooting on location in various Disney theme parks to promote other members of the family. All Mr. Frons did was a lame crossover with the weakest DWTS link Wendy Williams (forgive me if that isn’t how she spells her name). It wasn’t nearly enough for a show with over 40 years of history and a genre that at one time kept last place network ABC from dissolving into bankruptcy.
No, they won’t, because the soaps are getting sub 2.0 ratings right now, and they’re only going down. Soaps are far too expensive to be getting such low ratings, and there’s no way that the networks can afford to do scripted programming in the daytime anymore. Hell, they can’t even do scripted programming for all of their primetime schedules anymore. They are competing with more channels for fewer eyeballs.
CBS cancelled two of its soaps in the past two years, and is getting approximately equivalent ratings with much cheaper programming. They don’t regret the cancellations, and I guarantee you that ABC won’t either. Only in the delusional minds of the moronic soap fans are the networks making a mistake by cancelling the soaps.
Now, go back and eat your bonbons, lick your foodstamps, and count the days until your next gummint welfare check arrives.
This soap fan is neither moronic nor unemployed. It is okay if you are not a fan of the genre. And if you want to ignore the vast history of daytime dramas and their relationships to their networks that is your perogative. But name calling is a bit childish for someone with a superiority complex the size of yours, is it not?
My grandmother enjoys watching her soap operas and after working for more than 40 years of her life she deserves it. I don’t know were you get off calling people that watch soap operas delusional and moronic welfare bums but you need to get over yourself and quit insulting people you know nothing about.
What a bunch of haters. I love Katie and wish her all the best! I seriously doubt she’s worried about what negative folks think or say. Home girl got paid!
Haven’t watched her since she left that haven for commie lobs NBC. Have not missed her one bit either.
curious? Why do you like her? She, in my opinion is the most annoying, least credible, hard to watch(besides Oprah)anchor…ever….EVER! She sucked down the ratings on CBS, and I hope she does the same for these liberal idiots at ABC!
Nobody hates her. She is just uninteresting, shallow, and overpaid. That’s why people are perplexed about ABC picking her up.
Sarah Palin has the same qualities and I’m perplexed, too.
So well put!
And your an one of here 4 fans.
you’re a true dope.
interesting comments from you — “homegirl got paid” and “don’t be a hater”???!!! the best thing about facts is that they don’t lie,….unless, of course, you can’t handle the truth. her numbers stink, plain and simple. if you were paying for her (out of your pocket) you wouldn’t give her the time of day. the money that, as you say, ‘homegirl’ is gonna get paid is going to come from advertising dollars and extorting the affiliate stations into placing her show on the tube. they will do all they can do to see that she succeeds. too bad that ABC doesn’t recognize that they are buying an ‘old dog with a bunch of fleas’. besides, ABC’s numbers are even worse than CBS’s. like i’ve always said, “it’s easy to be a BIG SPENDER with other people’s money.” example: obama.
Good for you, now is it ok if we don’t care to hear from Katie? Katie helped FoxNews gain more viewers. In that regard she is no different from CNN, MSNBC, ABC, or NBC. All of them push people to FoxNews and I don’t think they have what it takes to turn any of those propaganda outlets around.
Not haters, merely critics. Ms. Couric didn’t hesitate criticizing others. Turn about is fair play. That you are her big fan doesn’t change the fact that she didn’t generate the numbers her network hoped for and thus time to try a change. Her performance didn’t justify her pay. Turning in the numbers is the only thing that justifies folks in her pay scale. Doubtful she does her job for the money anymore, except as a way to keep score..so money isn’t the point for her. It is for whomever offers future employment. Only in TV and investment banking can management risk such money on a risky gamble.
Stick your ghetto “haters” term where it belongs. People resent Katie Couric because she has little talent, and most reasonable people know her show will fail but the little clique in the media don’t care what the public wants. The game is rigged for people like Katie Couric.
So, Ted, tell me, if when you dislike someone or something, that automatically turns YOU into a ‘hater’? Or are only those who don’t care for what you care for ‘haters’? Seems pretty arrogant to dismiss the rest of us for our honest opinions. Go ahead and love on Katie all you want, but you have no right to expect us to feel the same. (I suppose you ‘love’ Rush Limbaugh….or are you secretly a ‘hater’, too…?!)
Does Katie actually have a fan base to hold up her own show? I would think her fans would have held up her news show but guess what they didn’t. That’s why she got caned. ABC is making a huge mistake. No one is going to watch this. Or should I say not enough people are going to watch any of these new shows they are rolling out. Let’s see, we will have The Chew, The Revolution ( or what ever it’s called), Katie, then Dr. Oz. Sounds like a serious snooze fest. When all this starts I will NOT be watching. I give these shows 2 years tops. Then they will be rolling out replacements & so on & so on.
ABC you are a bunch of fools & are making a serious mistake.
I’m surprised that Barbara Walters isn’t trying to pull her onto The View
If Katie takes over the General Hospital time slot…folks won’t be happy.
That goes for “Judge Katie”..”Game Show Hostess Katie”..”Reality show Katie. Wonder when Maria Shriver is going to sign on…If ABC leaves 1 soap standing…I’m guessing it will be “One Life To Live”..
“Homegirl may have got paid”, but these “celebrity” news types are such ego maniacs, that the failure trumps payday.
Katie needs to join hands with Barbara Walters, and walk gently into the sunset of life together!
No one likes little Katie Couric. And for this we lose another soap????? It’s cheaper than the soap and that is why it’s done.
she will rank right up there with that guy that’s married to connie chung…maybe they will hang out together…same level of audience intelligence…..
So, Perky Katie moves on to destroy another Lame Stream Media giant. No one liked her on CBS, no one will like her on ABC. Next stop Al Gore’s media debacle where Katie will move closer to oblivion along with Keith Olberman.
Like Kieth Olberman or not he is way smarted then Katie. You don’t have to be right winged to know that Katie is annoying and is not enjoyable to watch.
A career of irrelevancy has been prolonged. Perhaps good for shopping mall grand openings, but hard news? Was Dan Rather not available? I truly pity you if the perky one is your source of information.
Oh no. Not another platform for Katie to — not so subtly — let us know how we should and shouldn’t be thinking. Frankly, we’ve all had enough of her condescending and veiled preaching to us little people. Sorry Katie, we’ll do just fine without your “help”.
Heck yes! I say give her 7 to 9 am, 11:30 to 1 pm, and then the longest evening news on TV….from 5 to 11 pm. Let her polish ABC’s news division the way she polishes her chipmunk cheeks. Add a few special segments, and a magazine in her name. Go Catie Go! I hope they pay you a billion!
Hundreds of people were let go at CBS News, while Ms. Smirky Perky kept her 15 million a year salary. No face is worth that much. She never re-negotiated even though her ratings stunk. What makes ABC think anyone wants to watch her? How many people will be let go during her tenure there. The networks deserve their low numbers, and more will be heading toward the gates when she comes on.
They took off the soaps only to give Katie Couric her own show? Seriously???
Just one more reason I will never again watch ABC.
STFU Ted Williams; just because someone has an opinion they immediately become haters because you say so? Fluk You buddy…all you want to do is hang a label on people with whom you do not agree but as soon as they do the same they are haters…STFU! this country is sick of your schlit!
This is why the people on TV news are out of touch with the rest of the country. Only in TV land can you fail miserably and then land a new multimillion dollar contract. In the real world, she’d be off TV and starting over as a Mary Kay sales rep and busting her butt to try to make a living.
TV, the opiate of the masses.
Katie Couric is s sad excuse for a journalist. In case you haven’t noticed, Americans are over main stream media & All of Hollywoods low IQ actors. Your entertaining each other not us.
Katie might appeal to the hollywood crowd but her appeal is limited in the midwest and southern belt. CBS and now ABC are carelessly spending money on a has been….at the same time firing news staff that works 10 x’s harder. Reward one ego while you fire 100 people that made the organization what it is.
If they put Katie in General Hospital’s spot, she’ll be up against Ellen in many markets. Do they really think ANYONE who’s watching Ellen is going to switch to Katie? And it’s a sure thing the fans of a canceled General Hospital aren’t going to watch. Tons of money down the drain for a program nobody will watch.
Having watched GH for years, I’ve found most of my evening viewing is also ABC since I see so many ads for their shows. Guess that’s going to change, too.
Huge mistake ABC.
